The effect of pre-treatment parameters on the quality of glass-ceramic wasteforms for plutonium immobilisation, consolidated by hot isostatic pressing
Glass-ceramics with high glass fractions (70 wt%) were fabricated in stainless steel canisters by hot
isostatic pressing (HIP), at laboratory scale. High (600 C) and low (300 C) temperature pre-treatments
were investigated to reduce the canister evacuation time and to understand the effect on the phase
assemblage and microstructure of the hot isostatically pressed product. Characterisation of the HIPed
materials was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), coupled with energy dispersive Xray
analysis (EDX) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). This analysis showed the microstructure and
phase assemblage was independent of the variation in pre-treatment parameters. It was demonstrated
that a high temperature pre-treatment of batch reagents, prior to the HIP cycle, is beneficial when using
oxide precursors, in order to remove volatiles and achieve high quality dense materials. Sample
throughput can be increased significantly by utilising a high temperature ex-situ calcination prior to the
HIP cycle. Investigation of glass-ceramic wasteform processing utilising a glass frit precursor, produced a
phase assemblage and microstructure comparable to that obtained using oxide precursors. The use of a
glass frit precursor should allow optimised throughput of waste packages in a production facility,
avoiding the need for a calcination pre-treatment required to remove volatiles from oxide precursors
Assessing uncertainties in estimating surface energy fluxes from remote sensing over natural grasslands in Brazil
Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the main fluxes in the global water cycle. As the Brazilian Pampa biome carries a rich biodiversity, accurate information on the ET dynamics is essential to support its proper monitoring and establish conservation strategies. In this context, we assessed an operational methodology based on the Simplified Surface Energy Balance Index (S-SEBI) model to estimate energy fluxes over the natural grasslands of the Pampa between 2014 and 2019. The S-SEBI is an ET model that requires a minimum of meteorological inputs and has demonstrated reasonable accuracy worldwide. Therefore, we investigated the model performance considering radiation data from both ERA5 reanalysis and Eddy Covariance measurements from a flux tower. Furthermore, comparisons from satellite-based estimates with in situ measurements were performed with and without energy balance closure (EBC). Results indicated that the meteorological inputs have low sensitivity on daily ET estimates from the S-SEBI model. In contrast, the instantaneous energy balance components are more affected. The strong seasonality impacts the evaporative fraction, which is more evident in late summer and autumn and may compromise the performance of the model in the biome. The effects in the daily ET are lower when in situ data without EBC are considered as ground truth. However, they are less correlated with the remote sensing-based estimates. These insights are useful to monitor water and energy fluxes from local to regional scale and provide the opportunity to capture ET trends over the natural grasslands of the Pampa

Encontrados no Brasil desde os primórdios da colonização portuguesa, os presépios logo tiveram de adaptar-se à realidade local, circunstância muito propícia ao aparecimento de concepções heterodoxas e ao emprego de elementos exóticos da fauna e flora de cada região. Como registros envolvendo insetos são muito pouco comuns, chama a atenção que fêmeas de saúva, Atta sp. (Hymenoptera, Formicidae), tenham sido aproveitadas na composição de presépios no estado de São Paulo. Tendo subsistido pelo menos até a década 1960, os "presépios de formigas" existentes em cidades como Embu das Artes poderiam estar relacionados às "formigas vestidas" criadas por Jules Martin, curiosa manufatura paulistana do último quartel do século XIX.Present in Brazil since the beginning of Portuguese colonization, crèche nativity scenes were soon adapted to local reality, a propitious circumstance for the appearance of heterodox conceptions and the use of exotic elements of the fauna and flora peculiar to each region. Having subsisted at least up to the decade of 1960, the "ant crèches" of cities such as Embu das Artes could be related to the then famous "dressed ants" created by Jules Martin, a curious manufacture of the city of São Paulo in the last quarter of the 19th century
Global Search for New Physics with 2.0/fb at CDF
Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for
indications of new electroweak-scale physics. Rather than focusing on
particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with
the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers
gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross-section
physics. Further sensitivity to new physics is provided by two additional
algorithms: a Bump Hunter searches invariant mass distributions for "bumps"
that could indicate resonant production of new particles; and the Sleuth
procedure scans for data excesses at large summed transverse momentum. This
combined global search for new physics in 2.0/fb of ppbar collisions at
sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV reveals no indication of physics beyond the standard model.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Final version which appeared in Physical Review D

Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons
We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with
states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar
collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed
as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+,
\bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1})
= 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let
