This article examines the term "mestizo" in the context of the discourse of Guaman Poma de Ayala, an educated multilingual indigenous subject, who was a witness and a protagonist of the dissolution of the Inca order. The first part of the article examines an "other" perspective on the term "mestizo" in Guaman Poma's work that shows the complexity of meanings that is contained by a widely circulated, key term of Hispanic colonial literature while rescuing its specific uses. In the second part, I propose that Guaman Poma builds a separatist discourse that relates the figure of the mestizo with translation and conversion, while presenting multilingualism as an alternative to conversion/translation, on one hand, and the separation of Indians, Spaniards and Blacks as an alternative to the mixture of castes

Safeguarding Privacy Through Deep Learning Techniques

Over the last few years, there has been a growing need to meet minimum security and privacy requirements. Both public and private companies have had to comply with increasingly stringent standards, such as the ISO 27000 family of standards, or the various laws governing the management of personal data. The huge amount of data to be managed has required a huge effort from the employees who, in the absence of automatic techniques, have had to work tirelessly to achieve the certification objectives. Unfortunately, due to the delicate information contained in the documentation relating to these problems, it is difficult if not impossible to obtain material for research and study purposes on which to experiment new ideas and techniques aimed at automating processes, perhaps exploiting what is in ferment in the scientific community and linked to the fields of ontologies and artificial intelligence for data management. In order to bypass this problem, it was decided to examine data related to the medical world, which, especially for important reasons related to the health of individuals, have gradually become more and more freely accessible over time, without affecting the generality of the proposed methods, which can be reapplied to the most diverse fields in which there is a need to manage privacy-sensitive information

Variability in the x-ray emission of H0538+608: An unusual AM Her-type cataclysmic variable

Get PDF
The x-ray emissions of AM Herculis-type object H0538+608 were observed using the ROSAT satellite. Evidence was found for a highly varying soft x-ray component with a much lower intensity than is typical for this class. The spectrum was well fit by a thermal bremsstrahlung model (exponential plus gaunt factor) of 35 +/- 5 KeV plus a 0.05 +/- 0.01 KeV blackbody component, with absorption by interstellar medium with a neutral hydrogen column density of log N(sub H) (atoms/sq cm) = 20.2. No obvious periodic variations were found. There was very little correlation between the hard and soft x-ray bands

Effect of "wooden breast" appearance on poultry meat quality, histological traits, and lesions characterization

The purposes of the study were to investigate the effects of Wooden Breast (WB) myodegeneration on poultry meat quality and to give a contribution in typing lesions morphology. At a poultry meat cutting facility, 474 carcasses of a high-breast-yield hybrid chickens were inspected for WB condition, and 30 normal (N) and 30 affected (WB) breast fillets (Pectoralis major) were randomly selected. The WB condition represented 53.2% of the examined carcasses. Weight, cross sectional area (CSA), pH, L*, a*, b* colour values, water-holding capacity, and Warner-Bratzler shear force were determined. Samples were also visually and histologically evaluated. Affected samples were heavier, thicker, paler (P < 0.001), and characterized by palpatory hardness and lower water holding capacity (P < 0.05). Macroscopically, abnormalities were primarily localized in the cranial portion of the fillet and defined by the presence of bulges, petechiae, fluid and clear exudate, and higher pH. Microscopically, the WB condition was characterized by muscle fibres with greater CSA (P < 0.001) and higher giant fibres prevalence (P < 0.01). Data suggest a relationship between breast weight and WB condition

Disentangling the role of wild birds in avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) epidemiology: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Given the avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) disease burden in poultry worldwide and the evidence of a possible role played by wild birds in the virus epidemiology, the present study summarizes aMPV serological and molecular data on free-ranging avifauna available in the literature by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. A computerized literature research was performed on PubMed, Scopus, CAB Direct and Web of Science to identify relevant publications across the period 1990–2021, along with the screening of reference lists. A random-effect model was applied to calculate pooled prevalence estimates with 95% confidence intervals. The inconsistency index statistic (I2) was applied to assess between-study heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses for molecular studies only were performed according to geographical area of samplings, taxonomic order, genus and migration patterns of the birds surveyed. A total of 11 publications on molecular surveys and 6 on serological ones were retained for analysis. The pooled molecular prevalence was 6% (95% CI: 1–13%) and a high between-study heterogeneity was detected (I2 = 96%, p <.01). Moderator analyses showed statistically significant differences according to geographical area studied, taxonomic order and genus. Concerning serological prevalence, a pooled estimate of 14% (95% CI: 1–39%), along with a high between-study heterogeneity, was obtained (I2 = 98%, p <.01). Moderator analysis was not performed due to the scarcity of eligible serological studies included. Overall, molecular and serological evidence suggests that some wild bird taxa could play a role in aMPV epidemiology. Particularly, wild ducks, geese, gulls and pheasants, according to scientific contributions hereby considered, proved to be susceptible to aMPV, and due to host ecology, may act as a viral carrier or reservoir. Further surveys of wild birds are encouraged for a better comprehension of the poultry/wild bird interface in aMPV epidemiology and for better characterizing the virus host breadth
