New Supergravity Backgrounds Dual to N=1 SQCD-like Theories with N_f=2N_c
We present new supergravity backgrounds generated by N_c D5-branes, wrapping
the S^2 of the resolved conifold, in the presence of N_f = 2 N_c smeared flavor
D5-branes. The smearing allows us to take their backreaction on the geometry
into account. We discuss the consistency, stability, and supersymmetry of these
types of setups. We find near horizon geometries that we expect to be
supergravity duals of SQCD-like theories with N_f= 2N_c. From these backgrounds
we numerically extract rectangular Wilson loops and beta functions of the dual
field theory for the regime where our approximations are valid.Comment: 22+24 pages, 17 figures, Figure 12 replace
The Non-SUSY Baryonic Branch: Soft Supersymmetry Breaking of N=1 Gauge Theories
We study a non-supersymmetric deformation of the field theory dual to the
baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. Using a combination of analytical
(series expansions) and numerical methods we construct non-supersymmetric
backgrounds that smoothly interpolate between the desired UV and IR behaviors.
We calculate various observables of the field theory and propose a picture of
soft breaking by gaugino masses that is consistent with the various

Spectroscopy of Na: shell evolution toward the drip line
Excited states in Na have been studied using the -decay of
implanted Ne ions at GANIL/LISE as well as the in-beam -ray
spectroscopy at the NSCL/S800 facility. New states of positive
(J=3,4) and negative (J=1-5) parity are proposed. The
former arise from the coupling between 0d protons and a 0d
neutron, while the latter are due to couplings with 1p or 0f
neutrons. While the relative energies between the J=1-4 states are
well reproduced with the USDA interaction in the N=17 isotones, a progressive
shift in the ground state binding energy (by about 500 keV) is observed between
F and Al. This points to a possible change in the proton-neutron
0d-0d effective interaction when moving from stability to the
drip line. The presence of J=1-4 negative parity states around 1.5
MeV as well as of a candidate for a J=5 state around 2.5 MeV give
further support to the collapse of the N=20 gap and to the inversion between
the 0f and 1p levels below Z=12. These features are discussed
in the framework of Shell Model and EDF calculations, leading to predicted
negative parity states in the low energy spectra of the F and O

The Structure of the Non-SUSY Baryonic Branch of Klebanov-Strassler
We study the two-dimensional space of supergravity solutions corresponding to
non-supersymmetric deformations of the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler.
By combining analytical methods with a numerical survey of the parameter space,
we find that this solution space includes as limits the softly-broken N=1
solutions of Gubser et al. and those of Dymarsky and Kuperstein. We also
identify a one-dimensional family of solutions corresponding to a natural
non-supersymmetric generalisation of Klebanov-Strassler, and one corresponding
to the limit in which supersymmetry is completely absent, even in the far UV.
For almost all of the parameter space we find indications that much of the
structure of the supersymmetric baryonic branch survives.Comment: 29 pages plus appendices, 11 figure
The effects of spatial resolution on Integral Field Spectrograph surveys at different redshifts. The CALIFA perspective
Over the past decade, 3D optical spectroscopy has become the preferred tool
for understanding the properties of galaxies and is now increasingly used to
carry out galaxy surveys. Low redshift surveys include SAURON, DiskMass,
ATLAS3D, PINGS and VENGA. At redshifts above 0.7, surveys such as MASSIV, SINS,
GLACE, and IMAGES have targeted the most luminous galaxies to study mainly
their kinematic properties. The on-going CALIFA survey () is the
first of a series of upcoming Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) surveys with
large samples representative of the entire population of galaxies. Others
include SAMI and MaNGA at lower redshift and the upcoming KMOS surveys at
higher redshift. Given the importance of spatial scales in IFS surveys, the
study of the effects of spatial resolution on the recovered parameters becomes
important. We explore the capability of the CALIFA survey and a hypothetical
higher redshift survey to reproduce the properties of a sample of objects
observed with better spatial resolution at lower redshift. Using a sample of
PINGS galaxies, we simulate observations at different redshifts. We then study
the behaviour of different parameters as the spatial resolution degrades with

We study the effects of the temperature and of a magnetic field in the setup
of an intersection of D3/D7 branes, where a large number of D7 branes is
smeared in the transverse directions to allow for a perturbative solution in a
backreaction parameter. The magnetic field sources an anisotropy in the plasma,
and we investigate its physical consequences for the thermodynamics and energy
loss of particles probing the system. In particular we comment on the
stress-energy tensor of the plasma, the propagation of sound in the directions
parallel and orthogonal to the magnetic field, the drag force of a quark moving

Spectroscopy of Na: Bridging the two-proton radioactivity of Mg
The unbound nucleus Na, the intermediate nucleus in the two-proton
radioactivity of Mg, was studied by the measurement of the resonant
elastic scattering reaction Ne(p,Ne)p performed at 4 A.MeV.
Spectroscopic properties of the low-lying states were obtained in a R-matrix
analysis of the excitation function. Using these new results, we show that the
lifetime of the Mg radioactivity can be understood assuming a sequential
emission of two protons via low energy tails of Na resonances
Measurement of Total and Differential Cross Sections of Neutrino and Antineutrino Coherent Production on Carbon
Neutrino induced coherent charged pion production on nuclei,
, is a rare inelastic interaction in
which the four-momentum squared transfered to the nucleus is nearly zero,
leaving it intact. We identify such events in the scintillator of MINERvA by
reconstructing |t| from the final state pion and muon momenta and by removing
events with evidence of energetic nuclear recoil or production of other final
state particles. We measure the total neutrino and antineutrino cross sections
as a function of neutrino energy between 2 and 20 GeV and measure flux
integrated differential cross sections as a function of , and
. The dependence and equality of the neutrino and
anti-neutrino cross-sections at finite provide a confirmation of Adler's
PCAC hypothesis
Core-coupled states and split proton-neutron quasi-particle multiplets in 122-126Ag
Neutron-rich silver isotopes were populated in the fragmentation of a 136Xe
beam and the relativistic fission of 238U. The fragments were mass analyzed
with the GSI Fragment separator and subsequently implanted into a passive
stopper. Isomeric transitions were detected by 105 HPGe detectors. Eight
isomeric states were observed in 122-126Ag nuclei. The level schemes of
122,123,125Ag were revised and extended with isomeric transitions being
observed for the first time. The excited states in the odd-mass silver isotopes
are interpreted as core-coupled states. The isomeric states in the even-mass
silver isotopes are discussed in the framework of the proton-neutron split
multiplets. The results of shell-model calculations, performed for the most
neutron-rich silver nuclei are compared to the experimental data
