    Helping Struggling Students Develop Skills for Academic Success: An Academic Library and Student Services Collaboration

    In the fall of 2018, two Touro University California (TUC) librarians began a collaboration with Academic Support Services to teach a library session in their 1-unit Pathways course offered each semester. This course is designed to help students develop skills for academic success, including time and stress management, professional communication, and study strategies. All students are welcome to enroll, but most Pathways students are identified by their program as needing additional support and referred to the course.     International audienceDuring the last decades modelling and simulation technics has grown in importance in the product development context. For example, from an industrial point of view, simulation models seem to be an excellent alternative on vehicle construction and more specifically, in the decision making process. Nevertheless, the simulation activity becomes more difficult with the complexity of the product, highlighting more and more often a collaborative problem on the organization of the product development. But, how can this problem be defined? Several collaborative approaches have been proposed in this field. However, the majority of those approaches concern only one dimension of the problem.     This reflective paper focuses its interests on the consideration of diversity in the classroom as one of the inherent characteristics, where it is essential that despite the approach to disabilities or other particularities, the development of variables that favor the educational process is prioritized. Starting from the analysis of conceptions of authors such as Núñez, Quijano, Zompero, Monje and Shernoff, among others; The importance of taking into account the competences and the school commitment is highlighted, as two of the transcendent elements in the education that takes place in the diverse classroom and that must attend to all the dimensions of the human being. The article aims to mobilize the reader towards a more holistic vision of diversity in education, leaving aside its reductionist perspective and motivating towards the deployment of strategies that optimize the student's training process and that consider both school commitment and to the competences that transcend the cognitive, as fundamental in this.El presente escrito reflexivo centra sus intereses en la consideración de la diversidad en el aula como una de las características inherentes, en donde resulta fundamental que pese al abordaje de discapacidades o de otras particularidades, se priorice el desarrollo de variables favorecedoras del proceso educativo.  Partiendo del análisis de concepciones de autores como Núñez, Quijano, Zompero, Monje y Shernoff, entre otros; se resalta la importancia de tener en cuenta a las competencias y al compromiso escolar, como dos de los elementos trascendentes en la educación que tiene lugar en el aula diversa y que debe atender a todas las dimensiones del ser humano.     The relationship between human figure drawing and visual-motor coordination in 6-year-old preterm children

    The objective of this study was to examine the performance of preschool age children born prematurely in perceptual and visomotor tests. As prematurity has an impact on child's development it is important to evaluate the percepto-motor skills in this population. The participants of this study were 30 children, 20 girls and 10 boys, born with gestational age >; 34 weeks, recruited in a developmental follow-up program for preterm infants. The children were assessed with the Motor Accuracy test (AYRES, 1980), the Bender Gestalt (KOPPITZ, 1989) and the versions of the human figure drawing by Wechsler (1996) and by Ayres and Reid (1966). The results showed that the preterm children had age appropriated performance in all tests but the motor accuracy adjusted for time, which indicates that children born pre-term present are slower in tracing. There was a significant correlation between the two versions of the human figure drawing (Pearson r = 0,76) and between birth weight and motor accuracy (Pearson r = 0,36 e 0,41), moreover, none of the other correlations between the test were significant. These results are in contrast with the literature, which indicates that preterm children present lower performance in perceptual and motor tests. The poor correlation among the scores of the different tests and the signs of poor clinical utility lead to doubts regarding the validity of the instruments utilized in the study. It was concluded that there is a need to develop instruments with current norms for the Brazilian children, that will allow for more accuracy in test results.O presente estudo teve como objetivo examinar o desempenho, na idade pré-escolar, de crianças nascidas prematuras em testes perceptuais e visomotores. Como a prematuridade tem impacto no desenvolvimento infantil, é importante avaliar as habilidades percepto-motoras nessa população. Participaram desse estudo 30 crianças, 20 meninas e 10 meninos, com idade gestacional, ao nascimento, >; 34 semanas, recrutados em programa de acompanhamento do desenvolvimento de prematuros. Os instrumentos utilizados para avaliação da amostragem foram os testes de Acuidade Motora (AYRES, 1980), Gestáltico de Bender (KOPPITZ, 1989) e as versões do desenho da Figura humana de Wechsler (1996) e Ayres e Reid (1966). Os resultados mostraram que as crianças pré-termo tiveram desempenho dentro do esperado para a idade, em todos os testes, exceto na acuidade motora ajustada para tempo, o que indica que as crianças nascidas pré-termo apresentaram maior lentidão no traçado. Foi encontrada correlação significativa entre as duas versões do Desenho da Figura Humana (Pearson r = 0,76) e entre o peso ao nascimento e a acuidade do traçado (Pearson r = 0,36 e 0,41), porém nenhuma outra correlação entre os testes utilizados atingiu significância. Tais resultados contrastam com a literatura, que indica pior desempenho perceptual e motor em crianças nascidas prematuramente. A pobre correlação entre os escores dos diferentes testes e os sinais de pouca utilidade clínica levam a questionar a validade da instrumentação utilizada. Conclui-se que é essencial o desenvolvimento de instrumentação própria, com normas atualizadas, para crianças brasileiras, que permita maior acuidade dos resultados

    This collaboration amongst Touro College and University System (TCUS) libraries began as an initiative of the College Research Council to increase TCUS\u27s research footprint. Specifically, faculty and students needed to develop greater research knowledge and skills. The Library Advisory Committee, one of four subcommittees of the Research Council, recognized the wealth of research taught across the system by individual libraries, and saw this as an opportunity for collaboration

    Estrategias de fortalecimiento de la seguridad y soberanía alimentaria en medio del covid-19 en Colombia

    In the midst of the health emergency caused by COVID-19 in Colombia, strategies have been generated to strengthen food security and sovereignty. Among the mechanisms adopted by urban and rural communities and local governments are alternative ways of obtaining food, one of which is trueque, which allows the exchange of food produced by peasants between territories. In Bogota, mercados campesinos have been strengthened, which have made it possible to bring food produced by peasants in Tolima, Meta and Boyacá to urban households, promoting short marketing circuits and fair payment to producers. In spite of these alternatives, the demonstrations to make visible the hunger of the households emerged the trapos rojos (red rags) in the houses, which have alerted about the situation of a good part of Colombians and have encouraged solidarity among neighbors. The position of academia has been avant-garde, directly involving peasants in processes to guarantee the right to food in Colombia.En medio de la emergencia sanitaria producida por la COVID-19 en Colombia se han generado estrategias para el fortalecimiento de la seguridad y soberanía alimentaria. Dentro de los mecanismos adoptados por las comunidades urbanas y rurales y los gobiernos locales se encuentran formas alternativas en la obtención de alimentos, una de ellas es el trueque, el cual permite intercambiar alimentos producidos por las y los campesinos entre territorios. En Bogotá se han estado fortaleciendo los mercados campesinos, los que han permitido llevar a los hogares urbanos alimentos producidos por las y los campesinos en Tolima, Meta y Boyacá fomentando los circuitos cortos de comercialización y el pago justo a los productores. A pesar de estas alternativas, las manifestaciones para visibilizar el hambre de los hogares surgieron como trapos rojos en las puertas y ventanas de las casas, los que han alertado sobre la situación de buena parte de colombianos y han alentado la solidaridad entre vecinos. La posición de la academia ha sido vanguardista vinculando de manera directa a las y los campesinos en procesos por la garantía del derecho a la alimentación en Colombia
