    Quantum isometries and group dual subgroups

    We study the discrete groups Λ\Lambda whose duals embed into a given compact quantum group, Λ^G\hat{\Lambda}\subset G. In the matrix case GUn+G\subset U_n^+ the embedding condition is equivalent to having a quotient map ΓUΛ\Gamma_U\to\Lambda, where F={ΓUUUn}F=\{\Gamma_U|U\in U_n\} is a certain family of groups associated to GG. We develop here a number of techniques for computing FF, partly inspired from Bichon's classification of group dual subgroups Λ^Sn+\hat{\Lambda}\subset S_n^+. These results are motivated by Goswami's notion of quantum isometry group, because a compact connected Riemannian manifold cannot have non-abelian group dual isometries.Comment: 18 page

    Functional outcome of arthroscopic Bankart repair in post-traumatic recurrent shoulder dislocation in a private tertiary care teaching hospital in eastern India

    Background: Recurrent anterior shoulder dislocations are quite common in young patients with Bankart lesions. The open Bankart repair was the gold standard for years, however arthroscopic Bankart repair has gained popularity. The aim of the study was to evaluate the functional results of arthroscopic Bankart repair in patients with post-traumatic recurrent anterior glenohumeral instability.Methods: Patients who underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair for post-traumatic recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation were included in the study. This was a prospective study conducted at a tertiary care Hospital in Kolkata, India between August 2017 to May 2019. All patients were followed up at an interval of 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, 9 months and 1 year. Rowe score was used to assess the functional outcomes of the patients.Results: 34 (91.9%) patients reported good to excellent results, whereas only 2 (5.4%) patients had fair outcome and 1 (2.7%) patient demonstrated poor surgical result. The total rowe score improved from 46.62 pre-operatively to 94.20 post-operatively after 1 year (p<0.01). By the end of 1-year follow-up, 35 (94.6%) patients had full range of motion in all the planes. Majority of (89.2%) patients did not have any complications. Only 1 patient out of 37 had a recurrence (2.7%).Conclusion: Arthroscopic Bankart repair is an effective, cosmetic and safe surgical procedure with good clinical outcomes and excellent post-operative shoulder range of motion. This surgical intervention also has low recurrence rate and minimum surgical complications

    Generalized Holographic Cosmology

    We consider general black hole solutions in five-dimensional spacetime in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We obtain a cosmological evolution via the gravity/gauge theory duality (holography) by defining appropriate boundary conditions on a four-dimensional boundary hypersurface. The standard counterterms are shown to renormalize the bare parameters of the system (the four-dimensional Newton's constant and cosmological constant). We discuss the thermodynamics of cosmological evolution and present various examples. The standard brane-world scenarios are shown to be special cases of our holographic construction.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Protein moonlighting in parasitic protists

    Reductive evolution during the adaptation to obligate parasitism and expansions of gene families encoding virulence factors are characteristics evident to greater or lesser degrees in all parasitic protists studied to date. Large evolutionary distances separate many parasitic protists from the yeast and animal models upon which classic views of eukaryotic biochemistry are often based. Thus a combination of evolutionary divergence, niche adaptation and reductive evolution means the biochemistry of parasitic protists is often very different from their hosts and to other eukaryotes generally, making parasites intriguing subjects for those interested in the phenomenon of moonlighting proteins. In common with other organisms, the contribution of protein moonlighting to parasite biology is only just emerging, and it is not without controversy. Here, an overview of recently identified moonlighting proteins in parasitic protists is provided, together with discussion of some of the controversies

    Systematic review of the safety and efficacy of foam sclerotherapy for venous disease of the lower limbs

    Background: Foam sclerotherapy is a potential treatment for lower limb venous disease. Methods: A systematic review, with no restriction on study design, to assess the safety and efficacy of foam sclerotherapy. Results: 69 studies were included. For serious adverse events including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, the median event rates were less than 1%. Median rate for visual disturbance was 1.4%. Median rates for some other adverse events were more common, including headache (4.2%), thrombophlebitis (4.7%), matting/skin staining/pigmentation (17.8%) and pain at the site of injection (25.6%). Median rate for complete occlusion of treated veins was 87.0% and for recurrence or development of new veins was 8.1%. Evidence from meta-analysis for complete occlusion suggests that foam sclerotherapy is associated with a lower rate compared with surgery (RR 0.86, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.10) and a higher rate compared with liquid sclerotherapy (RR 1.39, 95% CI 0.91 to 2.11). However, there was substantial heterogeneity across the studies in the meta-analysis. Conclusion: Serious adverse events were rare. There is insufficient evidence to reliably compare the effectiveness of foam sclerotherapy with other minimally invasive therapies or surgery.     Potentiating Effects of MPL on DSPC Bearing Cationic Liposomes Promote Recombinant GP63 Vaccine Efficacy: High Immunogenicity and Protection

    Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a vector-transmitted disease caused by Leishmania donovani, is potentially fatal if left untreated. Vaccination against VL has received limited attention compared with cutaneous leishmaniasis, although the need for an effective vaccine is pressing for the control of the disease. Earlier, we observed protective efficacy using leishmanial antigen (Ag) in the presence of either cationic liposomes or monophosphoryl lipid A-trehalose dicorynomycolate (MPL-TDM) against experimental VL through the intraperitoneal (i.p.) route of administration in the mouse model. However, this route of immunization is not adequate for human use. For this work, we developed vaccine formulations combining cationic liposomes with MPL-TDM using recombinant GP63 (rGP63) as protein Ag through the clinically relevant subcutaneous (s.c.) route. Two s.c. injections with rGP63 in association with cationic liposomes and MPL-TDM showed enhanced immune responses that further resulted in high protective levels against VL in the mouse model. This validates the combined use of MPL-TDM as an immunopotentiator and liposomes as a suitable vaccine delivery system

    Immune Amplification of Murine CD8+ Suppressor T Cells Induced via An Immune-Privileged Site: Quantifying Suppressor T Cells Functionally

    BACKGROUND: CD8(+) suppressor T cells exert antigen-specific suppression of the expression of hypersensitivity by activated T cells. Therefore, CD8(+) suppressor T cells serve a major regulatory role for the control of active immunity. Accordingly, the number and/or activity of CD8(+) suppressor T cells should be influenced by an immune response to the antigen. To test this hypothesis we used an adoptive transfer assay that measures the suppression of the expression of delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) by CD8(+) suppressor T cells to quantify the antigen-specific suppression of DTH by these suppressor T cells. METHODS: Suppressor T cells were induced in the spleens of mice by the injection of antigen into the anterior chamber of an eye. Following this injection, the mice were immunized by the same antigen injected into the anterior chamber. Spleen cells recovered from these mice (AC-SPL cells) were titrated in an adoptive transfer assay to determine the number of AC-SPL cells required to effect a 50% reduction of antigen-induced swelling (Sw50) in the footpad of immunized mice challenged by antigen. RESULTS: Suppression of the expression of DTH is proportional to the number of AC-SPL cells injected into the site challenged by antigen. The number of AC-SPL cells required for a 50% reduction in DTH-induced swelling is reduced by injecting a cell population enriched for CD8(+) AC-SPL cells. Immunizing the mice receiving intracameral antigen to the same antigen decreases the RSw50 of AC-SPL cells required to inhibit the expression of DTH. CONCLUSIONS: The results provide the first quantitative demonstration that the numbers of antigen-specific splenic CD8(+) suppressor T cells are specifically amplified by antigen during an immune response
