Exploratory Content Analysis Using Text Data Mining: Corporate Citizenship Reports of Seven US Companes from 2004 to 2012

This study demonstrates the use of Text Data Mining (TDM) for exploring the content of a collection of Corporate Citizenship(CC) reports. The collection analyzed comprises CC reports produced by seven Dow Jones companies (Citi, Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil, General Motors, Intel, McDonalds and Microsoft) in2004, 2008 and 2012.Exploratory con-tent analysis using TDM enables insights for CC professionals and analysts, in less time using fewer resources, which in turn could help them explore collaboration opportunities around supply chains, re-training programs, and alternative risk mitigation strategies in terms of governance and compliance. In addition, TDM, using supervised machine learning on the whole collection (or corpus) as well as unsupervised machine learning on document collections by year, suggests the integration of CC considerations related to environmental sustain-ability in CC report components discussing the core business of some firms. This method has been used in many contexts in which a collection of documents needs to be categorized and/or analyzed to uncover new patterns and relationships

Política lingüística del portugués en Brasil: del colonialismo al siglo XXI

La política lingüística del portugués en Brasil ha pasado por distintas etapas en la historia y ha determinado el proceso de consolidación de la nación brasileña. En este artículo revisaré históricamente, por medio de una revisión bibliográfica, la política lingüística del portugués en Brasil desde el colonialismo hasta el proceso de expansión de la lengua a nivel internacional en el siglo XXI. Las razones que consolidaron y posicionaron el portugués en Brasil son: primero, la lengua portuguesa apoyó la construcción de la nación durante la colonia, la independencia y los inicios de la república en detrimento de las lenguas indígenas y africanas. Segundo, el portugués brasileño se consolidó como una variedad distinta a la del portugués de Portugal a partir de nacionalismo emergente, que luego se problematizó en la escogencia de la variedad culta. Por último, en el marco de la globalización se crearon dos instituciones supranacionales que fomentan la lengua portuguesa y favorecen los procesos de expansión de la lengua a nivel internacional

Debido a la declaración del Estado de Emergencia Nacional y Sanitaria por parte del gobierno central, y el establecimiento de una situación de cuarentena total en el país, primero, y luego focalizada, en determinadas provincias y departamentos, se suspendieron todo tipo de actividades públicas y privadas. Esto evidentemente tuvo impacto importante en el desarrollo y cumplimiento de las funciones administrativas de las entidades públicas, en los diversos niveles de gobierno, cuyos procedimientos están sujetos al cumplimiento de plazos y a la atribución de responsabilidades para los servidores públicos. Si bien se dictaron, en forma poco ordenada, normas que establecieron la suspensión de los plazos de tramitación, en teoría de todo tipo de procedimiento administrativo, existen plazos, como los de prescripción, especialmente en el caso del Procedimiento Administrativo Disciplinario (en adelante PAD) que, por su naturaleza, están sujetos al cumplimiento de principios y garantías constitucionales, que tutelan, entre otros, intereses del servidor o trabajador público. El presente trabajo cuestiona si los plazos de prescripción del PAD han sido objeto de suspensión expresa por norma legal en sentido estricto, dictada durante el estado de emergencia, y, de no ser ese el caso, si puede interpretarse que dichos plazos se suspendieron, atendiendo a las circunstancias excepcionales de dicho contexto. Finalmente, se analiza si, el Tribunal del Servicio Civil (en adelante TSC), puede suspender dichos plazos de prescripción, a través de los llamados precedentes administrativos vinculantes, en vía de interpretación o incluso de creación normativa administrativa, concluyéndose que ello es incompatible con las garantías y principios antes indicados.Trabajo académic

Prepositional error analysis in EFL students' written compositions

This research project, developed at Uniminuto University, emerged from the difficulties that the lexical category of prepositions causes to EFL learners in general. The researchers were interested in analyzing how a group of students used prepositions in a written task taken from one of their exams. In order to approach the understanding of this phenomenon, the researchers based the analysis on the interlanguage hypothesis, which states that second language learner’s errors are a key to understand their interlanguage (linguistic system) in terms of prepositional usage. As for the methodology of analysis, researchers decided to use the method known as Error Analysis, which is a systematic procedure for analyzing linguistic samples by using taxonomies. 55 EFL learners participated in this research, the group belonged to the course Anglophone Language and Culture VI and the students came from four different groups. After completing the analysis, the conclusion is that prepositions presented a difficult challenge for all the levels of proficiency within the selected courses, and intralingual strategies of learners mainly produced such errors

MedVir: an interactive representation system of multidimensional medical data applied to Traumatic Brain Injury's rehabilitation prediction

