The Paranormal is (Still) Normal: The Sociological Implications of a Survey of Paranormal Experiences in Great Britain
Historically, there has been limited sociological interest in the paranormal and no systematic study of reported paranormal experiences. There are also few medium-to-large-scale survey results with nationally representative populations focusing on paranormal experiences. This paper provides details of an exploratory survey conducted in 2009 with a nationally representative sample of 4,096 adults aged 16 years and over across Great Britain. Our findings show that 37% of British adults report at least one paranormal experience and that women, those who are middle-aged or individuals resident in the South West are more likely to report such experiences. These results establish incidence levels of reported paranormal experiences in contemporary Britain. We argue also that they merit a more sustained sociological consideration of the paranormal. In this respect we renew and update the robust justification and call for serious research positioning the paranormal as a social phenomenon, originally proposed well over thirty years ago by Greeley (1975)
Photon Statistics; Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Single Quantum Systems
A unified description of multitime correlation functions, nonlinear response
functions, and quantum measurements is developed using a common generating
function which allows a direct comparison of their information content. A
general formal expression for photon counting statistics from single quantum
objects is derived in terms of Liouville space correlation functions of the
material system by making a single assumption that spontaneous emission is
described by a master equation
Spatial and temporal variations in Pb concentrations and isotopic composition in road dust, farmland soil and vegetation in proximity to roads since cessation of use of leaded petrol in the UK
Results are presented for a study of spatial distributions and temporal trends in concentrations of lead (Pb) from different sources in soil and vegetation of an arable farm in central Scotland in the decade since the use of leaded petrol was terminated. Isotopic analyses revealed that in all of the samples analysed, the Pb conformed to a binary mixture of petrol Pb and Pb from industrial or indigenous geological sources and that locally enhanced levels of petrol Pb were restricted to within 10 m of a motorway and 3 m of a minor road. Overall, the dominant source of Pb was historical emissions from nearby industrial areas. There was no discernible change in concentration or isotopic composition of Pb in surface soil or vegetation over the decade since the ban on the sale of leaded petrol. There was an order of magnitude decrease in Pb concentrations in road dust over the study period, but petrol Pb persisted at up to 43% of the total Pb concentration in 2010. Similar concentrations and spatial distributions of petrol Pb and non petrol Pb in vegetation in both 2001 and 2010, with enhanced concentrations near roads, suggested that redistribution of previously deposited material has operated continuously over that period, maintaining a transfer pathway of Pb into the biosphere. The results for vegetation and soil transects near minor roads provided evidence of a non petrol Pb source associated with roads/traffic, but surface soil samples from the vicinity of a motorway failed to show evidence of such a source
Interpretation of quantum jump and diffusion-processes illustrated on the Bloch sphere
It is shown that the evolution of an open quantum system whose density operator obeys a Markovian master equation can in some cases be meaningfully described in terms of stochastic Schrödinger equations (SSE’s) for its state vector. A necessary condition for this is that the information carried away from the system by the bath (source of the irreversibility) be recoverable. The primary field of application is quantum optics, where the bath consists of the continuum of electromagnetic modes. The information lost from the system can be recovered using a perfect photodetector. The state of the system conditioned on the photodetections undergoes stochastic quantum jumps. Alternative measurement schemes on the outgoing light (homodyne and heterodyne detection) are shown to give rise to SSE’s with diffusive terms. These three detection schemes are illustrated on a simple quantum system, the two-level atom, giving new perspectives on the interpretation of measurement results. The reality of these and other stochastic processes for state vectors is discussed
Trends in sexually transmitted infections in united states ambulatory care clinics from 2005–2016
We examined the prevalence trends of non-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sexually transmitted infections (STI) and associated patient characteristics in U.S. ambulatory-care settings from 2005–2016. We conducted a retrospective repeated cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) for individuals aged 15–64 with a non-HIV STI-related visit. Data were combined into three periods (2005–2008, 2009–2012, and 2013–2016) to obtain reliable estimates. Logistic regression was used for analysis. A total of 19.5 million weighted, non-HIV STI-related ambulatory visits from 2005–2016 were identified. STI-related visits per 100,000 ambulatory care visits increased significantly over the study period: 206 (95% CI = 153–259), 343 (95% CI = 279–407), and 361 (95% CI = 277–446) in 2005–2008, 2009–2012, and 2013–2016, respectively (Ptrend = 0.003). These increases were mainly driven by increases in HPV-related visits (56 to 163 per 100,000 visits) from 2005–2008 to 2009–2012, followed by syphilis-or gonorrhea-related visits (30 to 67 per 100,000 visits) from 2009–2012 to 2013–2016. Higher odds of having STI-related visit were associated with younger age (aged 15–24: aOR = 4.45; 95% CI = 3.19–6.20 and aged 25–44: aOR = 3.59; 95% CI = 2.71–4.77) vs. 45–64-year-olds, Black race (aOR = 2.41; 95% CI = 1.78–3.25) vs. White, and HIV diagnosis (aOR = 10.60; 95% CI = 5.50–20.27) vs. no HIV diagnosis. STI-related office visits increased by over 75% from 2005–2016, and were largely driven by HPV-related STIs and syphilis-or gonorrhea-related STIs
Role of Sterile Neutrino Warm Dark Matter in Rhenium and Tritium Beta Decays
Sterile neutrinos with mass in the range of one to a few keV are important as
extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics and are serious dark
matter (DM) candidates. This DM mass scale (warm DM) is in agreement with both
cosmological and galactic observations. We study the role of a keV sterile
neutrino through its mixing with a light active neutrino in Rhenium 187 and
Tritium beta decays. We pinpoint the energy spectrum of the beta particle, 0 <
T_e < (Q_{beta} - m_s), as the region where a sterile neutrino could be
detected and where its mass m_s could be measured. This energy region is at
least 1 keV away rom the region suitable to measure the mass of the light
active neutrino, located near the endpoint Q_{beta} . The emission of a keV
sterile neutrino in a beta decay could show up as a small kink in the spectrum
of the emitted beta particle. With this in view, we perform a careful
calculation of the Rhenium and Tritium beta spectra and estimate the size of
this perturbation by means of the dimensionless ratio R of the sterile neutrino
to the active neutrino contributions. We comment on the possibility of
searching for sterile neutrino signatures in two experiments which are
currently running at present, MARE and KATRIN, focused on the Rhenium 187 and

