Phase behavior of (CO2 + H-2) and (CO2+ N-2) at temperatures between (218.15 and 303.15)K at pressures up to 15 MPa
Outer crust of a cold non-accreting magnetar
The outer crust structure and composition of a cold, non-accreting magnetar
is studied. We model the outer crust to be made of fully equilibrated matter
where ionized nuclei form a Coulomb crystal embedded in an electron gas. The
main effects of the strong magnetic field are those of quantizing the electron
motion in Landau levels and of modifying the nuclear single particle levels
producing, on average, an increased binding of nucleons in nuclei present in
the Coulomb lattice. The effect of an homogeneous and constant magnetic field
on nuclear masses has been predicted by using a covariant density functional,
in which induced currents and axial deformation due to the presence of a
magnetic field that breaks time-reversal symmetry have been included
self-consistently in the nucleon and meson equations of motion. Although not
yet observed, for G both effects contribute to produce
different compositions and to enlarge the range of pressures typically present
in common neutron stars. Specifically, in such a regime, the magnetic field
effects on nuclei favor the appearance of heavier nuclei at low pressures. As
increases, such heavier nuclei are also preferred up to larger pressures.
In the most extreme case, the whole outer crust is almost made of

CTQ 414: A New Gravitational Lens
We report the discovery and ground based observations of the new
gravitational lens CTQ 414. The source quasar lies at a redshift of z = 1.29
with a B magnitude of 17.6. Ground based optical imaging reveals two point
sources separated by 1.2 arcsec with a magnitude difference of roughly 1 mag.
Subtraction of two stellar point spread functions from images obtained in
subarcsecond seeing consistently leaves behind a faint, residual object. Fits
for two point sources plus an extended object places the fainter object
collinear with the two brighter components. Subsequent HST/NICMOS observations
have confirmed the identification of the fainter object as the lensing galaxy.
VLA observations at 8.46 GHz reveal that all components of the lensing system
are radio quiet down to the 0.2 mJy flux level.Comment: Latex, 18 pages including 2 ps figures; accepted for publication in

Unjamming a granular hopper by vibration
We present an experimental study of the outflow of a hopper continuously
vibrated by a piezoelectric device. Outpouring of grains can be achieved for
apertures much below the usual jamming limit observed for non vibrated hoppers.
Granular flow persists down to the physical limit of one grain diameter, a
limit reached for a finite vibration amplitude. For the smaller orifices, we
observe an intermittent regime characterized by alternated periods of flow and
blockage. Vibrations do not significantly modify the flow rates both in the
continuous and the intermittent regime. The analysis of the statistical
features of the flowing regime shows that the flow time significantly increases
with the vibration amplitude. However, at low vibration amplitude and small
orifice sizes, the jamming time distribution displays an anomalous statistics
Redefining the role of obstacles in pedestrian evacuation
The placement of obstacles in front of doors is believed to be an effective strategy to increase the flow of pedestrians, hence improving the evacuation process. Since it was first suggested, this counterintuitive feature is considered a hallmark of pedestrian flows through bottlenecks. Indeed, despite the little experimental evidence, the placement of an obstacle has been hailed as the panacea for solving evacuation problems. In this work, we challenge this idea and experimentally demonstrate that the pedestrians flow rate is not necessarily altered by the presence of an obstacle. This result - which is at odds with recent demonstrations on its suitability for the cases of granular media, sheep and mice - differs from the outcomes of most of existing numerical models, and warns about the risks of carelessly extrapolating animal behaviour to humans. Our experimental findings also reveal an unnoticed phenomenon in relation with the crowd movement in front of the exit: in competitive evacuations, an obstacle attenuates the development of collective transversal rushes, which are hazardous as they might cause falls.Fil: GarcimartĂn, A.. Longitudinal Intra- and Inter-individual variation in T-cell subsets of HIV-infected and uninfected men participating in the LA Multi-Center AIDS Cohort Study.