Clinicians could model the brain injury of a patient through his brain activity. However, how this model is defined and how it changes when the patient is recovering are questions yet unanswered. In this paper, the use of MedVir framework is proposed with the aim of answering these questions. Based on complex data mining techniques, this provides not only the differentiation between TBI patients and control subjects (with a 72% of accuracy using 0.632 Bootstrap validation), but also the ability to detect whether a patient may recover or not, and all of that in a quick and easy way through a visualization technique which allows interaction

Simulations of magnetic Bragg scattering in transmission electron microscopy

We have simulated the magnetic Bragg scattering in transmission electron microscopy in two antiferromagnetic compounds, NiO and LaMnAsO. This weak magnetic phenomenon was observed in NiO experimentally by Loudon. We have computationally reproduced Loudon's experimental data, and for comparison we have performed calculations for the LaMnAsO compound as a more challenging case, containing lower concentration of magnetic elements and strongly scattering heavier non-magnetic elements. We have also described thickness and voltage dependence of the intensity of the antiferromagnetic Bragg spot for both compounds. We have employed two computational approaches, one assuming a static lattice with Debye-Waller smeared potentials, and another explicitly considering the atomic vibrations within the quantum excitations of phonons model (thermal diffuse scattering). The structural analysis shows that the antiferromagnetic Bragg spot appears in between (111) and (000) reflections for NiO, while for LaMnAsO the antiferromagnetic Bragg spot appears at the position of the (110) reflection in the diffraction pattern, which corresponds to a forbidden reflection of the crystal structure. Calculations predict that the intensity of the magnetic Bragg spot in NiO is significantly stronger than thermal diffuse scattering at room temperature. For LaMnAsO, the magnetic Bragg spot is weaker than the room-temperature thermal diffuse scattering, but its detection can be facilitated at reduced temperatures

Extended partial laryngectomy with functional preservation using the rotational crico-thyrotracheopexy

ObjectivesGlottic tumors with infiltration of the anterior/posterior commissure, and lesions with subglottic, cricoid, or cricoarytenoid joint infiltration have been highly controversial in the past, from the perspective of oncological safety. Although conservation laryngeal resection options exist, most are limited by the extent of resection proscribed by the technique and the postoperative functional results. Oncologically speaking, extended vertical hemilaryngectomy is often the optimal solution. However, limited reconstruction methods often compel total laryngectomy.MethodsEight patients with vocal fold malignancy, which infiltrated the anterior and sometimes the posterior commissure and with subglottic extension and resultant uni/bilateral vocal fold motion impairment, were treated by single stage extended vertical partial laryngectomy with rotational crico-thyrotracheopexy as a functional reconstruction of the laryngeal framework. Patients were evaluated with objective and subjective function tests.ResultsHistologic examination demonstrated tumor-free margins in every case. Definitive decannulation was successful in all cases within 2 weeks. All patients had a stable and adequate airway during follow-up and reported socially acceptable voice. Oral feeding was possible in seven patients.ConclusionRotational crico-thyrotracheopexy, as a single stage reconstruction technique, is based on well-vascularized, readily available, appropriately shaped local tissues, without significant donor site morbidity or need for long-term stenting to reconstruct large laryngeal defects after extended vertical hemilaryngectomy for advanced unilateral glottic tumors and is applicable even with supra/subglottic invasion or infiltration of the contralateral vocal fold. Higher than present global mean sea level recorded by an Early Pliocene intertidal unit in Patagonia (Argentina)

Reconstructions of global mean sea level from earlier warm periods in Earth?s history can helpconstrain future projections of sea level rise. Here we report on the sedimentology and age ofa geological unit in central Patagonia, Argentina, that we dated to the Early Pliocene(4.69?5.23 Ma, 2σ) with strontium isotope stratigraphy. The unit was interpreted as representativeof an intertidal environment, and its elevation was measured with differential GPS atca. 36m above present-day sea level. Considering modern tidal ranges, it was possible toconstrain paleo relative sea level within ±2.7m (1σ). We use glacial isostatic adjustmentmodels and estimates of vertical land movement to calculate that, when the Camaronesintertidal sequence was deposited, global mean sea level was 28.4 ± 11.7m (1σ) above present.This estimate matches those derived from analogous Early Pliocene sea level proxies inthe Mediterranean Sea and South Africa. Evidence from these three locations indicates thatEarly Pliocene sea level may have exceeded 20m above its present level. The unit was interpreted as representative of an intertidal environment and dated to the Early Pliocene (4.69-5.23 Ma) with strontium isotope stratigraphy. The elevation of this unit was measured with differential GPS at ca. 36 m above present-day sea level. Considering modern tidal ranges, it was possible to constrain paleo relative sea level within ±2.5m (1s). We use glacial isostatic adjustment models and estimates of vertical land movement to calculate that, when the Camarones intertidal sequence was deposited, global mean sea level was 28.4 ± 11.7m above present.
