Two-Sample Nonparametric Estimation of Intergenerational Income Mobility
We estimate intergenerational income mobility in the USA and Sweden. To measure the degree to which income status is transmitted from one generation to another we propose a nonparametric estimator, which is particularly relevant for cross-country comparisons. Our approach allows intergenerational mobility to vary across observable family characteristics. Furthermore, it ts situations when data on fathers and sons come from di fferent samples. Finally, our estimator is consistent in the presence of measurement error in fathers' long-run economic status. We fi nd that family background captured by fathers' education matters for intergenerational income persistence in the USA more than in Sweden suggesting that the character of inequality in the two countries is rather di fferent

Design and sensitivity of a 6-axis seismometer for gravitational wave observatories
We present the design, control system, and noise analysis of a 6-axis
seismometer comprising a mass suspended by a single fused silica fibre. We
utilise custom-made, compact Michelson interferometers for the readout of the
mass motion relative to the table and successfully overcome the sensitivity of
existing commercial seismometers by over an order of magnitude in the angular
degrees of freedom. We develop the sensor for gravitational-wave observatories,
such as LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA, to help them observe intermediate-mass black
holes, increase their duty cycle, and improve localisation of sources. Our
control system and its achieved sensitivity makes the sensor suitable for other
fundamental physics experiments, such as tests of semiclassical gravity,
searches for bosonic dark matter, and studies of the Casimir force
Coupling couples with copulas: analysis of assortative matching on risk attitude
We investigate patterns of assortative matching on risk attitude, using self‐reported (ordinal) data on risk attitudes for males and females within married couples, from the German Socio‐Economic Panel over the period 2004–2012. We apply a novel copula‐based bivariate panel ordinal model. Estimation is in two steps: first, a copula‐based Markov model is used to relate the marginal distribution of the response in different time periods, separately for males and females; second, another copula is used to couple the males' and females' conditional (on the past) distributions. We find positive dependence, both in the middle of the distribution, and in the joint tails, and we interpret this as positive assortative matching (PAM). Hence we reject standard assortative matching theories based on risk‐sharing assumptions, and favor models based on alternative assumptions such as the ability of agents to control income risk. We also find evidence of “assimilation”; that is, PAM appearing to increase with years of marriage. (JEL C33, C51, D81
Nonlocal field theory driven by a deformed product. Generalization of Kalb-Ramond duality
A modification of the standard product used in local field theory by means of
an associative deformed product is proposed. We present a class of deformed
products, one for every spin S=0,1/2,1, that induces a nonlocal theory,
displaying different form for different fields. This type of deformed product
is naturally supersymmetric and it has an intriguing duality.Comment: 23 pages, Late
Active platform stabilization with a 6D seismometer
We demonstrate the control scheme of an active platform with a six degree of freedom (6D) seismometer. The inertial sensor simultaneously
measures translational and tilt degrees of freedom of the platform and does not require any additional sensors for the stabilization. We show
that a feedforward cancelation scheme can efficiently decouple tilt-to-horizontal coupling of the seismometer in the digital control scheme.
We stabilize the platform in the frequency band from 250 mHz up to 10 Hz in the translational (X, Y) degrees of freedom and achieve a
suppression factor of 100 around 1 Hz. Further suppression of ground vibrations was limited by the non-linear response of the piezo actuators of the platform and by its limited range (5 lm). In this paper, we discuss the 6D seismometer, its control scheme, and the limitations of

Sensitivity to Gravitational Waves from Compact Binary Coalescences Achieved during LIGO's Fifth and Virgo's First Science Run
We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational
wave detectors for compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's
fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. We present noise spectral
density curves for each of the four detectors that operated during these
science runs which are representative of the typical performance achieved by
the detectors for CBC searches. These spectra are intended for release to the
public as a summary of detector performance for CBC searches during these

Search for gravitational waves associated with the InterPlanetary Network short gamma ray bursts
We outline the scientific motivation behind a search for gravitational waves
associated with short gamma ray bursts detected by the InterPlanetary Network
(IPN) during LIGO's fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. The IPN
localisation of short gamma ray bursts is limited to extended error boxes of
different shapes and sizes and a search on these error boxes poses a series of
challenges for data analysis. We will discuss these challenges and outline the

Swift follow-up observations of candidate gravitational-wave transient events
We present the first multi-wavelength follow-up observations of two candidate
gravitational-wave (GW) transient events recorded by LIGO and Virgo in their
2009-2010 science run. The events were selected with low latency by the network
of GW detectors and their candidate sky locations were observed by the Swift
observatory. Image transient detection was used to analyze the collected
electromagnetic data, which were found to be consistent with background.
Off-line analysis of the GW data alone has also established that the selected
GW events show no evidence of an astrophysical origin; one of them is
consistent with background and the other one was a test, part of a "blind
injection challenge". With this work we demonstrate the feasibility of rapid
follow-ups of GW transients and establish the sensitivity improvement joint
electromagnetic and GW observations could bring. This is a first step toward an
electromagnetic follow-up program in the regime of routine detections with the
advanced GW instruments expected within this decade. In that regime
multi-wavelength observations will play a significant role in completing the
astrophysical identification of GW sources. We present the methods and results
from this first combined analysis and discuss its implications in terms of

Search for Gravitational Waves from Low Mass Compact Binary Coalescence in LIGO's Sixth Science Run and Virgo's Science Runs 2 and 3
We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact
binaries using LIGO and Virgo observations between July 7, 2009 and October 20,
2010. We searched for signals from binaries with total mass between 2 and 25
solar masses; this includes binary neutron stars, binary black holes, and
binaries consisting of a black hole and neutron star. The detectors were
sensitive to systems up to 40 Mpc distant for binary neutron stars, and further
for higher mass systems. No gravitational-wave signals were detected. We report
upper limits on the rate of compact binary coalescence as a function of total
mass, including the results from previous LIGO and Virgo observations. The
cumulative 90%-confidence rate upper limits of the binary coalescence of binary
neutron star, neutron star- black hole and binary black hole systems are 1.3 x
10^{-4}, 3.1 x 10^{-5} and 6.4 x 10^{-6} Mpc^{-3}yr^{-1}, respectively. These
upper limits are up to a factor 1.4 lower than previously derived limits. We
