    Growth and Magnetooptical Properties of Anisotropic TbF3 Single Crystals

    The present paper investigates the Faraday effect and absorption and luminescence spectra of single-crystal TbF3 measured at 90 K and 300 K. The optical-quality single-phase TbF3 crystals (structural type β-YF3) were grown by the Bridgman technique. Faraday rotation angles were measured at remagnetization along the [100] crystallographic axis. Low temperature optical measurements were carried out along the [100] axis. “Quasi-doublet” sublevels with energy at 0 cm-1, 65 cm-1 and 190 cm-1, and also a singlet sublevel with energy at 114 cm-1 located in the ground 7F6 multiplet were determined from the low temperature luminescence spectra. The Van-Vleck behavior of the magnetic susceptibility χb can be satisfactorily explained by the magnetic mixing of wave functions belonging to the ground and first excited “quasi-doublet” sublevels at 0 and 65 cm-1, respectively. Analysis of the oscillation dependences of the rotation angle showed that the value of the natural birefringence (Δn ≈ 0.0186) remains nearly constant within the wavelength and temperature ranges under investigation. As the temperature decreases, we find significant increases in the oscillation amplitude of the rotation angle and in the Verdet constant V. The spectral dependences V(χ) are linear throughout the temperature range. The magnetooptical activity of TbF3 can be explained by means of the spin- and parity-allowed electric-dipole 4f→5d transitions in the Tb3+ ions

    Analysis of the spectra of trivalent erbium in multiple sites of hexagonal aluminum nitride

    The 12 K cathodoluminescence spectra of Er3+ doped into single crystals of aluminum nitride (2H-AlN) in the hexagonal phase are reported between 320 nm and 775 nm. The emission spectra represent transitions from the lower Stark level of 2P(3/2) to the Stark levels of the 4I(15/2), 4I(13/2), 4I(11/2), 4I(9/2), 4F(9/2), and 4S(3/2) multiplet manifolds of Er3+(4f(11)). Emission spectra from 4S(3/2) to 4I(15/2) are also reported. All observed strong line emission are accounted for in terms of two principle sites, denoted site a and site b , with a few line spectra attributed to additional sites. A parameterized Hamiltonian that includes the atomic and crystal-field terms for Er3+(4f(11)) (2S+1)L_J was used to determine the symmetry and the crystal field splitting of the a and b sites. A descent in symmetry calculation was carried out to determine if distortion due to the size difference between Er, Al and the vacancies can be discerned. Modeling results assuming C_3v and C_1h are discussed. It appears that the sensitivity to a C_1h model is not sufficient to invalidate the choice of C_3v as an approximate symmetry for both sites. The g-factors reported from an EPR study of Er3+ in single-crystal AlN are in reasonable agreement with calculated g-factors for Er3+ in the a site assuming C_3v symmetry

    Cryogenic Optical Performance of a Lightweighted Mirror Assembly for Future Space Astronomical Telescopes: Correlating Optical Test Results and Thermal Optical Model

    A 43cm diameter stacked core mirror demonstrator was interferometrically tested at room temperature down to 250 degrees Kelvin for thermal deformation. The 2.5m radius of curvature spherical mirror assembly was constructed by low temperature fusing three abrasive waterjet core sections between two CNC pocket milled face sheets. The 93% lightweighted Corning ULE mirror assembly represents the current state of the art for future UV, optical, near IR space telescopes. During the multiple thermal test cycles, test results of interferometric test, thermal IR images of the front face were recorded in order to validate thermal optical model

    Pleiotropic meta-analysis of cognition, education, and schizophrenia differentiates roles of early neurodevelopmental and adult synaptic pathways

