Hydrogen patterning of Ga1-xMnxAs for planar spintronics
We demonstrate two patterning techniques based on hydrogen passivation of
Ga1-xMnxAs to produce isolated ferromagnetically active regions embedded
uniformly in a paramagnetic, insulating host. The first method consists of
selective hydrogenation of Ga1-xMnxAs by lithographic masking. Magnetotransport
measurements of Hall-bars made in this manner display the characteristic
properties of the hole-mediated ferromagnetic phase, which result from good
pattern isolation. Arrays of Ga1-xMnxAs dots as small as 250 nm across have
been realized by this process. The second process consists of blanket
hydrogenation of Ga1-xMnxAs followed by local reactivation using confined
low-power pulsed-laser annealing. Conductance imaging reveals local electrical
reactivation of micrometer-sized regions that accompanies the restoration of
ferromagnetism. The spatial resolution achievable with this method can
potentially reach <100 nm by employing near-field laser processing. The high
spatial resolution attainable by hydrogenation patterning enables the
development of systems with novel functionalities such as lateral
spin-injection as well as the exploration of magnetization dynamics in
individual and coupled structures made from this novel class of semiconductors.Comment: ICDS-24, July 2007. 8 pages with 4 figure
Well-Posed Initial-Boundary Evolution in General Relativity
Maximally dissipative boundary conditions are applied to the initial-boundary
value problem for Einstein's equations in harmonic coordinates to show that it
is well-posed for homogeneous boundary data and for boundary data that is small
in a linearized sense. The method is implemented as a nonlinear evolution code
which satisfies convergence tests in the nonlinear regime and is robustly
stable in the weak field regime. A linearized version has been stably matched
to a characteristic code to compute the gravitational waveform radiated to
infinity.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures; added another convergence plot to Fig. 2 + minor

Black Hole Interaction Energy
The interaction energy between two black holes at large separation distance
is calculated. The first term in the expansion corresponds to the Newtonian
interaction between the masses. The second term corresponds to the spin-spin
interaction. The calculation is based on the interaction energy defined on the
two black holes initial data. No test particle approximation is used. The
relation between this formula and cosmic censorship is discussed.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX2
Orbital Kondo behavior from dynamical structural defects
The interaction between an atom moving in a model double-well potential and
the conduction electrons is treated using renormalization group methods in
next-to-leading logarithmic order. A large number of excited states is taken
into account and the Kondo temperature is computed as a function of
barrier parameters. We find that for special parameters can be close to
and it can be of the same order of magnitude as the renormalized
splitting . However, in the perturbative regime we always find that

Determination of the Strong Coupling \boldmath{\as} from hadronic Event Shapes and NNLO QCD predictions using JADE Data
Event Shape Data from annihilation into hadrons collected by the
JADE experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 14 GeV and 44 GeV are used
to determine the strong coupling . QCD predictions complete to
next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), alternatively combined with resummed
next-to-leading-log-approximation (NNLO+NLLA) calculations, are used. The
combined value from six different event shape observables at the six JADE
centre-of-mass energies using the NNLO calculations is
= 0.1210 +/- 0.0007(stat.) +/- 0.0021(expt.) +/- 0.0044(had.)
+/- 0.0036(theo.) and with the NNLO+NLLA calculations the combined value is
= 0.1172 +/- 0.0006(stat.) +/- 0.0020(expt.) +/- 0.0035(had.) +/-
0.0030(theo.) . The stability of the NNLO and NNLO+NLLA results with respect to
missing higher order contributions, studied by variations of the
renormalisation scale, is improved compared to previous results obtained with
NLO+NLLA or with NLO predictions only. The observed energy dependence of
agrees with the QCD prediction of asymptotic freedom and excludes
absence of running with 99% confidence level.Comment: 9 pages, EPHJA style, 4 figures, corresponds to published version

