    Galaxy transmutations: The double ringed galaxy ESO 474-G26

    Surface photometry and a 21cm HI line spectrum of the giant double-ringed galaxy ESO 474-G26 are presented. The morphology of this system is unique among the 30,000 galaxies with >B15. Two almost orthogonal optical rings with diameters of 60 and 40 kpc surround the central body (assuming H0=70 km/s/Mpc). The outer one is an equatorial ring, while the inner ring lies in a nearly polar plane. The rings have blue optical colors typical of late-type spirals. Both appear to be rotating around the central galaxy, so that this system can be considered as a kinematically confirmed polar ring galaxy. Its observational characteristics are typical of galaxy merger remnants. Although the central object has a surface brightness distribution typical of elliptical galaxies, it has a higher surface brightness for its effective radius than ordinary ellipticals. Possible origins of this galaxy are discussed and numerical simulations are presented that illustrate the formation of the two rings in the merging process of two spiral galaxies, in which the observed appearance of ESO 474-G26 appears to be a transient stage.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    RC J0311+0507: A Candidate for Superpowerful Radio Galaxies in the Early Universe at Redshift z=4.514

    A strong emission line at 6703A has been detected in the optical spectrum for the host galaxy (R=23.1) of the radio source RC J0311+0507 (4C+04.11). This radio galaxy, with a spectral index of 1.31 in the frequency range 365-4850 MHz, is one of the ultrasteep spectrum objects from the deep survey of a sky strip conducted with RATAN-600 in 1980-1981. We present arguments in favor of the identification of this line with Ly\alpha at redshift z=4.514. In this case, the object belongs to the group of extremely distant radio galaxies of ultrahigh radio luminosity (P_{1400}=1.3 x 10^{29}W Hz^{-1}). Such power can be provided only by a fairly massive black hole (~10^9M_\sun}) that formed in a time less than the age of the Universe at the observed z(1.3 Gyr) or had a primordial origin.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Pitch angles of distant spiral galaxies

    We have studied the pitch angles of spiral arms for 31 distant galaxies at z~0.7 from three Hubble Deep Fields (HDF-N, HDF-S, HUDF). Using the pitch angle - rotation velocity relation calibrated from nearby galaxies, we have estimated the rotation velocities of galaxies from the deep fields. These estimates have a low accuracy (~50 km/s), but they allow low-mass and giant galaxies to be distinguished. The Tully-Fisher relation constructed using our velocity estimates shows satisfactory agreement with the actually observed relations for distant galaxies and provides evidence for the luminosity evolution of spiral galaxies.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Longitudinal double spin asymmetries in single hadron quasi-real photoproduction at high pTp_T

    We measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries ALLA_{LL} for single hadron muo-production off protons and deuterons at photon virtuality Q2Q^2 < 1(GeV/c\it c)2^2 for transverse hadron momenta pTp_T in the range 0.7 GeV/c\it c to 4 GeV/c\it c . They were determined using COMPASS data taken with a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/c\it c or 200 GeV/c\it c impinging on polarised 6LiD\mathrm{{}^6LiD} or NH3\mathrm{NH_3} targets. The experimental asymmetries are compared to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and are sensitive to the gluon polarisation ΔG\Delta G inside the nucleon in the range of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons 0.05<xg<0.20.05 < x_g < 0.2

    First Measurement of Chiral Dynamics in \pi^- \gamma -> \pi^- \pi^- \pi^+

    The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated the \pi^- \gamma -> \pi^- \pi^- \pi^+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt(s) < 5 m(\pi), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t' < 0.001 (GeV/c)^2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3\pi-invariant mass m(3\pi) = sqrt(s) were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of s\sqrt{s} with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Resonance Production and ππ\pi\pi S-wave in π+pπππ++precoil\pi^- + p \rightarrow \pi^- \pi^- \pi^+ + p_{recoil} at 190 GeV/c