A geometric approach to time evolution operators of Lie quantum systems
Lie systems in Quantum Mechanics are studied from a geometric point of view.
In particular, we develop methods to obtain time evolution operators of
time-dependent Schrodinger equations of Lie type and we show how these methods
explain certain ad hoc methods used in previous papers in order to obtain exact
solutions. Finally, several instances of time-dependent quadratic Hamiltonian

Glycoprotein gene truncation in avian metapneumovirus subtype C isolates from the United States
The length of the published glycoprotein (G) gene sequences of avian metapneumovirus subtype-C (aMPV-C) isolated from domestic turkeys and wild birds in the United States (1996–2003) remains controversial. To explore the G gene size variation in aMPV-C by the year of isolation and cell culture passage levels, we examined 21 turkey isolates of aMPV-C at different cell culture passages. The early domestic turkey isolates of aMPV-C (aMPV/CO/1996, aMPV/MN/1a-b, and 2a-b/97) had a G gene of 1,798 nucleotides (nt) that coded for a predicted protein of 585 amino acids (aa) and showed >97% nt similarity with that of aMPV-C isolated from Canada geese. This large G gene got truncated upon serial passages in Vero cell cultures by deletion of 1,015 nt near the end of the open reading frame. The recent domestic turkey isolates of aMPV-C lacked the large G gene but instead had a small G gene of 783 nt, irrespective of cell culture passage levels. In some cultures, both large and small genes were detected, indicating the existence of a mixed population of the virus. Apparently, serial passage of aMPV-C in cell cultures and natural passage in turkeys in the field led to truncation of the G gene, which may be a mechanism of virus evolution for survival in a new host or environment
Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:

which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent
