The Bostrichidae of the Maltese Islands (Coleoptera)
The Bostrichidae of the Maltese Islands are reviewed. Ten species are recorded with certainty from this Archipelago, of which 6 namely, Trogoxylon impressum (Comolli, 1837), Amphicerus bimaculatus (A.G. Olivier, 1790), Heterobostrychus aequalis (Waterhouse, 1884), Sinoxylon unidentatum (Fabricius, 1801), Xyloperthella picea (A.G. Olivier, 1790) and Apate monachus Fabricius, 1775 are recorded for the first time. Two of the mentioned species (H. aequalis and S. unidentatum) are alien and recorded only on the basis of single captures and the possible establishment of these species is discussed. Earlier records of Scobicia pustulata (Fabricius, 1801) from Malta are incorrect and should be attributed to S. chevrieri (A. Villa & J.B. Villa, 1835). A zoogeographical analysis and an updated checklist of the 12 species of Bostrichidae recorded from the Maltese Islands and neighbouring Sicilian islands (Pantelleria, Linosa and Lampedusa) are also provided.
Rhizopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792) form granulipennis Lesne in Beeson & Bhatia, 1937 from Uttarakhand (northern India) was overlooked by almost all subsequent authors. Its history is summarized and the following new synonymy is established: Rhizopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792) form granulipennis Lesne in Beeson & Bhatia, 1937 = Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius, 1792), syn. n.
Finally, records of Amphicerus bimaculatus from Azerbaijan, of Bostrichus capucinus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Jordan and Syria, of Scobicia chevrieri from Jordan and Italy, of Xyloperthella picea from Italy, and of Apate monachus from Corsica (France) and Italy, are also provided.peer-reviewe
Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine
The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine presently includes nine board certified maternal-fetal specialists. They are: Kimberly K. Leslie, MD (Department Head), Jerome Yankowitz, MD (Division Director), Jennifer R. Niebyl, MD, Asha Rijhsinghani, MD, Janet I. Andrews, MD, Stephen K. Hunter, MD, PhD., Kristi Borowski, MD, Mark Santillan, MD, and Andrea Greiner, MD. Dr. Roger A. Williamson, double boarded in Genetics and Obstetrics, is also a member of the Division. Drs. Yankowitz and Borowski are also board certified in clinical genetics
The Truth About Voter Fraud
Allegations of election-related fraud make for enticing press. Many Americans remember vivid stories of voting improprieties in Chicagoland, or the suspiciously sudden appearance of LBJ's alphabetized ballot box in Texas, or Governor Earl Long's quip: "When I die, I want to be buried in Louisiana, so I can stay active in politics." Voter fraud, in particular, has the feel of a bank heist caper: roundly condemned but technically fascinating, and sufficiently lurid to grab and hold headlines. Perhaps because these stories are dramatic, voter fraud makes a popular scapegoat. In the aftermath of a close election, losing candidates are often quick to blame voter fraud for the results. Legislators cite voter fraud as justification for various new restrictions on the exercise of the franchise. And pundits trot out the same few anecdotes time and again as proof that a wave of fraud is imminent.Allegations of widespread voter fraud, however, often prove greatly exaggerated. It is easy to grab headlines with a lurid claim ("Tens of thousands may be voting illegally!"); the follow-up -- when any exists -- is not usually deemed newsworthy. Yet on closer examination, many of the claims of voter fraud amount to a great deal of smoke without much fire. The allegations simply do not pan out

Cultured microvascular endothelial cells derived from the bovine corpus luteum possess NCAM-140
Previously, five phenotypically different, stable types of microvascular endothelial cells (MVE) were isolated from the bovine corpus and cultured successfully. We found that three out of these five types of MVE express the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM). As shown by immunocytochemistry, weak NCAM immunoreactivity occurred mainly in the perinuclear area of cell type 1. Monolayers of types 2 and 5 revealed heavy NCAM immunoreactivity, which was localized predominantly at the lateral cell surface outlining the contact zones of adjacent cells. In contrast, cell types 3 and 4 were not NCAM immunoreactive. Western blot analyses substantiated these results: While cell type 1 showed a weak immunoreactive band, cell types 2 and 5 displayed strong NCAM-immunoreactive bands of a molecular weight of approximately 140 kDa (NCAM-140), which was absent in cell types 3 and 4. These results reveal for the first time that NCAM can be expressed by cultured MVE and may serve in mediating endothelial cell contacts. Since luteal cells also express NCAM-140, this adhesion molecule could in addition be involved in the interactions of luteal cells with MVE

First Maltese record of Stephanopachys quadricollis (Marseul, 1879) (Coleoptera, Bostrichidae)
Three specimens of Stephanopachys quadricollis (Marseul, 1878) were recently found in Malta in UV light
traps and represent the first record of this species for this country. Although S. quadricollis is native to
the Mediterranean basin, it is not yet clear if these Maltese records are due to a natural population or to
an interception. Distributional, nomenclatural and biological data on this species are summarized, and a
new synonymy is established: Stephanopachys quadricollis (Marseul, 1879) = Stephanopachys quadraticollis

Challenge, Chaos, and Collaboration: Two Weeks with Studium Teatralne
Katharine Noon, the artistic director of the Ghost Road Company, a Los Angeles theatre troupe, describes Ghost Road’s collaboration with Studium Teatralne, a Warsaw theatre company headed by Piotr Borowski, a former collaborator with Jerzy Grotowski at the Workcenter. Borowski and the Studium Teatralne actors work in a more athletic physical way than the American actors typically do, and the Americans learned this method from the Warsaw actors. The Warsaw group also gained from the collaboration, however: Ghost Road hosted them when they came to Los Angeles to perform, and they also learned Ghost Road’s methods for adapting texts
On the concept of pressure in quantum mechanics
Heat and work are fundamental concepts for thermodynamical systems. When
these are scaled down to the quantum level they require appropriate embeddings.
Here we show that the dependence of the particle spectrum on system size giving
rise to a formal definition of pressure can, indeed, be correlated with an
external mechanical degree of freedom, modelled as a spatial coordinate of a
quantum oscillator. Under specific conditions this correlation is reminiscent
of that occurring in the classical manometer.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
