Sectoral heterogeneity in patterns of educational mismatch in tourism: a gender comparison
The study of the effects of educational mismatch has shown this phenomenon to generate inefficiencies due to a misallocation of resources. These inefficiencies are more detrimental for countries such as Spain, where education is financed to a large extent with public funds, and low-skill demanding sectors, such as tourism, have a high weight in the economy. This paper aims to study the determinants of educational mismatch from a gender perspective, analysing the sectoral heterogeneity that may arise among these determinants in four key productive branches within the Spanish tourism sub-sector, i.e., hotels, transport, intermediary services and other complementary services. For this purpose, a multinomial logit model is employed, which will be estimated separately for each sector and gender of interest, using data from the 2018 Wage Structure Survey of the Spanish National Statistics Institute. Among the results obtained, it is highlighted, firstly, that educational mismatch is not a transitory phenomenon given that it occurs both at the beginning of the individual's working career and at very different levels of permanence. Secondly, it is interesting to note the greater probability of male overeducation observed in the hotel and catering industry and female overeducation in the rest of the services analysed, the latter result possibly reflecting the occupational gender segregation experienced by women in these branches of the economy.Universidad de Málaga. Programmable axial apodizing and hyperresolving amplitude filters with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator
Amplitude-transmitting filters for apodizing and hyperresolving applications can be easily implemented by use of a two-dimensional programmable liquid-crystal spatial light modulator operating in a transmission-only mode. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. This approach can permit the analysis of various filter designs and can allow the filters to be changed rapidly to modify the response of an optical system
Microstructure Evolution in a Fast and Ultrafast Sintered Non-Equiatomic Al/Cu HEA
One of the attractive characteristics of high entropy alloys (HEAs) is the ability to tailor their composition to obtain specific microstructures and properties by adjusting the stoichiometry to obtain a body-centered cubic (BCC) or face-centered cubic (FCC) structure. Thus, in this work, the target composition of an alloy of the FeCrCoNi family has been modified by adjusting the Al/Cu ratio in order to obtain a BCC crystalline structure. However, processing conditions always play a key role in the final microstructure and, therefore, in this work, the microstructure evolution of FeCrCoNiAl1.8Cu0.5 HEA sintered by different powder metallurgy (PM) techniques has been investigated. The techniques used range from the conventional PM sintering route, that uses high heating rates and sintering times, going through a fast sintering technique such as spark plasma sintering (SPS) to the novel and promising ultrafast sintering technique electrical resistance sintering (ERS). Results show that the increase in the processing time favours the separation of phases and the segregation of elements, which is reflected in a substantial change in the hardness of the alloy. In conclusion, the ERS technique is presented as a very promising consolidation technique for HEA.The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of MAT4.0-CM project funded by Madrid region under programme S2018/NMT-4381. Simulation-based mathematical learning for higher education students from heterogeneous backgrounds
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in "Journal of Simulation" on the 2nd of February, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/17477778.2024.2314716[EN] This paper explores the use of simulation-based training for mathematical learning in undergraduate and graduate mathematics, science, and engineering courses. Simulation-based training offers the advantages of active learning and inquiry-based learning techniques. Furthermore, it provides extensive flexibility, ranging from user-level usage of simulations to the modification or creation of new possibilities by the student, thus engaging different cognitive levels to achieve the learning objectives. This is particularly interesting in groups consisting of students from diverse backgrounds and levels, due to factors such as their international origin or varying prior education, especially in interdisciplinary Master's degree programmes. Additionally, in online or blended environments (which have become widespread during the last years), simulation-based learning has the advantage of granting students a certain degree of autonomy, which can, to some extent, compensate for the absence of the instructor's physical presence.Campos, N.; Corlu, CG.; Nogal, M.; Juan, AA.; Caliz, C. Bilateral laparoscopic synchronous adrenalectomy in bilateral pheochromocytoma: experience in 8 patients
Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloAim: To evaluate 8 cases of bilateral pheochromocytoma and laparoscopic synchronous treatment. Patients and Methods: From May 1999 to May 2010, 8 patients with bilateral pheochromocytoma were found. A complete preoperative workup was done. Results: We perform 8 transperitoneal laparoscopic bilateral synchronous adrenalectomy. There was no open converted procedure. Mean operative time was 184.37 min. (range 95 to 300 min). Mean hospital stay was 3.8 days (range 3 to 5 days). Mean blood loss was 191.25 ml (range 0 to 500 min). In 7 cases the histopathological result was of pheochromocytoma and 1 as a malignant pheochomocytoma based on its histology. Conclusions: With very well establish diagnostic disease, an appropriate anesthetic strategy and as surgical skills, laparoscopic bilateral synchronic adrenalectomy is a feasible and safe surgical technique for bilateral pheochromocytomas. No hubo conversión a cirugía abierta.
The effect of countries’ health and environmental conditions on restaurant reputation
Corporate reputation enhancement in the restaurant industry has recently been increasingly
driven by the central importance of consumer review websites and customers’ greater awareness
of sustainable practices regarding health and the environment. In this context, the research
question of the present study was if there is a relationship between health and environmental
conditions, and restaurants’ corporate reputation on a country level. Trying to answer this question,
the present study sought to analyze the e ects of countries’ health and environmental conditions on
their restaurants’ corporate reputation, thereby contributing to the existing knowledge about how
sustainable environments influence the industry’s competitiveness. The research design included
di erent methodological approaches, and was divided into three main phases: restaurant corporation
identification, reputation database design, and results. To this end, reputation data from a consumer
review website were gathered for a sample of restaurant corporations and establishments connected
to the European countries on the Healthiest Country Index. The methods were based on regression
analysis. The results indicate that restaurant reputation improves in healthy, sustainable environments,
specifically in countries ranked as the healthiest. These findings provide a better understanding of
how aspects related to health and environmental sustainability influence corporate reputation.FCT: UIDB/04020/2020;info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
