    Studies on cambial activity: advances and challenges in the knowledge of growth dynamics of Brazilian woody species

    The lack of specific research on the sequence of events that determine plant growth from meristem until wood formation represents a gap in the knowledge of growth dynamics in woody species. In this work, we surveyed published studies concerning cambial activity of Brazilian native species aiming at allowing the comparison of applied methods and obtained results. The annual cambial seasonality was observed in all the investigated species. Nevertheless, we found high heterogeneity in the used methodologies. As a result from this analysis, our opinion points to the need for standardizing sampling protocols and for discussing the suitability of experimental designs.     Digital social entrepreneurship: the n-helix response to stakeholders’ covid-19 needs

    This study explores the emergence of a new entrepreneurship phenomenon (digital social entrepreneurship) as a result of the collaboration among many agents (N-Helix), given the government’s limited capacity to respond to the stakeholders’ needs satisfaction related to an exogenous event (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic). Our theory development is based on three ongoing academic debates related to (a) the unrepresentativeness of the stakeholder theory in entrepreneurship research; (b) the emergence of digital social entrepreneurship (DSE) as a bridge between stakeholders’ needs, socio-economic actors, and digital-social initiatives; and (c) the role of N-Helix collaborations to facilitate the emergence of global knowledge-intensive initiatives and the rapid adoptions of open innovations. Our results support our assumptions about the positive mediation effect of DSE in the relationship between N-Helix collaborations and stakeholders’ satisfaction. Notably, results show how pandemic has intensified these relationships and how DSE in N-Helix collaborations can generate social impacts globally. Some implications for policy-makers have emerged from our results that should be considered during/post-COVID-19 pandemic

    White matter abnormalities in the fornix are linked to cognitive performance in SZ but not in BD disorder: An exploratory analysis with DTI deterministic tractography

    Background In psychosis, white matter (WM) microstructural changes have been detected previously; however, direct comparisons of findings between bipolar (BD) and schizophrenia (SZ) patients are scarce. In this study, we employed deterministic tractography to reconstruct WM tracts in BD and SZ patients. Methods Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data was carried out with n=32 euthymic BD type I patients, n=26 SZ patients and 30 matched healthy controls. Deterministic tractography using multiple indices of diffusion (fractional anisotropy (FA), tract volume (Vol), tract length (Le) and number of tracts (NofT)) were obtained from the fornix, the cingulum, the anterior thalamic radiation, and the corpus callosum bilaterally. Results We showed widespread WM microstructural changes in SZ, and changes in the corpus callosum, the left cingulum and the fornix in BD. Fornix fiber tracking scores were associated with cognitive performance in SZ, and with age and age at disease onset in the BD patient group. Limitations Although the influence of psychopharmacological drugs as biasing variables on morphological alterations has been discussed for SZ and BD, we did not observe a clear influence of drug exposure on our findings. Conclusions These results confirm the assumption that SZ patients have more severe WM changes than BD patients. The findings also suggest a major role of WM changes in the fornix as important fronto-limbic connections in the etiology of cognitive symptoms in SZ, but not in B

    A hipertensão arterial (HTA) é uma situação clínica importante com uma enorme repercussão na saúde pública. Apesar da aceitação do papel dos factores psico- -sociais, permanece controverso o seu papel etiopatogénico. O objectivo do presente estudo foi investigar as possíveis relações entre o perfil psicológico (através da Prova de Rorschach) de 41 doentes com HTA, a adesão terapêutica e o grau de atingimento dos orgãos- -alvo. Após a apresentação e discussão dos resultados são abordados aspectos da metodologia de investigação e as possíveis implicações do estudo do perfil psicológico dos doentes com HTA.Hypertension is a critical issue of public health. Despite the agreement about the involvement of psychosocial factors there is still controversy about their etiopathogenic role. The aim of the present study was to investigate possible relations between the psychological profile of 41 hypertensive patients, assessed by the Rorschach’ projective technique, the leve1 of patient’ compliance and the degree of severity of hypertension. Results are presented and discussed, as well as the methodological problems of assessment strategies.     74 Ge(n, ¿) cross section below 70 keV measured at n_TOF CERN

    Measurement of the Ge 70 (n,γ) cross section up to 300 keV at the CERN n-TOF facility

    ©2019 American Physical Society.Neutron capture data on intermediate mass nuclei are of key importance to nucleosynthesis in the weak component of the slow neutron capture processes, which occurs in massive stars. The (n,γ) cross section on Ge70, which is mainly produced in the s process, was measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n-TOF at CERN. Resonance capture kernels were determined up to 40 keV neutron energy and average cross sections up to 300 keV. Stellar cross sections were calculated from kT=5 keV to kT=100 keV and are in very good agreement with a previous measurement by Walter and Beer (1985) and recent evaluations. Average cross sections are in agreement with Walter and Beer (1985) over most of the neutron energy range covered, while they are systematically smaller for neutron energies above 150 keV. We have calculated isotopic abundances produced in s-process environments in a 25 solar mass star for two initial metallicities (below solar and close to solar). While the low metallicity model reproduces best the solar system germanium isotopic abundances, the close to solar model shows a good global match to solar system abundances in the range of mass numbers A=60-80.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Ensinando Química através da abordagem CTSA: uma proposta para o tema Drogas

    Este trabalho relata a experiência didática dos bolsistas do Programa Institucional de Bolsas de Iniciação à Docência (CAPES-PIBID) da UFRJ, que foi desenvolvido para alunos do 3º Ano do Ensino Médio, com carga horária de 2 tempos semanais (100 minutos) e apresentado à comunidade escolar. O tema central, selecionado pelos alunos da escola conveniada, foi Drogas. Este tema foi dividido em quatro tópicos: medicamentos, entorpecentes, bebidas alcóolicas e talidomida. Para cada tópico um bolsista CAPES-PIBID atuou como responsável, abordando diversos conceitos químicos como funções orgânicas e nomenclatura, isomeria, forças intermoleculares, algumas interações entre fármacos, teor alcóolico, etc. Os alunos da escola conveniada, sob orientação dos bolsistas CAPES-PIBID, elaboraram apresentações sobre os temas trabalhados, envolvendo exposições orais sobre o tópico em questão, além da elaboração de um jogo didático de tabuleiro abordando o tema talidomida, uma peça teatral abordando a automedicação e as interações medicamentosas e, também, a apresentação de alguns experimentos como destilação simples
