Pyroclastic deposits and volcanic history of Mayor Island
The emergent summit of Mayor Island, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, is a peralkaline rhyolite volcano constructed by: a sequence of lava flows, the Tutaretare Rhyolite Formation new; and pyroclastic deposits, the Oira Pyroclastite Formition (new). These 2 formations constitute the Mayor Island Group new. The pyroclastic deposits mantle most of the outer slopes of the island, in places exceeding 100 m in thickness, and also occur interbedded with lava flows of the main cone. The pyroclastics have been informally assigned on the basis of their compositional, welding and textural, and sedimentary structural characteristics to one or other of 15 lithotypes which may be related to particular modes of eruption and emplacement, of both airfall (phreatic, phreatomagmatic, phreatoplinian, and plinian types) and pyroclastic flow (ignimbrite, nuée ardente, and base surge types origins). A sixteenth lithotype comprises epiclastic deposits formed possibly by catastrophic overspill from an ancestral crater lake. Two new radiocarbon dates on logs from the pyroclastic deposits are recorded: (Wk105) 8000 ± 70 years B.P., and (Wk77) 6340 ± 190 years B.P. Recognition of the calcalkaline Rotoehu and possibly Rotoma Ashes on Mayor Island, together with the new radiocarbon dates, enables definition of 8 phases of major volcanic activity, each separated by relatively quiescent periods with erosion and paleosol formation. Volcanism commenced sometime prior to 42 000 years ago and has continued intermittently up to the eruption of the young dome lavas, possibly less than 1000 years ago. At present, only I Mayor Island-derived tephra has been identified on the mainland of the North Island, namely the Tuhua Tephra dated (Wk77) at source as 6340 ± 190 years B .P. However, the character and magnitude of several of the pyroclastic units on Mayor Island is such that recognition of other peralkaline tephras is anticipated in northern North Island
A quantitative theory-versus-experiment comparison for the intense laser dissociation of H2+
A detailed theory-versus-experiment comparison is worked out for H
intense laser dissociation, based on angularly resolved photodissociation
spectra recently recorded in H.Figger's group. As opposite to other
experimental setups, it is an electric discharge (and not an optical
excitation) that prepares the molecular ion, with the advantage for the
theoretical approach, to neglect without lost of accuracy, the otherwise
important ionization-dissociation competition. Abel transformation relates the
dissociation probability starting from a single ro-vibrational state, to the
probability of observing a hydrogen atom at a given pixel of the detector
plate. Some statistics on initial ro-vibrational distributions, together with a
spatial averaging over laser focus area, lead to photofragments kinetic
spectra, with well separated peaks attributed to single vibrational levels. An
excellent theory-versus-experiment agreement is reached not only for the
kinetic spectra, but also for the angular distributions of fragments
originating from two different vibrational levels resulting into more or less
alignment. Some characteristic features can be interpreted in terms of basic
mechanisms such as bond softening or vibrational trapping.Comment: submitted to PRA on 21.05.200
Helminth infection reactivates latent Îł-herpesvirus via cytokine competition at a viral promoter
Mammals are coinfected by multiple pathogens that interact through unknown mechanisms. We found that helminth infection, characterized by the induction of the cytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4) and the activation of the transcription factor Stat6, reactivated murine Îł-herpesvirus infection in vivo. IL-4 promoted viral replication and blocked the antiviral effects of interferon-Îł (IFNÎł) by inducing Stat6 binding to the promoter for an important viral transcriptional transactivator. IL-4 also reactivated human Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus from latency in cultured cells. Exogenous IL-4 plus blockade of IFNÎł reactivated latent murine Îł-herpesvirus infection in vivo, suggesting a "two-signal" model for viral reactivation. Thus, chronic herpesvirus infection, a component of the mammalian virome, is regulated by the counterpoised actions of multiple cytokines on viral promoters that have evolved to sense host immune status
Optical nanofibers and spectroscopy
We review our recent progress in the production and characterization of
tapered optical fibers with a sub-wavelength diameter waist. Such fibers
exhibit a pronounced evanescent field and are therefore a useful tool for
highly sensitive evanescent wave spectroscopy of adsorbates on the fiber waist
or of the medium surrounding. We use a carefully designed flame pulling process
that allows us to realize preset fiber diameter profiles. In order to determine
the waist diameter and to verify the fiber profile, we employ scanning electron
microscope measurements and a novel accurate in situ optical method based on
harmonic generation. We use our fibers for linear and non-linear absorption and
fluorescence spectroscopy of surface-adsorbed organic molecules and investigate
their agglomeration dynamics. Furthermore, we apply our spectroscopic method to
quantum dots on the surface of the fiber waist and to caesium vapor surrounding
the fiber. Finally, towards dispersive measurements, we present our first
results on building and testing a single-fiber bi-modal interferometer.Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in Applied Physics B.

Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption
that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed
using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV.
The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard
Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of
charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for
m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81
GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the
95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
History and Applications of Dust Devil Studies
Studies of dust devils, and their impact on society, are reviewed. Dust devils have been noted since antiquity, and have been documented in many countries, as well as on the planet Mars. As time-variable vortex entities, they have become a cultural motif. Three major stimuli of dust devil research are identified, nuclear testing, terrestrial climate studies, and perhaps most significantly, Mars research. Dust devils present an occasional safety hazard to light structures and have caused several deaths
Search for oscillations using inclusive lepton events
A search for Bs oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995. Compared to previous inclusive lepton analyses, the prop er time resolution and b-flavour mistag rate are significantly improved. Additional sensitivity to Bs mixing is obtained by identifying subsamples of events having a Bs purity which is higher than the average for the whole data sample. Unbinned maximum likelihood amplitude fits are performed to derive a lower limit of Dms>9.5 ps-1 at 95% CL. Combining with the ALEPH Ds based analyses yields Dms>9.6 ps-1 at 95% CL.A search for B0s oscillations is performed using a sample of semileptonic b-hadron decays collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991-1995.
