PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF LOW-COST PRECISION POSITIONING METHODS FOR FUTURE PORT APPLICATIONS

    Get PDF
In recent times, a lot of research has been conducted to improve the accuracy of various positioning systems. The motivation behind this trend is to ensure high quality GNSS services for various applications. In particular, emphasis has been placed on improving the level of accuracy of consumer grade GNSS receivers. Significant improvements in the quality of signal reception of these receivers would enable low-cost solutions for asset management in for example, harbor areas. Research in Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring - Fault Detection and Exclusion (RAIM-FDE) algorithms give users the ability to exclude satellites with degraded signals, hereby improving the performance of the GNSS solution. This research investigates and evaluates the performance of various customer grade GNSS positioning systems intended for port applications. Various high precision techniques such as Precise Point Positioning and Real-Time Kinematic were conducted and accuracy levels were noted on Multi-band receivers, Single frequency receivers, and GNSS-enabled smartphone. Our final conclusion suggests optimal low-cost GNSS solutions for asset monitoring and management

Information management and exponencial learning in Society 5.0: foundations for an integrated system

Humanity uses the information to reduce discomfort, effort, and errors. With this in mind, headphones were invented, so that the music could be heard without disturbing others; home appliances were created to reduce the effort in washing dishes or clothes, and calculating machines were developed so that human distraction would not cause an accident in calculating the weight that a bridge could support. But the information has hardly changed the certainties and doubts about which university course to take, what the individual's daily life will be like in the academic path, which includes when and what to study, what to eat and what to do in their free time. Is there a hobby that the individual could enjoy, but does not know? There is greater access to information, but many times instead of navigating this information, the individual sinks in the middle of it. In addition, teachers and students remain stuck in the curriculum, with the same menu being provided for carnivores, vegetarians, or lactose intolerants. If before, students were beaten with wood in their hands and were attacked psychologically, having to learn the same as everyone else, nowadays only hands are no longer suffering from wood, at least in theory. Reducing mistakes in choosing a higher education course and the whole life that governs the academic path, can be a dream for many individuals, and software that collects enough information to learn about the individual and guide him/her on the beginning of their academic path could be an extremely useful compass. Knowing which university course to take, which discipline, among the electives, to choose, knowing the right time to get up according to the circadian cycle, what to do throughout the day, what and when to eat, are all informational outputs that utopian software could provide so as to contribute to the individual's success. But would such informational management drastically reduce the hassles, efforts, and mistakes to be made, or would it negatively affect the individual's life due to lack of experience with failure? Is the information learned from failure really necessary for success? This article starts from a brief history about information in education, analyses information management in Society 5.0, in the era of exponential technologies, and the construction of competence matrices. The goal is to start a debate about the delegation and trust in software, the management of personal information for individual success.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Catastrophizing mediates the relationship between the personal belief in a just world and pain outcomes among chronic pain support group attendees

    Get PDF
Health-related research suggests the belief in a just world can act as a personal resource that protects against the adverse effects of pain and illness. However, currently, little is known about how this belief, particularly in relation to one’s own life, might influence pain. Consistent with the suggestions of previous research, the present study undertook a secondary data analysis to investigate pain catastrophizing as a mediator of the relationship between the personal just world belief and chronic pain outcomes in a sample of chronic pain support group attendees. Partially supporting the hypotheses, catastrophizing was negatively correlated with the personal just world belief and mediated the relationship between this belief and pain and disability, but not distress. Suggestions for future research and intervention development are made

Perfectionism and the Big Five: Conscientiousness predicts longitudinal increases in self-oriented perfectionism

    Get PDF
Findings from cross-sectional studies on the relationship between perfectionism and the Big Five personality traits demonstrate that conscientiousness shows significant positive correlations with self-oriented perfectionism, and neuroticism with socially prescribed perfectionism. The question is whether conscientiousness and neuroticism also predict longitudinal changes in self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism. A sample of 214 adolescents aged 14-19 years completed measures of the Big Five and perfectionism twice over a period of 5 to 8 months. As was expected, conscientiousness predicted longitudinal increases in self-oriented perfectionism. Neuroticism, however, did not predict any longitudinal increases in perfectionism—neither in self-oriented nor in socially prescribed perfectionism. Providing support for McCrae and Costa’s dynamic personality theory (McCrae & Costa, 1999) which holds that broad personality traits play a part in the development of lower-level personality characteristics, the findings suggest that conscientiousness is a trait that plays a role in the development of self-oriented perfectionism

