Characterising the friction coefficient between rubber O-rings and a rigid surface under extreme pressures
Previous research into the friction behaviour of elastomers has typically focused on the effects of velocity, contact pressure, counter surface and lubrication on the coefficient of friction. O-ring type elastomer seals are common in many different industries. Friction plays a critical role during the setting and in service of these components. An experimental O-ring friction testing rig has been developed that can measure the effects of sliding speed and hydrostatic pressure on elastomer friction. Finite element analysis (FEA) packages can adopt fixed friction coefficients or ones that are pressure dependent. For the latter case, the dependence of the frictional behaviour is typically obtained from the instantaneous stress response at any given pressure and then related to the normal force response. The friction rig described in this paper uses industry standard dimensions for the O-ring gland, the pre-compression levels, extrusion gap size and pressure rating. The coefficient of friction is derived by dividing the measured friction force by the normal force, which was determined using an FEA modelling approach, as it could not be measured directly. Finally, a relationship between the frictional velocity and surface roughness is obtained in order to provide a frequency dependent Coefficient of Friction (CoF) that is easily translatable between surfaces
Pleistocene till provenance in east Yorkshire:Reconstructing ice flow of the British North Sea Lobe
The ice flow path and dynamic behaviour of the British-Irish Ice Sheet has been subject to renewed interest and controversy in recent years. Early studies in eastern England argued for interaction with Fennoscandian ice onshore in Britain, instigating re-examination of the sedimentology and provenance of many Pleistocene till successions. These studies instead supported an exclusively British provenance, and are used to predict southward advance of a broadly coast-parallel North Sea Lobe. Quantitative lithological and palynological analysis of the Pleistocene till succession in Holderness, East Yorkshire, however, remains to be carried out. We examined the lithologically diverse Skipsea Till in order to reconstruct ice flow pathways to the Holderness coast during the Pleistocene, thereby constraining which areas of substrate were subglacially eroded and entrained prior to deposition. The till yields a diverse range of soft, low-durability and uniquely British allochthonous material, including Permian Magnesian Limestone, Carboniferous limestone and coal, and Carboniferous pollen and spore assemblages that would be unlikely to survive polyphase reworking. Ice extended southwards through southern Scotland, incorporating material in north-east England, north-east Yorkshire and the western margin of the North Sea Basin (NSB), supporting a recurrent ice flow pathway for the eastern margin of the British-Irish Ice Sheet during the Mid to Late Pleistocene
Electrical breakdown of an acrylic dielectric elastomer: Effects of hemispherical probing electrodes size and force

Dielectric elastomers are widely investigated as soft electromechanically active polymers (EAPs) for actuators, stretch/force sensors, and mechanical energy harvesters to generate electricity. Although the performance of such devices is limited by the dielectric strength of the constitutive material, the electrical breakdown of soft elastomers for electromechanical transduction is still scarcely studied. Here, we describe a custom-made setup to measure electrical breakdown of soft EAPs, and we present data for a widely studied acrylic elastomer (VHB 4905 from 3M). The elastomer was electrically stimulated via a planar and a hemispherical metal electrode. The breakdown was characterized under different conditions to investigate the effects of the radius of curvature and applied force of the hemispherical electrode. With a given radius of curvature, the breakdown field increased by about 50% for a nearly 10-fold increase of the applied mechanical stress, while with a given mechanical stress the breakdown field increased by about 20% for an approximately twofold increase of the radius of curvature. These results indicate that the breakdown field is highly dependent on the boundary conditions, suggesting the need for reporting breakdown data always in close association with the measurement conditions. These findings might help future investigations in elucidating the ultimate breakdown mechanism/s of soft elastomers
Thermomechanical Characterization of Carbon Black Reinforced Rubbers During Rapid Adiabatic Straining
The thermo-mechanical properties of carbon black reinforced natural and styrene butadiene rubbers are investigated under rapid adiabatic conditions. Eleven carbon black grades with varying surface area and structure properties at 40 parts per hundred (phr) loading are studied and the unreinforced equivalents are included for reference. The results show a strong correlation of the modulus, mechanical hysteresis, temperature rise and calculated crystallinity of the rubbers measured in tensile extension with strain amplification factors. This highlights the influence of matrix overstraining on microstructural deformations of the rubber upon extension. The strain amplification factors are calculated via the Guth-Gold equation directly from carbon black type and loading, allowing a correlation of the fundamental morphological properties of carbon black with thermal and mechanical properties of rubbers upon extension. Analysis of the thermal measurements of the rubber compounds upon extension and retraction and contrasting between crystallizing and non-crystallizing rubbers reveals that a substantial irreversible heat generation is present upon extension of the rubber compounds. These irreversible effects most likely originate from microstructural damage mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the Mullins Effect in particle reinforced rubbers
Radio and IR study of the massive star-forming region IRAS 16353-4636
Context. With the latest infrared surveys, the number of massive protostellar
candidates has increased significantly. New studies have posed additional
questions on important issues about the formation, evolution, and other
phenomena related to them. Complementary to infrared data, radio observations
are a good tool to study the nature of these objects, and to diagnose the
formation stage. Aims. Here we study the far-infrared source IRAS 16353-4636
with the aim of understanding its nature and origin. In particular, we search
for young stellar objects (YSOs), possible outflow structure, and the presence
of non-thermal emission. Methods. Using high-resolution, multi-wavelength radio
continuum data obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we image
IRAS 16353-4636 and its environment from 1.4 to 19.6 GHz, and derive the
distribution of the spectral index at maximum angular resolution. We also
present new JHKs photometry and spectroscopy data obtained at ESO NTT. 13 CO
and archival HI line data, and infrared databases (MSX, GLIMPSE, MIPSGal) are
also inspected. Results. The radio continuum emission associated with IRAS
16353-4636 was found to be extended (~10 arcsec), with a bow-shaped morphology
above 4.8 GHz, and a strong peak persistent at all frequencies. The NIR
photometry led us to identify ten near-IR sources and classify them according
to their color. We used the HI line data to derive the source distance, and
analyzed the kinematical information from the CO and NIR lines detected.
Conclusions. We have identified the source IRAS 16353-4636 as a new
protostellar cluster. In this cluster we recognized three distinct sources: a
low-mass YSO, a high-mass YSOs, and a mildly confined region of intense and
non-thermal radio emission. We propose the latter corresponds to the terminal

