Calibration of the galaxy cluster M_500-Y_X relation with XMM-Newton
The quantity Y_ X, the product of the X-ray temperature T_ X and gas mass M_
g, has recently been proposed as a robust low-scatter mass indicator for galaxy
clusters. Using precise measurements from XMM-Newton data of a sample of 10
relaxed nearby clusters, spanning a Y_ X range of 10^13 -10^15 M_sun keV, we
investigate the M_500-Y_ X relation. The M_500 - Y_ X data exhibit a power law
relation with slope alpha=0.548 \pm 0.027, close to the self-similar value
(3/5) and independent of the mass range considered. However, the normalisation
is \sim 20% below the prediction from numerical simulations including cooling
and galaxy feedback. We discuss two effects that could contribute to the
normalisation offset: an underestimate of the true mass due to the HE
assumption used in X-ray mass estimates, and an underestimate of the hot gas
mass fraction in the simulations. A comparison of the functional form and
scatter of the relations between various observables and the mass suggest that
Y_ X may indeed be a better mass proxy than T_ X or M_g,500.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Bifurcated polarization rotation in bismuth-based piezoelectrics
ABO3 perovskite-type solid solutions display a large variety of structural and physical properties, which can be tuned by chemical composition or external parameters such as temperature, pressure, strain, electric, or magnetic fields. Some solid solutions show remarkably enhanced physical properties including colossal magnetoresistance or giant piezoelectricity. It has been recognized that structural distortions, competing on the local level, are key to understanding and tuning these remarkable properties, yet, it remains a challenge to experimentally observe such local structural details. Here, from neutron pair-distribution analysis, a temperature-dependent 3D atomic-level model of the lead-free piezoelectric perovskite Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) is reported. The statistical analysis of this model shows how local distortions compete, how this competition develops with temperature, and, in particular, how different polar displacements of Bi3+ cations coexist as a bifurcated polarization, highlighting the interest of Bi-based materials in the search for new lead-free piezoelectrics
XMM-Newton detection of two clusters of galaxies with strong SPT Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect signatures
We report on the discovery of two galaxy clusters, SPT-CL J2332-5358 and
SPT-CL J2342-5411, in X-rays. These clusters were also independently detected
through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect by the South Pole Telescope, and
confirmed in the optical band by the Blanco Cosmology Survey. They are thus the
first clusters detected under survey conditions by all major cluster search
approaches. The X-ray detection is made within the frame of the XMM-BCS cluster
survey utilizing a novel XMM-Newton mosaic mode of observations. The present
study makes the first scientific use of this operation mode. We estimate the
X-ray spectroscopic temperature of SPT-CL J2332-5358 (at redshift z=0.32) to T
= 9.3 (+3.3/-1.9) keV, implying a high mass, M_{500} = 8.8 +/- 3.8 \times
10^{14} M_{sun}. For SPT-CL J2342-5411, at z=1.08, the available X-ray data
doesn't allow us to directly estimate the temperature with good confidence.
However, using our measured luminosity and scaling relations we estimate that T
= 4.5 +/- 1.3 keV and M_{500} = 1.9 +/- 0.8 \times 10^{14} M_{sun}. We find a
good agreement between the X-ray masses and those estimated from the

Diffusion Tensor MRI to Assess Damage in Healthy and Dystrophic Skeletal Muscle after Lengthening Contractions
The purpose of this study was to determine if variables calculated from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) would serve as a reliable marker of damage after a muscle strain injury in dystrophic (mdx) and wild type (WT) mice. Unilateral injury to the tibialis anterior muscle (TA) was induced in vivo by 10 maximal lengthening contractions. High resolution T1- and T2-weighted structural MRI, including T2 mapping and spin echo DTI was acquired on a 7T small animal MRI system. Injury was confirmed by a significant loss of isometric torque (85% in mdx versus 42% in WT). Greater increases in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), axial, and radial diffusivity (AD and RD) of the injured muscle were present in the mdx mice versus controls. These changes were paralleled by decreases in fractional anisotropy (FA). Additionally, T2 was increased in the mdx mice, but the spatial extent of the changes was less than those in the DTI parameters. The data suggest that DTI is an accurate indicator of muscle injury, even at early time points where the MR signal changes are dominated by local edema
The galaxy cluster Ysz-Lx and Ysz-M relations from the WMAP 5-yr data
We use multifrequency matched filters to estimate, in the WMAP 5-year data,
the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) fluxes of 893 ROSAT NORAS/REFLEX clusters spanning
the luminosity range Lx,[0.1-2.4]keV = 2 10^{41} - 3.5 10^{45} erg s^{-1}. The
filters are spatially optimised by using the universal pressure profile
recently obtained from combining XMM-Newton observations of the REXCESS sample
and numerical simulations. Although the clusters are individually only
marginally detected, we are able to firmly measure the SZ signal (>10 sigma)
when averaging the data in luminosity/mass bins. The comparison between the
bin-averaged SZ signal versus luminosity and X-ray model predictions shows
excellent agreement, implying that there is no deficit in SZ signal strength
relative to expectations from the X-ray properties of clusters. Using the
individual cluster SZ flux measurements, we directly constrain the Y500-Lx and
Y500-M500 relations, where Y500 is the Compton y-parameter integrated over a
sphere of radius r500. The Y500-M500 relation, derived for the first time in
such a wide mass range, has a normalisation Y*500=[1.60 pm 0.19] 10^{-3}
arcmin^2 at M500=3 10^{14} h^{1} Msun, in excellent agreement with the X-ray
prediction of 1.54 10^{-3} arcmin^2, and a mass exponent of alpha=1.79 pm 0.17,
consistent with the self-similar expectation of 5/3. Constraints on the
redshift exponent are weak due to the limited redshift range of the sample,