Etude du comportement en tribocorrosion d’aciers inoxydables en milieux aqueux : Evaluation de la synergie entre sollicitations mécaniques superficielles et réactions électrochimiques de surface, effet de la microstructure

This study deals with the behaviour of a stainless steel (passive material) undergoing tribocorrosion. Focus has been put on the synergistic effect existing between mechanical action and medium electrochemistry, leading to significant wear. In a first step, a methodology has been set up, on a ferritic microstructure, to quantify this synergy as well as its two compounds that are the wear-accelerated electrochemistry (W.A.E.) electrochemistry-accelerated wear (E.A.W.). The former stands for the material dissolution following the mechanical action of the pin on the surface. The latter accounts for the modifications of the surface mechanical properties induced by electrochemistry. The parameters of the mechanical action being set, the evolution of the synergistic effect compounds has been studied as a function of the oxidizing feature of an acidic medium, modified by using a potentiostat. A minimum of wear, determined under cathodic polarisation is considered as the reference mechanical wear. In the passive domain, for higher passive potentials, E.A.W. decreases due to the thickening of the oxide part of the passive film, enhancing the mechanical properties of the surface. On the contrary, the W.A.E. increase is explained by more intense oxidising reactions occurring on the bare material revealed to the electrolyte by sliding. This leads to a maximum wear obtained at an intermediate passive potential. The evolution of the synergistic effect compounds has then been investigated under free potential condition with crossed influences of the medium acidity and the latency period. The more acidic the medium, the greater the W.A.E. because dissolution is enhanced. However, it decreases with a shorter latency period because of a weaker galvanic coupling between the partially repassivated wear track and the cathodic surface. The latency period decrease limits the passive film maturation. In acidic medium, E.A.W. does not decrease because the passive film, mainly composed of oxide, keeps its abrasive feature. To the opposite, in neutral medium, the hydroxide proportion being majority, E.A.W. decreases. In a second step, the microstructure influence on the tribocorrosion behaviour has been evidenced as a function of the previously studied parameters. After a thermal treatment, the stainless steel shows a ferrite-martensite microstructure. Considering global wear, the microstructure effect appears to be negligible on the tribocorrosion resistance in free potential situation, under the studied conditions. On the contrary, a two-phase microstructure is beneficial when sliding is performed under cathodic or passive potentials thanks to a mechanical transfer occurring from the martensite to the underlying ferrite. Moreover, the detrimental effect of the passive film on the surface mechanical properties is reduced when the microstructure involves an hard phase (E.A.W.).Ce travail porte sur l’étude du comportement d’un acier inoxydable (matériau passivable) en situation de tribocorrosion.

This article investigates the relationship between the personal belief in a just world (BJW) and domain-specific beliefs about justice and examines how justice cognitions impact on adolescents' development, particularly on their achievement at school and their subjective well-being. A longitudinal questionnaire study with German adolescents aged 14-19 years was conducted over a period of five to eight months. The pattern of results revealed that evaluations of the school climate and of the family climate as being just were two distinct phenomena, both of which impacted on the personal BJW, which in turn affected the domain-specific beliefs about justice. However, the domain-specific beliefs about justice did not impact on each other directly. Moreover, an evaluation of the family climate (but not of the school climate) as being just reduced depressive symptoms, whereas depressive symptoms did not weaken the evaluation of one's family as being just. The evaluation of the school climate as being just improved the grades received in the next school report, whereas the grades received did not affect the justice evaluation of the school climate. Finally, all relationships persisted when controlling for age and gender. In sum, the pattern of findings supports the notion that justice cognitions impact on development during adolescence