    Susceptibility to schizophrenia is inversely correlated with general cognitive ability at both the phenotypic and the genetic level. Paradoxically, a modest but consistent positive genetic correlation has been reported between schizophrenia and educational attainment, despite the strong positive genetic correlation between cognitive ability and educational attainment. Here we leverage published genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in cognitive ability, education, and schizophrenia to parse biological mechanisms underlying these results. Association analysis based on subsets (ASSET), a pleiotropic meta-analytic technique, allowed jointly associated loci to be identified and characterized. Specifically, we identified subsets of variants associated in the expected (“concordant”) direction across all three phenotypes (i.e., greater risk for schizophrenia, lower cognitive ability, and lower educational attainment); these were contrasted with variants that demonstrated the counterintuitive (“discordant”) relationship between education and schizophrenia (i.e., greater risk for schizophrenia and higher educational attainment). ASSET analysis revealed 235 independent loci associated with cognitive ability, education, and/or schizophrenia at p < 5 × 10−8. Pleiotropic analysis successfully identified more than 100 loci that were not significant in the input GWASs. Many of these have been validated by larger, more recent single-phenotype GWASs. Leveraging the joint genetic correlations of cognitive ability, education, and schizophrenia, we were able to dissociate two distinct biological mechanisms—early neurodevelopmental pathways that characterize concordant allelic variation and adulthood synaptic pruning pathways—that were linked to the paradoxical positive genetic association between education and schizophrenia. Furthermore, genetic correlation analyses revealed that these mechanisms contribute not only to the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia but also to the broader biological dimensions implicated in both general health outcomes and psychiatric illness

    Identifying nootropic drug targets via large-scale cognitive GWAS and transcriptomics

    Broad-based cognitive deficits are an enduring and disabling symptom for many patients with severe mental illness, and these impairments are inadequately addressed by current medications. While novel drug targets for schizophrenia and depression have emerged from recent large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of these psychiatric disorders, GWAS of general cognitive ability can suggest potential targets for nootropic drug repurposing. Here, we (1) meta-analyze results from two recent cognitive GWAS to further enhance power for locus discovery; (2) employ several complementary transcriptomic methods to identify genes in these loci that are credibly associated with cognition; and (3) further annotate the resulting genes using multiple chemoinformatic databases to identify "druggable" targets. Using our meta-analytic data set (N = 373,617), we identified 241 independent cognition-associated loci (29 novel), and 76 genes were identified by 2 or more methods of gene identification. Actin and chromatin binding gene sets were identified as novel pathways that could be targeted via drug repurposing. Leveraging our transcriptomic and chemoinformatic databases, we identified 16 putative genes targeted by existing drugs potentially available for cognitive repurposing.Peer reviewe

    Genome-wide association meta-analysis in 269,867 individuals identifies new genetic and functional links to intelligence

    Intelligence is highly heritable(1) and a major determinant of human health and well-being(2). Recent genome-wide meta-analyses have identified 24 genomic loci linked to variation in intelligence3-7, but much about its genetic underpinnings remains to be discovered. Here, we present a large-scale genetic association study of intelligence (n = 269,867), identifying 205 associated genomic loci (190 new) and 1,016 genes (939 new) via positional mapping, expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) mapping, chromatin interaction mapping, and gene-based association analysis. We find enrichment of genetic effects in conserved and coding regions and associations with 146 nonsynonymous exonic variants. Associated genes are strongly expressed in the brain, specifically in striatal medium spiny neurons and hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Gene set analyses implicate pathways related to nervous system development and synaptic structure. We confirm previous strong genetic correlations with multiple health-related outcomes, and Mendelian randomization analysis results suggest protective effects of intelligence for Alzheimer's disease and ADHD and bidirectional causation with pleiotropic effects for schizophrenia. These results are a major step forward in understanding the neurobiology of cognitive function as well as genetically related neurological and psychiatric disorders.Peer reviewe

    The Friendship between Science and Religion

    Many discussions of the relationship between science and religion start with the premise of conflict. However, this need not be the case. According to Alvin Plantinga, “There is superficial conflict but deep concord between science and religion.” In this presentation, we will examine the roots of that “deep concord,” and show that they arise from the Christian beliefs of the early founders of modern empirical science. The foundational principles upon which modern science is based—the universe is worth studying, it follows mathematical laws, humans are capable of understanding those laws, and the results must be repeatable—arise directly from the doctrine of Creation and the Fall. Once we understand the implications of the fact that Christians, not atheists, established the methodology of modern empirical science, we will be better equipped to handle conflicts that arise between current understandings of theology and science. We will be able to understand many of these conflicts as legitimate differences between friends, rather than as existential threats that must be overcome at all costs
