Cognitive bias modification for social anxiety in adults who stutter: a feasibility study of a randomised controlled trial
Objective: To determine the feasibility and acceptability of a computerised treatment for social anxiety disorder for adults who stutter including identification of recruitment, retention and completion rates, large cost drivers and selection of most appropriate outcome measure(s) to inform the design of a future definitive trial. Design: Two-group parallel design (treatment vs placebo), double-blinded feasibility study. Participants: 31 adults who stutter. Intervention: Attention training via an online probe detection task in which the stimuli were images of faces displaying neutral and disgusted expressions. Main outcome measures Psychological measures: Structured Clinical Interview Global Assessment of Functioning score; Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale; Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory; State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs about Stuttering. Speech fluency: percent syllables stuttered. Economic evaluation: resource use questionnaire; EuroQol three-dimension questionnaire. Acceptability: Likert Scale questionnaire of experience of trial, acceptability of the intervention and randomisation procedure. Results: Feasibility of recruitment strategy was demonstrated. Participant feedback indicated that the intervention and definitive trial, including randomisation, would be acceptable to adults who stutter. Of the 31 participants who were randomised, 25 provided data at all three data collection points. Conclusions: The feasibility study informed components of the intervention. Modifications to the design are needed before a definitive trial can be undertaken. Trial registration number I SRCTN55065978
Comparison of structural transformations and superconductivity in compressed Sulfur and Selenium
Density-functional calculations are presented for high-pressure structural
phases of S and Se. The structural phase diagrams, phonon spectra,
electron-phonon coupling, and superconducting properties of the isovalent
elements are compared. We find that with increasing pressure, Se adopts a
sequence of ever more closely packed structures (beta-Po, bcc, fcc), while S
favors more open structures (beta-Po, simple cubic, bcc). These differences are
shown to be attributable to differences in the S and Se core states. All the
compressed phases of S and Se considered are calculated to have weak to
moderate electron-phonon coupling strengths consistent with superconducting
transition temperatures in the range of 1 to 20 K. Our results compare well
with experimental data on the beta-Po --> bcc transition pressure in Se and on
the superconducting transition temperature in beta-Po S. Further experiments
are suggested to search for the other structural phases predicted at higher
pressures and to test theoretical results on the electron-phonon interaction
and superconducting properties
Structural characterization of natural nickel and copper binding ligands along the US GEOTRACES Eastern Pacific Zonal Transect

Various metals can compete for the same ligand chelation sites, and the final speciation of bound metals is determined by relative binding affinities, concentrations of binding sites, uncomplexed metal concentrations, and association/dissociation kinetics. Different ligands have a wide range of metal affinities and specificities. However, the chemical composition of these ligands in the marine environment remains poorly constrained, which has hindered progress in modeling marine metal speciation. In this study, we detected and characterized natural ligands that bind copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) in the eastern South Pacific Ocean with liquid chromatography tandem inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC-ICPMS), and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS). Dissolved Cu, Ni, and ligand concentrations were highest near the coast. Chromatographically unresolved polar compounds dominated ligands isolated near the coast by solid phase extraction. Offshore, metal and ligand concentrations decreased, but several new ligands appeared. One major ligand was detected that bound both Cu2+ and Ni2+. Based on accurate mass and fragmentation measurements, this compound has a molecular formula of [C20H21N4O8S2+M]+ (M = metal isotope) and contains several azole-like metal binding groups. Additional lipophilic Ni complexes were also present only in oligotrophic waters, with masses of 649, 698, and 712 m/z (corresponding to the 58Ni metal complex). Molecular formulae of [C32H54N3O6S2Ni]+ and [C33H56N3O6S2Ni]+ were determined for two of these compounds. Addition of Cu and Ni to the samples also revealed the presence of additional compounds that can bind both Ni and Cu. Effects of prenatal low protein and postnatal high fat diets on visceral adipose tissue macrophage phenotypes and IL-6 expression in Sprague Dawley rat offspring
