    Digital Fabrication and Its Meanings for Photography and Film

    Bazin, Cavell and other prominent theorists have asserted that movies are essentially photographic, with more recent scholars such as Carroll and Gaut protesting. Today CGI stands as a further counter, in addition to past objections such as editing, animation and blue screen. Also central in debates is whether photography is transparent, that is, whether it allows us to see things in other times and places. I maintain photography is transparent, notwithstanding objections citing digital manipulation. However, taking a cue from Cavell—albeit one poorly outlined in his work—I argue this is not so much because of what photography physically is, but because of what “photography” has come to mean. I similarly argue digital technologies have not significantly altered what cinematic media “are” because they have not fundamentally modified what they mean; and that cinema retains a photographic legacy, even when it abandons photographic technologies to digitally manufacture virtual worlds

    With the aim of preserving artistic heritage, museums have typically removed paintings and furniture from the places they were created for. Over the decades, the curators of these places have begun to request that these artistic works be returned, conscious of the significance that many of these works now have. Some institutions and museums have responded to these requests by providing copies of the original works. Although traditionally these copies were handmade, digital resources, such as audiovisual technology, are now being used. The Taüll 1123 project (Lleida, Spain) is an example of the use of these new tools for the benefit of artistic heritage and of modern visitors

    "Our Care through our eyes": impact of a co-produced digital education programme on nurses' knowledge, confidence and attitudes in providing care for children and young people who have self-harmed: a mixed-methods study in the UK

    Objectives: 1. To determine the impact of a digital educational intervention on the knowledge, attitudes, confidence and behavioural intention of registered children’s nurses working with Children and Young People (CYP) admitted with self-harm 2. To explore the perceived impact, suitability and usefulness of the intervention. Intervention: A digital educational intervention that had been co-produced with CYP service users, registered children’s nurses, and academics. Setting: A prospective, uncontrolled, intervention study with pre and post-intervention measurement, conducted at a large acute NHS Trust in the UK. Participants: From a pool of 251 registered children’s nurses, 98 participants were recruited to complete the intervention (response rate = 39%). At follow-up, 52% of participants completed the post-intervention questionnaire, with 65% (n=33) of those reporting to have completed the digital educational intervention. Primary Outcome measures: Attitudes towards self-harm in CYP was measured using a 13 item questionnaire; knowledge of self-harm in CYP was measured through an adapted 12 item questionnaire; confidence in different areas of practice was measured through Likert scale responses; Self-efficacy for working with CYP who have self-harmed was measured through an adapted version of the Self-efficacy Towards Helping (SETH) scale; Clinical behavioural intention was measured by the Continuing Professional Development Reaction Questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with a purposive sample of participants. Results: For those who completed the intervention (n=33), improvements were observed in knowledge (Effect size, ES: 0.69), confidence, and in some domains relating to attitudes (Effectiveness domain- ES: 0.49), and clinical behavioural intention (Belief about consequences-ES:0.49; Moral Norm-ES: 0.43; Beliefs about capability-ES: 0.42). Qualitative findings suggest participants experienced skill development, feelings of empowerment, and reflection on own practice. Conclusions: The effect of the intervention is promising and demonstrates the potential it has in improving registered children’s nurse’s knowledge, confidence and attitudes. However, further testing is required to confirm this

    The impact of glacier geometry on meltwater plume structure and submarine melt in Greenland fjords

    Meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet often drains subglacially into fjords, driving upwelling plumes at glacier termini. Ocean models and observations of submarine termini suggest that plumes enhance melt and undercutting, leading to calving and potential glacier destabilization. Here we systematically evaluate how simulated plume structure and submarine melt during summer months depends on realistic ranges of subglacial discharge, glacier depth, and ocean stratification from 12 Greenland fjords. Our results show that grounding line depth is a strong control on plume-induced submarine melt: deep glaciers produce warm, salty subsurface plumes that undercut termini, and shallow glaciers produce cold, fresh surface-trapped plumes that can overcut termini. Due to sustained upwelling velocities, plumes in cold, shallow fjords can induce equivalent depth-averaged melt rates compared to warm, deep fjords. These results detail a direct ocean-ice feedback that can affect the Greenland Ice Sheet

    Creativity and commerce: Michael Klinger and new film history

    The crisis in film studies and history concerning their legitimacy and objectives has provoked a reinvigoration of scholarly energy in historical enquiry. 'New film history' attempts to address the concerns of historians and film scholars by working self-reflexively with an expanded range of sources and a wider conception of 'film' as a dynamic set of processes rather than a series of texts. The practice of new film history is here exemplified through a detailed case study of the independent British producer Michael Klinger (active 1961-87) with a specific focus on his unsuccessful attempt to produce a war film, Green Beach, based on a memoir of the Dieppe raid (August 1942). This case study demonstrates the importance of analysing the producer's role in understanding the complexities of film-making, the continual struggle to balance the competing demands of creativity and commerce. In addition, its subject matter - an undercover raid and a Jewish hero - disturbed the dominant myths concerning the Second World War, creating what turned out to be intractable ideological as well as financial problems. The paper concludes that the concerns of film historians need to engage with broader cultural and social histories. © 2010 Taylor & Francis