Intracluster gas pressure, entropy injection and redshift evolution
We study the effect of entropy injection in the intracluster medium (ICM) in
light of the recent observationally determined universal pressure profile of
the ICM. Beginning with a power-law entropy profile that is expected in the
absence of any feedback, we show that a simple universal prescription of
entropy injection results in the final, observed universal pressure profile.
This simple prescription has two components, one associated with an overall
increase in entropy and another associated with injection in the central parts
of the cluster. Importantly, both the components of entropy injection are
needed to produce the final universal pressure profile. This is indicative of a
need of both preheating the ICM as well {\it in situ} AGN/SNe heating. We
demonstrate the usefulness of the method by extending the calculations to
clusters at high redshift, and predict redshift evolution of cluster scaling
relations that can be tested against data. We show that the self-similar
evolution of the universal pressure profile is equivalent to a negative
evolution of entropy injection with redshift, with a scaling . We also show the current observational data are

Two-Particle Correlations in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
Two-particle momentum correlations between pairs of identical particles
produced in relativistic heavy-ion reactions can be analyzed to extract the
space-time structure of the collision fireball. We review recent progress in
the application of this method, based on newly developed theoretical tools and
new high-quality data from heavy-ion collision experiments. Implications for
our understanding of the collision dynamics and for the search for the

Parameterization Effects in the analysis of AMI Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Observations
Most Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) and X-ray analyses of galaxy clusters try to
constrain the cluster total mass and/or gas mass using parameterised models and
assumptions of spherical symmetry and hydrostatic equilibrium. By numerically
exploring the probability distributions of the cluster parameters given the
simulated interferometric SZ data in the context of Bayesian methods, and
assuming a beta-model for the electron number density we investigate the
capability of this model and analysis to return the simulated cluster input
quantities via three rameterisations. In parameterisation I we assume that the
T is an input parameter. We find that parameterisation I can hardly constrain
the cluster parameters. We then investigate parameterisations II and III in
which fg(r200) replaces temperature as a main variable. In parameterisation II
we relate M_T(r200) and T assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. We find that
parameterisation II can constrain the cluster physical parameters but the
temperature estimate is biased low. In parameterisation III, the virial theorem
replaces the hydrostatic equilibrium assumption. We find that parameterisation
III results in unbiased estimates of the cluster properties. We generate a
second simulated cluster using a generalised NFW (GNFW) pressure profile and
analyse it with an entropy based model to take into account the temperature
gradient in our analysis and improve the cluster gas density distribution. This
model also constrains the cluster physical parameters and the results show a
radial decline in the gas temperature as expected. The mean cluster total mass
estimates are also within 1 sigma from the simulated cluster true values.
However, we find that for at least interferometric SZ analysis in practice at
the present time, there is no differences in the AMI visibilities between the

Objectively Measured Physical Activity Reduces the Risk of Mortality among Brazilian Older Adults.
OBJECTIVES: Use of objectively measured physical activity (PA) in older adults to assess relationship between PA and risk of all-causes mortality is scarce. This study evaluated the associations of PA based on accelerometry and a questionnaire with the risk of mortality among older adults from a city in Southern Brazil. DESIGN: A cohort study. SETTING: Urban area of Pelotas, Southern Brazil. PARTICIPANTS: A representative sample of older adults (≥60 y) from Pelotas, enrolled in 2014. MEASUREMENTS: Overall physical activity (mg), light physical activity (LPA), and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were estimated by raw accelerometer data. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire estimated leisure time and commuting PA. Hazard ratios (excluding deaths in the first 6 mo) stratified by sex were estimated by Cox regression analysis considering adjustment for confounders. RESULTS: From the 1451 older adults interviewed in 2014, 145 died (10%) after a follow-up of an average 2.6 years. Men and women in the highest tertile of overall PA had on average a 77% and 92% lower risk of mortality than their less active counterparts (95% confidence interval [CI] = .06-.84 and 95% CI = .01-.65, respectively). The highest tertile of LPA was also related to a lower risk of mortality in individuals of both sexes (74% and 91% lower risk among men and women, respectively). MVPA statistically reduced the risk of mortality only among women (hazard ratio [HR] = .30 and HR = .07 in the second and third tertiles). Self-reported leisure-time PA was statistically associated with a lower risk of mortality only among men. Women in the highest tertiles of commuting PA showed a lower risk of mortality than those in the reference group. CONCLUSION: Accelerometry-based PA was associated with a lower risk of mortality among Brazilian older adults. Older individuals should practice any type of PA. J Am Geriatr Soc 68:137-146, 2019