Adipose tissue macrophages (ATM) are implicated in adipose tissue inflammation and obesity-related insulin resistance. Maternal low protein models result in fetal programming of obesity. The study aims to answer whether maternal undernutrition by protein restriction affects the ATM M1 or M2 phenotype under postnatal high fat diet in F1 offspring. Using a rat model of prenatal low protein (LP, 8% protein) diet followed by a postnatal high fat energy diet (HE, 45% fat) or low fat normal energy diet (NE, 10% fat) for 12 weeks, we investigated the effects of these diets on adiposity, programming of the offspring ATM phenotype, and the associated inflammatory response in adipose tissue. Fat mass in newborn and 12-week old LP fed offspring was lower than that of normal protein (20%; NP) fed offspring; however, the adipose tissue growth rate was higher compared to the NP fed offspring. While LP did not affect the number of CD68+ or CD206+ cells in adipose tissue of NE offspring, it attenuated the number of these cells in offspring fed HE. In offspring fed HE, LP offspring had a lower percentage of CD11c+CD206+ ATMs, whose abundancy was correlated with the size of the adipocytes. Noteworthy, similar to HE treatment, LP increased gene expression of IL-6 within ATMs. Two-way ANOVA showed an interaction of prenatal LP and postnatal HE on IL-6 and IL-1β transcription. Overall, both LP and HE diets impact ATM phenotype by affecting the ratio of CD11c+CD206+ ATMs and the expression of IL-6
The SDSS-IV MaNGA sample : design, optimization, and usage considerations
We describe the sample design for the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey and present the final properties of the main samples along with important considerations for using these samples for science. Our target selection criteria were developed while simultaneously optimizing the size distribution of the MaNGA integral field units (IFUs), the IFU allocation strategy, and the target density to produce a survey defined in terms of maximizing S/N, spatial resolution, and sample size. Our selection strategy makes use of redshift limits that only depend oni-band absolute magnitude (Mi), or, for a small subset of our sample, Mi and color (NUV-i). Such a strategy ensures that all galaxies span the same range in angular size irrespective of luminosity and are therefore covered evenly by the adopted range of IFU sizes. We define three samples: the Primary and Secondary samples are selected to have a flat number density with respect to Mi and are targeted to have spectroscopic coverage to 1.5 and 2.5 effective radii (Re),respectively. The Color-Enhanced supplement increases the number of galaxies in the low-density regions of color-magnitude space by extending the redshift limits of the Primary sample in the appropriate color bins. The samples cover the stellar mass range 5 x 108 ≤ M⋆ ≤ 3 x 1011 M⊙ /h2 and are sampled at median physical resolutions of 1.37 kpc and 2.5 kpc for the Primary and Secondary samples respectively. We provide weights that will statistically correct for our luminosity and color-dependent selection function and IFU allocation strategy, thus correcting the observed sample to a volume limited sample.PostprintPeer reviewe
SDSS-IV MaNGA:the spatially resolved stellar initial mass function in ∼ 400 early-type galaxies
MaNGA provides the opportunity to make precise spatially resolved
measurements of the IMF slope in galaxies owing to its unique combination of
spatial resolution, wavelength coverage and sample size. We derive radial
gradients in age, element abundances and IMF slope analysing optical and
near-infrared absorption features from stacked spectra out to the half-light
radius of 366 early-type galaxies with masses .
