Trends and Spatial Patterns of Drought Affected Area in Southern South America

    Get PDF
Based on 56 rainfall stations, which cover the period 1961–2008, we analyzed the presence of trends in the drought-affected area over southern South America (SSA) at different time scales. In order to define drought conditions, we used the standardized precipitation index, which was calculated on time scales of 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. The trends were estimated following both a linear and a non-linear approach. The non-linear approach was based on the residual of the empirical mode decomposition, a recently proposed methodology, which is robust in presence of non-stationary data. This assessment indicates the existence of reversals in the trends of the drought affected, area around the 1990s, from decreasing trends during the first period to increasing trends during the recent period. This is indicative of the existence of a low-frequency variability that modulates regional precipitation patterns at different temporal scales, and warns about possible future consequences in the social and economic sectors if trends towards an increase in the drought affected area continue.Fil: Rivera, Juan Antonio. Translation and Translanguaging Pedagogies in Intercomprehension and Multilingual Teaching

    Get PDF
Since 2007, California State University, Long Beach has developed and offered courses that highlight students’ pre-existing linguistic repertoires in English and in the Romance languages. These courses are unique in that they build upon a multilingual base for the acquisition of new languages through the method of intercomprehension. As an approach that moves among languages, Intercomprehension places learners in conditions that are conducive to translanguaging and translation. This paper discusses the role of translation and translanguaging in Intercomprehension as a pedagogical approach in these courses. Since our students are constantly moving between English and one or more Romance language(s), they actively bring the other Romance languages they are learning into the translingual repertoire they already practice through the multilingual learning strategies deployed in intercomprehension.

The CLARIS LPB database: constructing a long-term daily hydro-meteorological dataset for La Plata Basin, Southern South America

    Get PDF
CLARIS LPB database was built within the framework of the CLARIS LPB project “A Europe-South America Network for climate Change Assessment and Impact Studies in La Plata Basin” of the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The main variables available in the database are rainfall, temperature, radiation, heliophany and streamflow, constituting a high-quality daily hydro-meteorological dataset for scientific purpose available at http://wp32.at.fcen.uba.ar/. The objective of this article is to describe CLARIS LPB database construction, quality control and spatial and temporal characteristics. Due to the interactions with more than 60 institutions, the network of stations expanded from 107 stations in the FP6 CLARIS to more than 9000 stations in the FP7 CLARIS LPB. More than 800 maximum and minimum temperatures series, more than 8000 rainfall series, 68 radiation series, 29 heliophany series, and 58 streamflow series are available in the database webpage. The number of stations also varied greatly as a function of time, and decadal variations were evident in both rainfall and temperature stations with at least 20% of data missing. According to the characteristics analysed, this dataset provides spatially consistent climatic time series which enable a variety of empirical climate studies. It was already used as input for hydrological models, for the validation and analysis of present-day regional and global climate model outputs, for improvement in the analysis of recent past climate variability in La Plata Basin, for analysing palaeohydrological reconstructions of the past climate variability, among others. Finally, the spatially highly dense daily database of rainfall and maximum and minimum temperatures allowed the generation of gridded products.Fil: Penalba, Olga Clorinda. Preferential accumulation of Foxp3E2+ regulatory T cells with highly immunosuppressive phenotype in breast cancer subjects

    Get PDF
Regulatory T CD4+Foxp3+ (Treg) cells are a cellular subset involved in the maintenance of immune self-tolerance and homeostasis but, as a double-edged sword, they can also suppress anti-tumor immune response and favor tumor progression. Therefore, Foxp3+ Treg cells represent a primary target for cancer immunotherapy, which finally aims at restoring the ability of the immune system to detect and destroy cancer cells. The tumor microenvironment has been reported to contain a "rich milieu" of molecules able to increase the recruitment of Foxp3+ Treg cells to the tumor site. Compelling experimental evidence has shown an increased percentage of Foxp3+ Treg cells in the tumor microenvironment of subjects with different tumors, including breast cancer (BC). Moreover, their abundant presence in tumor infiltrates leads to reduced survival in cancer subjects and inversely correlates with clinical response of BC to therapy. The transcription factor Foxp3 plays a critical role in regulating the development and the immunosuppressive function of Treg cells and up to 8 different Foxp3 splicing variants have been described in human subjects, but their role and function still remain elusive. Recently, it has been found that among all the different Foxp3 splicing forms, those containing the exon2 (Foxp3E2) are necessary for the induction and establishment of the suppressive phenotype of Treg cells. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of Foxp3E2+ Treg cells in the context of tumor growth, dissecting whether increased immunosuppression observed in BC subjects, could be secondary to the preferential accumulation of Foxp3E2+ Treg cells. In conclusion, the evaluation of the number of Foxp3E2+ Treg cells in BC tumors could represent a prognostic assay for the assessment of tumor progression, severity and prognosis. In addition, Foxp3E2+ Treg cells could be pharmacological targeted in order to inhibit their immunosuppressive activity in the tumor microenvironment, thus sustaining anti-tumor immune response and reducing tumor progression

Paul Ricœur on Social Imagination. Across Tradition and Innovation

    Get PDF
This paper aims to extend the implication of Paul Ricœur’s phenomenology of productive imagination to the social sphere. Specifically, through reference to Ricœur’s anthropological analysis of imagination and his reflections on the tensive categories of ideology and utopia, belonging and distanciation, this essay seeks to rethink the social lifeworld through the recomposition of a framework between tradition and innovation. The attention will be focused on human productive imagination and on the constitution of the shared social imaginary. These reflections will open up to a renewal of the concepts of reality and truth. This paper aims to extend the implication of Paul Ricœur’s phenomenology of productive imagination to the social sphere. Making Sense of History with Paul Ricœur and Jan Patočka: From the Past, In the Present, Toward the Future

    Get PDF
Paul Ricœur and Jan Patočka are considered among the most important phenomenologists of the 20th century. As with Ricœur, Patočka’s philosophy is shaped by an enduring critical confrontation with Husserl’s phenomenology and Heidegger’s phenomenological analyses of Dasein. The present paper aims at analyzing Ricœur’s and Patočka’s convergences and mutual inspirations in their perspectives on the topic of history. More precisely, I will take up the question of the meaning of history in Ricœur and Patočka as profoundly influenced by their readings of Husserl’s Krisis. Then, the attention will be turned to Ricœur’s concept of historicity and Patočka’s notion of care of the soul as concerns involved in the search for meaning in history as an open-ended mediation. In this context, I will discuss Ricœur’s and Patočka’s critical examination of Heidegger’s conception of thrownness (Geworfenheit) and projection (Entwerfen), that is, Dasein’s already-being-in-the-world and its disclosedness, as necessary concepts for understanding their own philosophical approaches to history