    The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on diffractively produced πππ+\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ final states using a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a stationary proton target. This data set allows for a systematic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion mass, 0.5<m3π<2.50.5 < m_{3\pi} < 2.5 GeV/c2^2 , and in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, 0.1<t<1.00.1 < t < 1.0 (GeV/c)2^2 . This two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant 3π3\pi production. In this paper, we present detailed studies on selected 3π3\pi partial waves with JPC=0+J^{PC} = 0^{-+}, 1++1^{++}, 2+2^{-+}, 2++2^{++}, and 4++4^{++}. In these waves, we observe the well-known ground-state mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson a1(1420)a_1(1420) decaying into f0(980)πf_0(980) \pi. In addition, we present the results of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the ππ+\pi^-\pi^+ subsystem with IGJPC=0+0++I^{G}J^{PC} = 0^+ 0^{++} in various partial waves from the πππ+\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ data. Evidence is found for correlation of the f0(980)f_0(980) and f0(1500)f_0(1500) appearing as intermediate ππ+\pi^- \pi^+ isobars in the decay of the known π(1800)\pi(1800) and π2(1880)\pi_2(1880).Comment: 96 page

    Interplay among transversity induced asymmetries in hadron leptoproduction

    In the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark several left-right asymmetries are possible for the hadrons in the jet. When only one unpolarized hadron is selected, it exhibits an azimuthal modulation known as Collins effect. When a pair of oppositely charged hadrons is observed, three asymmetries can be considered, a di-hadron asymmetry and two single hadron asymmetries. In lepton deep inelastic scattering on transversely polarized nucleons all these asymmetries are coupled with the transversity distribution. From the high statistics COMPASS data on oppositely charged hadron-pair production we have investigated for the first time the dependence of these three asymmetries on the difference of the azimuthal angles of the two hadrons. The similarity of transversity induced single and di-hadron asymmetries is discussed. A new analysis of the data allows to establish quantitative relationships among them, providing for the first time strong experimental indication that the underlying fragmentation mechanisms are all driven by a common physical process.Comment: 6 figure

    Leading-order determination of the gluon polarisation from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data

    Using a novel analysis technique, the gluon polarisation in the nucleon is re-evaluated using the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry measured in the cross section of semi-inclusive single-hadron muoproduction with photon virtuality Q2>1 (GeV/c)2Q^2>1~({\rm GeV}/c)^2. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/cc polarised muon beam impinging on a polarised 6^6LiD target. By analysing the full range in hadron transverse momentum pTp_{\rm T}, the different pTp_{\rm T}-dependences of the underlying processes are separated using a neural-network approach. In the absence of pQCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the selected kinematic domain, the gluon polarisation Δg/g\Delta g/g is evaluated at leading order in pQCD at a hard scale of μ2=Q2=3(GeV/c)2\mu^2= \langle Q^2 \rangle = 3 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2. It is determined in three intervals of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons, xgx_{\rm g}, covering the range 0.04 ⁣< ⁣xg ⁣< ⁣0.280.04 \!<\! x_{ \rm g}\! <\! 0.28~ and does not exhibit a significant dependence on xgx_{\rm g}. The average over the three intervals, Δg/g=0.113±0.038(stat.)±0.036(syst.)\langle \Delta g/g \rangle = 0.113 \pm 0.038_{\rm (stat.)}\pm 0.036_{\rm (syst.)} at xg0.10\langle x_{\rm g} \rangle \approx 0.10, suggests that the gluon polarisation is positive in the measured xgx_{\rm g} range.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Experimental investigation of transverse spin asymmetries in muon-p SIDIS processes: Collins asymmetries

    The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV positive muon beam and a transversely polarised NH_3 target. The Collins asymmetry of the proton was extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003<x<0.7. These new measurements confirm with higher accuracy previous measurements from the COMPASS and HERMES collaborations, which exhibit a definite effect in the valence quark region. The asymmetries for negative and positive hadrons are similar in magnitude and opposite in sign. They are compatible with model calculations in which the u-quark transversity is opposite in sign and somewhat larger than the d-quark transversity distribution function. The asymmetry is extracted as a function of Bjorken xx, the relative hadron energy zz and the hadron transverse momentum p_T^h. The high statistics and quality of the data also allow for more detailed investigations of the dependence on the kinematic variables. These studies confirm the leading-twist nature of the Collins asymmetry.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
