The patent ductus arteriosus with left to right flow is one of the most frequent congenital heart diseases in the dog, but with a surgical treatment that produces a total recovery. In the present work, a clinical case of this kind is described, alone with a review of the physiopathology that causes the failure in the closing of the duct and the diagnostic methods to confirrn its existence, together with the surgery and possible complications that may arise
Occurrence of testicular microlithiasis in androgen insensitive hypogonadal mice
Background: Testicular microliths are calcifications found within the seminiferous tubules. In humans, testicular microlithiasis (TM) has an unknown etiology but may be significantly associated with testicular germ cell tumors. Factors inducing microlith development may also, therefore, act as susceptibility factors for malignant testicular conditions. Studies to identify the mechanisms of microlith development have been hampered by the lack of suitable animal models for TM.
Methods: This was an observational study of the testicular phenotype of different mouse models. The mouse models were: cryptorchid mice, mice lacking androgen receptors (ARs) on the Sertoli cells (SCARKO), mice with a ubiquitous loss of androgen ARs (ARKO), hypogonadal (hpg) mice which lack circulating gonadotrophins, and hpg mice crossed with SCARKO (hpg.SCARKO) and ARKO (hpg.ARKO) mice.
Results: Microscopic TM was seen in 94% of hpg.ARKO mice (n=16) and the mean number of microliths per testis was 81 +/- 54. Occasional small microliths were seen in 36% (n=11) of hpg testes (mean 2 +/- 0.5 per testis) and 30% (n=10) of hpg.SCARKO testes (mean 8 +/- 6 per testis). No microliths were seen in cryptorchid, ARKO or SCARKO mice. There was no significant effect of FSH or androgen on TM in hpg.ARKO mice.
Conclusions: We have identified a mouse model of TM and show that lack of endocrine stimulation is a cause of TM. Importantly, this model will provide a means with which to identify the mechanisms of TM development and the underlying changes in protein and gene expression
Targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis Biotin Protein Ligase (MtBPL) with Nucleoside-Based Bisubstrate Adenylation Inhibitors
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), responsible for both latent and symptomatic tuberculosis (TB), remains the second leading cause of mortality among infectious diseases worldwide. Mycobacterial biotin protein ligase (MtBPL) is an essential enzyme in Mtb and regulates lipid metabolism through the post-translational biotinylation of acyl coenzyme A carboxylases. We report the synthesis and evaluation of a systematic series of potent nucleoside-based inhibitors of MtBPL that contain modifications to the ribofuranosyl ring of the nucleoside. All compounds were characterized by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and shown to bind potently with KDs †2 nM. Additionally, we obtained high-resolution cocrystal structures for a majority of the compounds. Despite fairly uniform biochemical potency, the whole-cell Mtb activity varied greatly with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranging from 0.78 to >100 ÎŒM. Cellular accumulation studies showed a nearly 10-fold enhancement in accumulation of a C-2'-α analogue over the corresponding C-2'-ÎČ analogue, consistent with their differential whole-cell activity
A Vector Non-abelian Chern-Simons Duality
Abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory is known to possess a `-self-dual'
action where its coupling constant is inverted {\it i.e.} . Here a vector non-abelian duality is found in the
pure non-abelian Chern-Simons action at the classical level. The dimensional
reduction of the dual Chern-Simons action to two-dimensions constitutes a dual
Wess-Zumino-Witten action already given in the literature.Comment: 14+1 pages, LaTeX file, no figures, version to appear in Phys. Rev

Further studies on the iodine concentration of conventional, organic and UHT semi-skimmed milk at retail in the UK
Milk is the largest source of iodine in UK diets and earlier studies showed organic summer and winter
milk to be significantly lower in iodine than conventional milk. One study also showed UHT milk to have
lower iodine concentration. The study on winter and UHT milk was small and accordingly a new study is
reported here involving conventional, organic and UHT semi-skimmed milk from four supermarkets over
a six-month period in summer and winter in two regions of the UK. The results showed organic milk to be
44% lower in iodine than conventional milk (427 vs. 241 mg/L, P < 0.001) and UHT milk was 27% lower in
iodine than conventional milk (427 vs. 314 mg/L, P < 0.001) although the differences tended to be less in
the summer. The results indicate that replacement of conventional milk by organic or UHT milk will
increase the risk of sub-optimal iodine status especially for pregnant/lactating women

Nanoinformatics: developing new computing applications for nanomedicine
Nanoinformatics has recently emerged to address the need of computing applications at the nano level. In this regard, the authors have participated in various initiatives to identify its concepts, foundations and challenges. While nanomaterials open up the possibility for developing new devices in many industrial and scientific areas, they also offer breakthrough perspectives for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In this paper, we analyze the different aspects of nanoinformatics and suggest five research topics to help catalyze new research and development in the area, particularly focused on nanomedicine. We also encompass the use of informatics to further the biological and clinical applications of basic research in nanoscience and nanotechnology, and the related concept of an extended ?nanotype? to coalesce information related to nanoparticles. We suggest how nanoinformatics could accelerate developments in nanomedicine, similarly to what happened with the Human Genome and other -omics projects, on issues like exchanging modeling and simulation methods and tools, linking toxicity information to clinical and personal databases or developing new approaches for scientific ontologies, among many others
Cosmological anti-deSitter space-times and time-dependent AdS/CFT correspondence
We study classes of five-dimensional cosmological solutions with negative
curvature, which are obtained from static solutions by an exchange of a spatial
and temporal coordinate, and in some cases by an analytic continuation. Such
solutions provide a suitable laboratory to address the time-dependent AdS/CFT
correspondence. For a specific example we address in detail the calculation of
the boundary stress-energy and the Wilson line and find disagreement with the
standard AdS/CFT correspondence. We trace these discrepancies to the
time-dependent effects, such as particle creation, which we further study for
specific backgrounds. We also identify specific time-dependent backgrounds that
reproduce the correct conformal anomaly. For such backgrounds the calculation
of the Wilson line in the adiabatic approximation indicates only a Coulomb
repulsion.Comment: LaTeX file, 47 pages, discussion is extended, version to appear in

Clustering patterns of physical activity, sedentary and dietary behavior among European adolescents: The HELENA study

Abstract

Background

Evidence suggests possible synergetic effects of multiple lifestyle behaviors on health risks like obesity and other health outcomes. A better insight in the clustering of those behaviors, could help to identify groups who are at risk in developing chronic diseases. This study examines the prevalence and clustering of physical activity, sedentary and dietary patterns among European adolescents and investigates if the identified clusters could be characterized by socio-demographic factors.

Methods

The study comprised a total of 2084 adolescents (45.6% male), from eight European cities participating in the HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) study. Physical activity and sedentary behavior were measured using self-reported questionnaires and diet quality was assessed based on dietary recall. Based on the results of those three indices, cluster analyses were performed. To identify gender differences and associations with socio-demographic variables, chi-square tests were executed.

Results

Five stable and meaningful clusters were found. Only 18% of the adolescents showed healthy and 21% unhealthy scores on all three included indices. Males were highly presented in the cluster with high levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and low quality diets. The clusters with low levels of MVPA and high quality diets comprised more female adolescents. Adolescents with low educated parents had diets of lower quality and spent more time in sedentary activities. In addition, the clusters with high levels of MVPA comprised more adolescents of the younger age category.

Conclusion

In order to develop effective primary prevention strategies, it would be important to consider multiple health indices when identifying high risk groups.</p
Deconstructive discourse analysis: extending the methodological conversation
Discourse analysis is increasingly becoming a methodology of preference amongst qualitative researchers. There is a danger, however, of it being viewed as a bounded and uncontested domain of research practice. As discourse analysis is inextricably linked with theoretical issues, it is a dynamic practice that is constantly in a process of revision. In this paper I reflect on some of the conceptualisations undergirding the notion of discourse â conceptualisations that have important implications in terms of how the practice of discourse analysis proceeds. I highlight some of the dualisms that may plague discourse analysis, and offer some solutions to these. Finally, I outline the deconstructive discourse analysis that I utilised in my doctoral work. The purpose of the latter is not to provide a recipe of methodology, but to illustrate how elements of various theoristsâ work (in this case Foucault, Derrida and Parker) may be profitably drawn together to perform specific discourse analytic work.Rhodes Universit
