    Integrability and complexity in quantum spin chains

    There is a widespread perception that dynamical evolution of integrable systems should be simpler in a quantifiable sense than the evolution of generic systems, though demonstrating this relation between integrability and reduced complexity in practice has remained elusive. We provide a connection of this sort by constructing a specific matrix in terms of the eigenvectors of a given quantum Hamiltonian. The null eigenvalues of this matrix are in one-to-one correspondence with conserved quantities that have simple locality properties (a hallmark of integrability). The typical magnitude of the eigenvalues, on the other hand, controls an explicit bound on Nielsen's complexity of the quantum evolution operator, defined in terms of the same locality specifications. We demonstrate how this connection works in a few concrete examples of quantum spin chains that possess diverse arrays of highly structured conservation laws mandated by integrability.Comment: published version; the code and data to reproduce numerical results are available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.787646

    [Executive Summary]. How can the deadlock after the ‘no’ to the European Constitutional Treaty in France and the Netherlands be overcome? What should be the aim of the ‘period of reflection’ that has been agreed by the European Council? The authors of this paper propose the adoption of a ‘Citizens Compact’, which should directly address the larger malaise among citizens that underlies the Constitutional crisis. It should contribute to the reduction of the EU’s democratic deficit without treaty reform. The following measures should be envisaged: ‱ National parliaments should participate more strongly in the controversies on core European issues through earlier and intensive debates about EU initiatives. ‱ Every six months governments should explain their positions on the priorities of the EU-presidency in their national parliaments. ‱ EU-actors (MEPs, Commissioners and top officials) should participate more intensively in national debates about European issues and contribute to a better understanding of the European political processes among citizens. ‱ National governments should regularly publish information bulletins about the latest EU initiatives and –decisions. ‱ Public fora about European issues should be established in every member state with speakers coming from national politics, from the EU level and other member states as well as representatives from civil society. ‱ Uncontroversial elements of the Constitutional Treaty that strengthen EU democracy could already be adopted through inter-institutional agreements. ‱ A White Paper on the establishment of a ‘European Democratic and Civic Space’ in the EU should be elaborated. ‱ In the future important legislative acts should contain an impact assessment of the consequences on citizens’ lives

    Development of a Stable Respiratory Syncytial Virus Pre-Fusion Protein Powder Suitable for a Core-Shell Implant with a Delayed Release in Mice:A Proof of Concept Study

    Currently, there is an increasing interest to apply pre-fusion (pre-F) protein of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as antigen for the development of a subunit vaccine. A pre-F-containing powder would increase the flexibility regarding the route of administration. For instance, a pre-F-containing powder could be incorporated into a single-injection system releasing a primer, and after a lag time, a booster. The most challenging aspect, obtaining the booster after a lag time, may be achieved by incorporating the powder into a core encapsulated by a nonporous poly(dl-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) shell. We intended to develop a stable freeze-dried pre-F-containing powder. Furthermore, we investigated whether incorporation of this powder into the core-shell implant was feasible and whether this system would induce a delayed RSV virus-neutralizing antibody (VNA) response in mice. The developed pre-F-containing powder, consisting of pre-F in a matrix of inulin, HEPES, sodium chloride, and Tween 80, was stable during freeze-drying and storage for at least 28 days at 60 degrees C. Incorporation of this powder into the core-shell implant was feasible and the core-shell production process did not affect the stability of pre-F. An in vitro release study showed that pre-F was incompletely released from the core-shell implant after a lag time of 4 weeks. The incomplete release may be the result of pre-F instability within the core-shell implant during the lag time and requires further research. Mice subcutaneously immunized with a pre-F-containing core-shell implant showed a delayed RSV VNA response that corresponded with pre-F release from the core-shell implant after a lag time of approximately 4 weeks. Moreover, pre-F-containing core-shell implants were able to boost RSV VNA titers of primed mice after a lag time of 4 weeks.     Ovalbumin-containing core-shell implants suitable to obtain a delayed IgG1 antibody response in support of a biphasic pulsatile release profile in mice

    A single-injection vaccine formulation that provides for both a prime and a boost immunization would have various advantages over a multiple-injection regime. For such a vaccine formulation, it is essential that the booster dose is released after a certain, preferably adjustable, lag time. In this study we investigated whether a core-shell based implant, containing ovalbumin as core material and poly(DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid) of various monomer ratios as shell material can be used to obtain such a booster release. An in vitro release study showed that the lag time after which the ovalbumin was released from the core-shell implant increased with increasing lactic to glycolic acid ratio of the polymer and ranged from 3-6 weeks. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed minimal differences between native ovalbumin and ovalbumin from core-shell implants that were incubated until just before the observed in vitro release. In addition, mice immunized with a subcutaneous inserted core-shell implant containing ovalbumin showed an ovalbumin-specific IgG1 antibody response after a lag time of 4 or 6-8 weeks. Moreover, delayed release of ovalbumin caused higher IgG1 antibody titers than conventional subcutaneous vaccination with ovalbumin dissolved in PBS. Collectively, these findings could contribute to the further development of a single-injection vaccine, making multiple injections of the vaccine superfluous

    Coralline Algae in a Changing Mediterranean Sea: How Can We Predict Their Future, if We Do Not Know Their Present?

    In this review we assess the state of knowledge for the coralline algae of the Mediterranean Sea, a group of calcareous seaweeds imperfectly known and considered highly vulnerable to long-term climate change. Corallines have occurred in the Mediterranean area for ∌140 My and are well-represented in the subsequent fossil record; for some species currently common the fossil documentation dates back to the Oligocene, with a major role in the sedimentary record of some areas. Some Mediterranean corallines are key ecosystem engineers that produce or consolidate biogenic habitats (e.g., coralligenous concretions, Lithophyllum byssoides rims, rims of articulated corallines, maerl/rhodolith beds). Although bioconstructions built by corallines exist virtually in every sea, in the Mediterranean they reach a particularly high spatial and bathymetric extent (coralligenous concretions alone are estimated to exceed 2,700 km2 in surface). Overall, composition, dynamics and responses to human disturbances of coralline-dominated communities have been well-studied; except for a few species, however, the biology of Mediterranean corallines is poorly known. In terms of diversity, 60 species of corallines are currently reported from the Mediterranean. This number, however, is based on morphological assessments and recent studies incorporating molecular data suggest that the correct estimate is probably much higher. The responses of Mediterranean corallines to climate change have been the subject of several recent studies that documented their tolerance/sensitivity to elevated temperatures and pCO2. These investigations have focused on a few species and should be extended to a wider taxonomic set
