Performing Identities in Scotland: Liz Lochhead’s Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off
[Abstract] It has been argued that Scottish culture has experienced a “Second Renaissance” in the last two decades, which has been identified with the works of Alasdair Gray, James Kelman, Jackie Kay, Janice Galloway or A. L. Kennedy. Liz Lochhead’s Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off is one of the most controversial texts of the period, because of its irreverent interrogation of Scotland’s past and its criticism of its present asymmetries. The aim of this paper is to analyse the subversive portrayal of Scottish tradition in the play, considering its emphasis on the performative nature of identities, as well as its examination of the transmission of values from one generation to another. Special attention will be given to the political side of the text and the strategies employed by the author to reflect on gender issues, England’s cultural colonialism over the nation or the resistance to accept difference in 1980’s Scotland. It will also be analysed how Lochhead manipulates the representation of Scotland’s past taking the last queen of Scotland as a symbol of the transformation undergone by all national signs, and the connections between the ideas expressed in the play and postmodern theories on nationalism
La negociación de la diferencia étnica en la literatura escocesa contemporánea
In the last three decades, Scottish writers have been engaged in the demarcation of a cultural and political detachment from English models. Since the 1970s, the works of Alasdair Gray, James Kelman or Liz Lochhead have been identified with a "second renaissance" of Scottish culture that reacted against the impositions of Britain's ideological centre, where Scottish voices were not represented. At the same time, some Scottish "ex-centric" voices were starting to become visible in the arts, revealing the complexities of their partial participation in the culture of Scotland. The aim of this paper is to analyse the negotiation of the Scottish national identity in the works of the Afro-Scottish writers Jackie Kay and Maud Sulter, focusing on their exploration of ethnic and sexual difference
The Rhythms of the City: The performance of Time and Space in Suhayl Saadi’s Psychoraag
This article concentrates on Suhayl Saadi’s novel Psychoraag, which is analysed in the light of urban space theory, paying special attention to Henri Lefebvre’s Rhythmanalysis. It contextualizes the text within the emergence of postcolonial writing in post-devolution Scotland. It focuses on the articulation of the consumption, production, and performance of the rhythms of the city by its protagonist, whose corporeal and metaphysical exploration of space and time will be alleged to mirror the analytical standpoint termed by Lefebvre as “rhythmanalyst”; namely, to represent a subject who enquires into the social, emotional, and biological rhythms of everyday life, as developed in his work. It will be argued that the novel in fact has two protagonists. One is Glasgow and its social body, which is clearly polyrhythmic, if experiencing constant states of arrhythmia. The other one is Zaf, a young Pakistani-Glaswegian, who challenges the normativity of Glasgow’s polyrhythms by intentionally creating individual, multi-layered states of disorder and interference. Lefebvre’s classification of rhythms into “secret”, “public”, and “dominating–dominated” will be used to revise the portrayal of personal and social exchanges: intergenerational relations, interethnic affection, and the negotiation of new masculinities in the framework of a deregularized environment.</jats:p
Political Elites in the Chilean legislative Branch: The Chamber of Deputies (1990-2014)
This article analyses the social composition of political elites in the Chilean legislative branch, specifically in the Chamber of Deputies between 1990 and 2015. The personal characteristics and re-election rates of deputies in that period (n = 720) are analysed. The degree of homogeneity in educational background for each legislature is complemented with interdependence models, specifically cluster analysis with a non-hierarchical grouping algorithm, as well as social network analysis. The findings suggest that the closer a legislative period is to the democratic transition, the more homogeneous/dense its social composition. Despite the confirmation of the sociocultural elitization of deputies, this does not imply, generally speaking, greater concentration of density in the post-transitional legislatures.
Orxata Sound System. Música glocal, libre, colectiva y cooperativa / Orxata Sound System. Glocal, free, collective and cooperative music
Orxata Sound System is a musical collective from l?Horta (Valencian Country) that was founded in 2003 and was dissolved indefinitely in 2014. Its existence has marked a before and after in the Catalan musical scene, not only because of its style, but also because it was a pioneer in the use of new technologies to create, produce and distribute its music as well as (auto) manage and communicate with the public in an eminently horizontal way. This article will observe the musical trajectory of Orxata Sound System with special emphasis, on the one hand, on the artistic exploitation that developed from the hybridization of two apparently contradictory elements; on the other hand, we will focus on the cooperative strategies in musical creativity. Keywords: collective culture, activism, catalan music, Cultural Studies, Valenci

Ganglion-specific splicing of TRPV1 underlies infrared sensation in vampire bats.
Vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) are obligate blood feeders that have evolved specialized systems to suit their sanguinary lifestyle. Chief among such adaptations is the ability to detect infrared radiation as a means of locating hotspots on warm-blooded prey. Among vertebrates, only vampire bats, boas, pythons and pit vipers are capable of detecting infrared radiation. In each case, infrared signals are detected by trigeminal nerve fibres that innervate specialized pit organs on the animal's face. Thus, vampire bats and snakes have taken thermosensation to the extreme by developing specialized systems for detecting infrared radiation. As such, these creatures provide a window into the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying evolutionary tuning of thermoreceptors in a species-specific or cell-type-specific manner. Previously, we have shown that snakes co-opt a non-heat-sensitive channel, vertebrate TRPA1 (transient receptor potential cation channel A1), to produce an infrared detector. Here we show that vampire bats tune a channel that is already heat-sensitive, TRPV1, by lowering its thermal activation threshold to about 30 °C. This is achieved through alternative splicing of TRPV1 transcripts to produce a channel with a truncated carboxy-terminal cytoplasmic domain. These splicing events occur exclusively in trigeminal ganglia, and not in dorsal root ganglia, thereby maintaining a role for TRPV1 as a detector of noxious heat in somatic afferents. This reflects a unique organization of the bat Trpv1 gene that we show to be characteristic of Laurasiatheria mammals (cows, dogs and moles), supporting a close phylogenetic relationship with bats. These findings reveal a novel molecular mechanism for physiological tuning of thermosensory nerve fibres