We find flat gradients in age and [/Fe] ratio, as well as negative
gradients in metallicity, consistent with the literature. We further derive
significant negative gradients in the [Na/Fe] ratio with galaxy centres being
well enhanced in Na abundance by up to 0.5 dex. Finally, we find a gradient in
IMF slope with a bottom-heavy IMF in the centre (typical mass excess factor of
1.5) and a Milky Way-type IMF at the half-light radius. This pattern is
mass-dependent with the lowest mass galaxies in our sample featuring only a
shallow gradient around a Milky Way IMF. Our results imply the local
IMF- relation within galaxies to be even steeper than the global
relation and hint towards the local metallicity being the dominating factor
behind the IMF variations. We also employ different stellar population models
in our analysis and show that a radial IMF gradient is found independently of
the stellar population model used. A similar analysis of the Wing-Ford band
provides inconsistent results and further evidence of the difficulty in

Marvin : a tool kit for streamlined access and visualization of the SDSS-IV MaNGA data set
The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, one of three core programs of the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV), is producing a massive, high-dimensional integral field spectroscopic data set. However, leveraging the MaNGA data set to address key questions about galaxy formation presents serious data-related challenges due to the combination of its spatially interconnected measurements and sheer volume. For each galaxy, the MaNGA pipelines produce relatively large data files to preserve the spatial correlations of the spectra and measurements, but this comes at the expense of storing the data set in coarse units or "chunks." This coarse chunking and the total volume of the data make it time-consuming to download and curate locally stored data. Thus, accessing, querying, visually exploring, and performing statistical analyses across the whole data set at a fine-grained scale is extremely challenging using just FITS files. To overcome these challenges, we have developed Marvin, a toolkit consisting of a Python package, Application Programming Interface, and web application utilizing a remote database. Marvin allows users to seamlessly work with MaNGA data by abstracting both remote and local (on-disk) interactions to behind-the-scenes data-handling functions. Combining this capability with additional processing and querying tools, users can create powerful Python workflows that are easy to import and share. Marvin's web application uses these tools to enable "point-and-click" examination of data cubes and derived maps, as well as search queries for all publicly released MaNGA galaxies. Marvin's robust and sustainable design minimizes maintenance, while facilitating user-contributed extensions such as high-level analysis code.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Feasibility and acceptability of a multi-domain intervention to increase Mediterranean diet adherence and physical activity in older UK adults at risk of dementia: Protocol for the MedEx-UK randomised controlled trial
Introduction Dementia prevalence continues to increase, and effective interventions are needed to prevent, delay or slow its progression. Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and increased physical activity (PA) have been proposed as strategies to facilitate healthy brain ageing and reduce dementia risk. However, to date, there have been no dementia prevention trials in the UK focussed on combined dietary and PA interventions. This study aims to: (1) assess feasibility and acceptability of a theory-underpinned digital and group-based intervention for dementia risk reduction in an 'at risk' UK cohort; (2) evaluate behaviour change responses to the intervention; and, (3) provide information on cognitive, neurological, vascular and physiological outcomes to inform the design of a follow-on, full-scale efficacy trial. Methods One hundred and eight participants aged 55 to 74 years with a QRISK2 score of ≥10% will be recruited to take part in this 24-week multi-site study. Participants will be randomised into three parallel arms: (1) Control; (2) MedDiet; and, (3) MedDiet+PA. The study will evaluate a personalised website, group session and food delivery intervention to increase MedDiet adherence and PA in older adults at risk of dementia. Diet and PA will be monitored prior to, during and following the intervention. Feasibility, acceptability and hypothesised mediators will be assessed in addition to measures of cognitive function, brain structure/perfusion (MRI), vascular function and metabolic markers (blood, urine and faecal) prior to, and following, the intervention. Discussion This trial will provide insights into the feasibility, acceptability and mechanism of effect of a multi-domain intervention focussed on the MedDiet alone and PA for dementia risk reduction in an 'at risk' UK cohort. Ethics and dissemination The study has received NHS REC and HRA approval (18/NI/0191). Findings will be disseminated via conference presentations, public lectures, and peer-reviewed publications. The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment
The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in
operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from
this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release
Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first
two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14
is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all
data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14
is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation
Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the
Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2),
including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine
learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes
from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous
release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of
the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the
important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both
targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS
website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to
data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is
planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be