Overcritical states of a superconductor strip in a magnetic environment
A current-carrying superconducting strip partly penetrated by magnetic flux
and surrounded by a bulk magnet of high permeability is considered. Two types
of samples are studied: those with critical current controlled by an edge
barrier dominating over the pinning, and those with high pinning-mediated
critical current masking the edge barrier. It is shown for both cases that the
current distribution in a central flux-free part of the strip is strongly
affected by the actual shape of the magnetic surroundings. Explicit analytical
solutions for the sheet current and self-field distributions are obtained which
show that, depending on the geometry, the effect may suppress the total
loss-free transport current of the strip or enhance it by orders of magnitude.
The effect depends strongly on the shape of the magnet and its distance to the
superconductor but only weakly on the magnetic permeability.Comment: 20 pages, 20 figure
Constraints on Dark Matter Annihilation in Clusters of Galaxies with the Fermi Large Area Telescope
Nearby clusters and groups of galaxies are potentially bright sources of
high-energy gamma-ray emission resulting from the pair-annihilation of dark
matter particles. However, no significant gamma-ray emission has been detected
so far from clusters in the first 11 months of observations with the Fermi
Large Area Telescope. We interpret this non-detection in terms of constraints
on dark matter particle properties. In particular for leptonic annihilation
final states and particle masses greater than ~200 GeV, gamma-ray emission from
inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons is expected to dominate the dark
matter annihilation signal from clusters, and our gamma-ray limits exclude
large regions of the parameter space that would give a good fit to the recent
anomalous Pamela and Fermi-LAT electron-positron measurements. We also present
constraints on the annihilation of more standard dark matter candidates, such
as the lightest neutralino of supersymmetric models. The constraints are
particularly strong when including the fact that clusters are known to contain
substructure at least on galaxy scales, increasing the expected gamma-ray flux
by a factor of ~5 over a smooth-halo assumption. We also explore the effect of
uncertainties in cluster dark matter density profiles, finding a systematic
uncertainty in the constraints of roughly a factor of two, but similar overall
conclusions. In this work, we focus on deriving limits on dark matter models; a
more general consideration of the Fermi-LAT data on clusters and clusters as
gamma-ray sources is forthcoming.Comment: accepted to JCAP, Corresponding authors: T.E. Jeltema and S. Profumo,

Search for Higgs bosons decaying to tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into
tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The
data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, were collected by
the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits at the
95% C.L. on the product of production cross section and branching ratio for a
scalar resonance decaying into tautau pairs, and we then interpret these limits
as limits on the production of Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric
standard model (MSSM) and as constraints in the MSSM parameter space.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
Measurement of the photon-jet production differential cross section in collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV
We present measurements of the differential cross section dsigma/dpT_gamma
for the inclusive production of a photon in association with a b-quark jet for
photons with rapidities |y_gamma|< 1.0 and 30<pT_gamma <300 GeV, as well as for
photons with 1.5<|y_gamma|< 2.5 and 30< pT_gamma <200 GeV, where pT_gamma is
the photon transverse momentum. The b-quark jets are required to have pT>15 GeV
and rapidity |y_jet| < 1.5. The results are based on data corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb^-1, recorded with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The measured cross
sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations
using different sets of parton distribution functions as well as to predictions
based on the kT-factorization QCD approach, and those from the Sherpa and
Pythia Monte Carlo event generators.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW, WZ and Wgamma production in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present final searches of the anomalous gammaWW and ZWW trilinear gauge
boson couplings from WW and WZ production using lepton plus dijet final states
and a combination with results from Wgamma, WW, and WZ production with leptonic
final states. The analyzed data correspond to up to 8.6/fb of integrated
luminosity collected by the D0 detector in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96
TeV. We set the most stringent limits at a hadron collider to date assuming two
different relations between the anomalous coupling parameters
Delta\kappa_\gamma, lambda, and Delta g_1^Z for a cutoff energy scale Lambda=2
TeV. The combined 68% C.L. limits are -0.057<Delta\kappa_\gamma<0.154,
-0.015<lambda<0.028, and -0.008<Delta g_1^Z<0.054 for the LEP parameterization,
and -0.007<Delta\kappa<0.081 and -0.017<lambda<0.028 for the equal couplings
parameterization. We also present the most stringent limits of the W boson
magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
