Places to Develop Democracy: Relevance of Relph's Concept of Place for the History of Education

    Get PDF
Presentación conferenciaThis paper, based on the research developed in the Erasmus+ project Reimagining Creative Democracy (2018-1-SE01-KA203-039115), provides a synthesis of Relph’s concept of place giving examples of its use in the study of past and present educational spaces. The reappraisal of Relph’s concept might help address new perspectives from which spaces and places of education may be seen differently. Spaces are relevant to the History of Education and Relph’s essay is important for us because it represents the phenomenological approach to the study of place and space from at least two perspectives: 1. The distinction between place and space; 2. The delimitation, when writing about educational spaces, of the emotional attachment to or detachment from a specific learning place (inside or outside the school buildings).Universidad de Málaga. Numerical analysis of embedded walls for design with Eurocode 7

Anglès: The possibility of applying numerical methods, particularly Finite Element Models (FEM), for geotechnical design permits to cope with more complexity and therefore model reality with better accuracy and precision. Elaborated models are relatively inexpensive, increasingly less time-consuming and can be aided by commercial software. The introduction of Eurocodes has changed the standard lumped factored practise to geotechnical design in the direction of limit state analysis and partial factoring. As a result, the implementation of numerical models is more complicated, raising issues on how to apply partial factors of safety, particularly in the strength parameters. Finite Element Methods are considered a valid tool for design in Eurocode 7. However, guidelines are provided typically on limit equilibrium models. The application of partial factors of safety is regulated by the design approaches in Eurocode 7. When using FEM, the application of partial safety factors in the soil strength parameters can be considered by means of two methods: · Numerical simulation with characteristic values without factoring as an input. Then in a required Ultimate Limit State check stage the software undertakes a stepped reduction of strength parameters until geotechnical failure occurs and the factor of safety is determined. · Factored strength parameters are the input of the analysis. No failure occurring in any stage implies satisfying the requirements from the code. Eurocode 7 gives no guidance on which of these two approaches is more appropriate; neither on the appropriate algorithm to perform the required strength reduction during the analysis in the first approach mentioned. As long as the results may differ between the procedures for the same input, developing guidelines is considered necessary. The objective of this project is to apply the above methods to the case of a retaining wall and assess the suitability of the approaches for predicting the ultimate limit state. Special attention is to be put on bringing to light the effect of the dilation angle

The study of life-history traits is central to evolutionary biology and ecology, as life-history traits are closely linked to the environment where organisms thrive. Among them, traits related to reproduction such as the threshold size for reproduction, fecundity and the schedule of reproductive investment along life are particularly relevant. Their study helps to understand past adaptive processes as well as to infer future ones. For forest trees, this knowledge is particularly valuable and urgent, given their founding role in ecosystems all over the world. Life-history traits can be addressed at the species level but usually, intraspecific within- and among-population variation also exists. This is the case for numerous plant species, as flowering time is commonly very variable and found to be correlated with natural selective pressures. This correlation may be due to plastic or genetic causes. A requirement for genetic responses to take place is the existence of additive genetic variation, which can be revealed by quantitative genetic studies or artificial selection experiments. Moreover, according to life-history theory, the expression of particular fitness-related traits is limited by costs or trade-offs with other traits also related to fitness. Pinus pinaster Ait. and P. halepensis Mill. are two Mediterranean pine species showing numerous advantages for the study of tree reproductive traits from an evolutionary-ecological standpoint. Using these species as a model, it is possible to integrate aspects such as population differentiation, past and future local adaptation, plasticity, genetic architecture and multi-trait adaptive relationships

Energy harvesting from vehicular traffic over speed bumps: A review

    Get PDF
Energy used by vehicles to slow down in areas of limited speed is wasted. A traffic energy-harvesting device (TEHD) is capable of harvesting vehicle energy when passing over a speed bump. This paper presents a classification of the different technologies used in the existing TEHDs. Moreover, an estimation of the energy that could be harvested with the different technologies and their cost has been elaborated. The energy recovered with these devices could be used for marking and lighting of roads in urban areas, making transportation infrastructures more sustainable and environmentally friendly

Homological Region Adjacency Tree for a 3D Binary Digital Image via HSF Model

    Get PDF
Given a 3D binary digital image I, we define and compute an edge-weighted tree, called Homological Region Tree (or Hom-Tree, for short). It coincides, as unweighted graph, with the classical Region Adjacency Tree of black 6-connected components (CCs) and white 26- connected components of I. In addition, we define the weight of an edge (R, S) as the number of tunnels that the CCs R and S “share”. The Hom-Tree structure is still an isotopic invariant of I. Thus, it provides information about how the different homology groups interact between them, while preserving the duality of black and white CCs. An experimentation with a set of synthetic images showing different shapes and different complexity of connected component nesting is performed for numerically validating the method.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad MTM2016-81030-
