Mechanisms of THz generation from silver nanoparticle and nanohole arrays illuminated by 100 fs pulses of infrared light
Metal enrichment processes
There are many processes that can transport gas from the galaxies to their
environment and enrich the environment in this way with metals. These metal
enrichment processes have a large influence on the evolution of both the
galaxies and their environment. Various processes can contribute to the gas
transfer: ram-pressure stripping, galactic winds, AGN outflows, galaxy-galaxy
interactions and others. We review their observational evidence, corresponding
simulations, their efficiencies, and their time scales as far as they are known
to date. It seems that all processes can contribute to the enrichment. There is
not a single process that always dominates the enrichment, because the
efficiencies of the processes vary strongly with galaxy and environmental
properties.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Space Science

EFFECT OF CORTISOL TREATMENT ON HORMONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA
The temporal relationship between administration of cortisol and serum 17Α-hydroxyprogesterone was investigated in five patients aged 9-19 years with congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. There was marked variability in the 17Α-hydroxyprogesterone response (determined hourly for 24 h) of individual patients to administration of cortisol. Mean concentration was less than 0.030 Μmol/l in one patient but 0.519Μ mol/l in another. Levels were higher in all patients while off treatment, and were greatest in those with salt-losing adrenal hyperplasia. Growth hormone secretion was not suppressed by treatment with cortisol. Withdrawal of cortisol for 3 days resulted in a significant decrease in the mean serum FSH/LH ratio and a rise in serum testosterone in all subjects. Episodic release of gonadotrophins persisted in the adolescent patients.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75713/1/j.1365-2265.1977.tb02002.x.pd
Analytical solutions to zeroth-order dispersion relations of a cylindrical metallic nanowire
Zeroth-order complex dispersion relations of a cylindrical metallic nanowire
have been solved out analytically with approximate methods. The analytical
solutions are valid for the sections of the dispersion relations whose
frequencies are close to the Surface Plasmon frequency. The back bending of the
Surface Plasmon-Polaritons(SPPs) can be well described by the analytical
solutions, confirming that the back bending is originated from the metal Ohmic
loss. The utility of the back bending point in the dispersion relation for the
measurement of the metallic Ohimc loss has also been suggested.Comment: 6pages, 3figure
Measurement of the p-pbar -> Wgamma + X cross section at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and WWgamma anomalous coupling limits
The WWgamma triple gauge boson coupling parameters are studied using p-pbar
-> l nu gamma + X (l = e,mu) events at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were
collected with the DO detector from an integrated luminosity of 162 pb^{-1}
delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross section times branching
fraction for p-pbar -> W(gamma) + X -> l nu gamma + X with E_T^{gamma} > 8 GeV
and Delta R_{l gamma} > 0.7 is 14.8 +/- 1.6 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) +/- 1.0 (lum)
pb. The one-dimensional 95% confidence level limits on anomalous couplings are
-0.88 < Delta kappa_{gamma} < 0.96 and -0.20 < lambda_{gamma} < 0.20.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. D Rapid Communication
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Lepton + Jets Events with Lifetime b-tagging
We present a measurement of the top quark pair () production cross
section () in collisions at TeV
using 230 pb of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon),
missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ
lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the
purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we
measure pb, in
agreement with the standard model expectation.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables Submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Measurement of the ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet production cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross section in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a study of events with Z bosons and jets produced at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV.
The data sample consists of nearly 14,000 Z/G* -> e+e- candidates corresponding
to the integrated luminosity of 0.4 fb-1 collected using the D0 detector.
Ratios of the Z/G* + >= n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/G* cross
section have been measured for n = 1 to 4 jet events. Our measurements are
found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and
with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and
hadronization.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, slightly modified, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Measurement of the Isolated Photon Cross Section in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
The cross section for the inclusive production of isolated photons has been
measured in p anti-p collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span transverse momenta 23 to 300 GeV
and have pseudorapidity |eta|<0.9. The cross section is compared with the
results from two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The
theoretical predictions agree with the measurement within uncertainties.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.

A microscopic model for the structural transition and spin gap formation in alpha'-NaV2O5
We present a microscopic model for alpha'-NaV2O5. Using an extended Hubbard
model for the vanadium layers we derive an effective low-energy model
consisting of pseudospin Ising chains and Heisenberg chains coupled to each
other. We find a ``spin-Peierls-Ising'' phase transition which causes charge
ordering on every second ladder and superexchange alternation on the other
ladders. This transition can be identified with the first transition of the two
closeby transitions observed in experiment. Due to charge ordering the
effective coupling between the lattice and the superexchange is enhanced. This
is demonstrated within a Slater-Koster approximation. It leads to a second
instability with superexchange alternation on the charge-ordered ladders due to
an alternating shift of the O sites on the rungs of that ladder. We can explain
within our model the observed spin gap, the anomalous BCS ratio, and the
anomalous shift of the critical temperature of the first transition in a
magnetic field. To test the calculated superstructure we determine the
low-energy magnon dispersion and find agreement with experiment.Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures include