To assess the intra-individual and inter-individuals biological variation and the effect of aging on lymphocyte T-cells subsets.We assessed lymphocyte phenotypes (CD3, CD4, and CD8 T-cells) in 89 HIV-1-infected and 88 uninfected white non-Hispanic men every 6 months, to examine the biological variation for those measurements, and the average change in lymphocyte phenotype over 34 years.The markers showed significant intra-individuality in HIV-infected and uninfected individuals with index of individuality of <1.4. No mean changes were seen over the 34 years, with the exception of percentage CD4T-cells in HIV-uninfected individuals.In the pre-HAART era, HIV-infected individuals experienced an increase in mean absolute CD3 T-cell numbers (11.21 cells/μL, P = 0.02) and absolute CD8 T-cell numbers (34.57 cell/μl, P < .001), and in the percentage of CD8 T-cells (1.45%, P < .001) per year and a significant decrease in mean absolute CD4 T-cell numbers (23.68 cells/μl, P < .001) and in the percentage of CD4 T-cells (1.49%, P < .001) per year.In the post-HAART era, no changes in mean levels were observed in absolute CD3 T-cell count (P = .15) or percentage (P = .99). Significant decreases were seen in mean count (8.56 cells/μl, P < .001) and percentage (0.59%, P < .001) of CD8 T-cells, and increases in mean absolute count (10.72 cells/μl, P < .001) and percentage (0.47%, P < .001) of CD4 T-cells.With the exception of CD4 (%), no average changes per year were seen in lymphocyte phenotype of HIV-uninfected men. The results of coefficients of variation of intra and inter-individuals of this study can be useful for HIV-1 infection monitoring and in addition the observation could be a useful guide for intra- and inter-individual coefficient variations, and establishing quality goal studies of different blood biomarkers in healthy and other diseases
Localized form of Fock terms in nuclear covariant density functional theory
In most of the successful versions of covariant density functional theory in
nuclei, the Fock terms are not included explicitly, which leads to local
functionals and forms the basis of their widespread applicability at present.
However, it has serious consequences for the description of Gamow-Teller
resonances (GTR) and spin-dipole resonances (SDR) which can only be cured by
adding further phenomenological parameters. Relativistic Hartree-Fock models do
not suffer from these problems. They can successfully describe the GTR and SDR
as well as the isovector part of the Dirac effective mass without any
additional parameters. However, they are non-local and require considerable
numerical efforts. By the zero-range reduction and the Fierz transformation, a
new method is proposed to take into account the Fock terms in local
functionals, which retains the simplicity of conventional models and provides
proper descriptions of the spin-isospin channels and the Dirac masses.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Phys. Rev. C in pres
Multicolor photometry of ten Seyfert 1 galaxies
We present BVI photometry of ten Seyfert 1 galaxies and narrow band H-alpha
images for six of these objects as well. The results indicate that the
luminosity sample distribution has an amplitude of almost 4 magnitudes with an
average of M_B=-20.7. The observed morphologies are confined to early type
galaxies. A barred structure is found in only 2 objects. Despite that early
morphological types are dominant in this sample, integrated (B-V) colors are
very blue. For instance, the SO galaxies show, on average, a (B-V)=0.78. This
effect seems to be caused by the luminosity contribution of the active nucleus
and/or the disk to the total luminosity of the galaxy. In the B band, the
contribution of the active galactic nucleus to the total luminosity of the
galaxy varies from 3% to almost 60% and the bulge to disk luminosity ratio
(L_bulge/L_disk) ranges from 0.6 to 22. Signs of tidal interactions seems to be
a common characteristic since they are observed in 6 of the objects and one of
them seems to be located in a poor cluster not yet identified in the
literature. H_alpha extended emission is rare, with only 1 galaxy showing clear
evidence of it. Luminosity profile decomposition shows that the model Gauss +
bulge + disk properly reproduces the surface brightness of the galaxies.
However, in order to account for the luminosity profile, most of the disk
galaxies needs the inner truncated exponential form with a central cutoff
radius ranging from 3 to 10 kpc. This is interpreted in terms of reddened
regions that are well identified in the B-V color maps. These regions present
very similar colors among them, with (B-V)~1.2. This fact could be associated
to the presence of dust confined in the inner regions of the galaxies.Comment: 14 pages, 25 figures. Accepted to Astronomy & Astrophysic
Pattern formation without heating in an evaporative convection experiment
We present an evaporation experiment in a single fluid layer. When latent
heat associated to the evaporation is large enough, the heat flow through the
free surface of the layer generates temperature gradients that can destabilize
the conductive motionless state giving rise to convective cellular structures
without any external heating. The sequence of convective patterns obtained here
without heating, is similar to that obtained in B\'enard-Marangoni convection.
This work present the sequence of spatial bifurcations as a function of the
layer depth. The transition between square to hexagonal pattern, known from
non-evaporative experiments, is obtained here with a similar change in