The RMS Survey: 6 cm continuum VLA observations towards candidate massive YSOs in the northern hemisphere
(Abridged) Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey is an ongoing
multi-wavelength observational programme designed to return a large,
well-selected sample of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). We have
identified 2000 MYSO candidates located throughout the Galaxy by
comparing the colours of MSX and 2MASS point sources to those of known MYSOs.
Aims: To identify the populations of UCHII regions and PNe within the sample
and examine their Galactic distribution. Method: We have conducted high
resolution radio continuum observations at 6 cm towards 659 MYSO candidates in
the northern hemisphere (10\degr< l < 250\degr) using the VLA. In addition to
these targeted observations we present archival data towards a further 315 RMS
sources extracted from a previous VLA survey of the inner Galaxy. Results: We
find radio emission towards 272 (27% of the observed sample). Using
results from other parts of our multi-wavelength survey we separate these
RMS-radio associations into two distinct types of objects, classifying 51 as
PNe and a further 208 as either compact or UC HII regions. Using this well
selected sample of HII regions we estimate their Galactic scale height to be
0.6\degr. Conclusions: Using radio continuum and archival data we have
identified 79 PNe and 391 HII regions within the northern RMS catalogue. We
estimate the total fraction of contamination by PNe in the RMS sample is of
order 10%. The sample of HII regions is probably the best representation to

Financial phantasmagoria: corporate image-work in times of crisis
Our purpose in this article is to relate the real movements in the economy during 2008 to the ?image-work? of financial institutions. Over the period January?December 2008 we collected 241 separate advertisements from 61 financial institutions published in the Financial Times. Reading across the ensemble of advertisements for themes and evocative images provides an impression of the financial imaginaries created by these organizations as the global financial crisis unfolded. In using the term ?phantasmagoria? we move beyond its colloquial sense of a set of strange images designed to dazzle towards the more technical connotation used by Ranci�re (2004) who suggested that words and images can offer a trace of an overall determining set-up if they are torn from their obviousness so they become phantasmagoric figures. The key phantasmagoric figure we identify here is that of the financial institution as timeless, immortal and unchanging; a coherent and autonomous entity amongst other actors. This notion of uniqueness belies the commonality of thinking which precipitated the global financial crisis as well as the limited capacity for control of financial institutions in relation to market events. It also functions as a powerful naturalizing force, making it hard to question certain aspects of the recent period of ?capitalism in crisis?
New Perspectives on Glacial Geomorphology in Earth's Deep Time Record
International audienceThe deep time (pre-Quaternary) glacial record is an important means to understand the growth, development, and recession of the global cryosphere on very long timescales (10 6-10 8 Myr). Sedimentological description and interpretation of outcrops has traditionally played an important role. Whilst such data remain vital, new insights are now possible thanks to freely accessible aerial and satellite imagery, the widespread availability and affordability of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles, and accessibility to 3D rendering software. In this paper, we showcase examples of glaciated landscapes from the Cryogenian, Ediacaran, Late Ordovician and Late Carboniferous where this approach is revolutionizing our understanding of deep time glaciation. Although some problems cannot be overcome (erosion or dissolution of the evidence), robust interpretations in terms of the evolving subglacial environment can be made. Citing examples from Australia (Cryogenian), China (Ediacaran), North and South Africa (Late Ordovician, Late Carboniferous), and Namibia (Late Carboniferous), we illustrate how the power of glacial geomorphology can be harnessed to interpret Earth's ancient glacial record
The RMS Survey: Resolving kinematic distance ambiguities towards a sample of compact HII regions using HI absorption
We present high-resolution HI data obtained using the Australia Telescope
Compact Array to resolve the near/far distance ambiguities towards a sample of
compact HII regions from the Red MSX Source (RMS) survey. The high resolution
data are complemented with lower resolution archival HI data extracted from the
Southern and VLA Galactic Plane surveys. We resolve the distance ambiguity for
nearly all of the 105 sources where the continuum was strong enough to allow
analysis of the HI absorption line structure. This represents another step in
the determination of distances to the total RMS sample, which with over 1,000
massive young stellar objects and compact HII regions, is the largest and most
complete sample of its kind. The full sample will allow the distribution of
