    Multivariate Statistical Models for the Authentication of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena and Balsamic Vinegar of Modena on 1H-NMR Data: Comparison of Targeted and Untargeted Approaches

    This work aimed to compare targeted and untargeted approaches based on NMR data for the construction of classification models for Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (TBVM) and Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (BVM). Their complexity in terms of composition makes the authentication of these products difficult, which requires the employment of several time-consuming analytical methods. Here, 1H-NMR spectroscopy was selected as the analytical method for the analysis of TVBM and BVM due to its rapidity and efficacy in food authentication. 1H-NMR spectra of old (>12 years) and extra-old (>25 years) TVBM and BVM (>60 days) and aged (>3 years) BVM were acquired, and targeted and untargeted approaches were used for building unsupervised and supervised multivariate statistical modes. Targeted and untargeted approaches were based on quantitative results of peculiar compounds present in vinegar obtained through qNMR, and all spectral variables, respectively. Several classification models were employed, and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) demonstrated sensitivity and specificity percentages higher than 85% for both approaches. The most important discriminating variables were glucose, fructose, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The untargeted approach proved to be the most promising strategy for the construction of LDA models of authentication for TVBM and BVM due to its easier applicability, rapidity, and slightly higher predictive performance. The proposed method for authenticating TBVM and BVM could be employed by Italian producers for safeguarding their valuable products

    Microparticulate polyelectrolyte complexes for gentamicin transport across intestinal epithelial

    Polysaccharide microparticles for the oral administration of gentamicin were designed in order to obtainan increased drug absorption by means of microparticle transport across the intestinal epithelia. Alginate/chitosan microparticles with a size of ∼ 2 μm were developed by spray-drying a water solution containingthe drug complexed with the polyanionic alginate and subsequent alginate cross-linking process bycalcium ions and chitosan. The pre-formulation study, performed by changing the concentration of bothcross-linkers, led to the selection of the most suitable formulation which was assayed for its capacity to be translocated across intestinal epithelia, via both M cells contained in Follicle Associated Epithelium (FAE) ofPeyer’s patches and enterocytes of the mucosal epithelium. An ex vivo perfusion technique of rabbit andrat intestinal tissues containing Peyer’s patches combined with an in vitro method by using Caco-2 cellmonolayers demonstrated the microparticulate carrier ability to be taken up by both M cells and enterocytes.However, only the endocytosis by M cells appeared to provide the microparticle transport from theepithelium toward deeper sub-epithelial regions

    To vote or not to vote? Migrant electoral (dis)engagement in an enlarged Europe

However, compared to the average voter in domestic elections, we still know significantly less about migrants’ motivations to vote or not. Whereas analyses of external voting patterns offer insights into the results of external voting compared to origin populations, there is a lacuna of knowledge about why migrants choose to vote, or not, when they have the right to do so. This article seeks to address this gap by building a framework rooted in both the electoral studies literature and on the growing body of knowledge on external voting within migration studies. We consider migrant voters’ desire, mobilization, and ability to vote, and map the locus of all factors—either in the country of residence, country of origin, or within transnational political space. We explore evidence from 80 in-depth interviews, collected January–May 2020, with four groups of intra-European migrants—Romanian and Polish residing in Norway and Spain—to map the determinants of external voting. Our research generates three insights which challenge or nuance extant research on external voting. We show how migrants’ motivations to vote depend not only on residence and origin contexts but also on subjective factors and perceptions of the legitimacy of external voting. This article complements existing macrolevel studies of voting determinants with an in-depth qualitative microperspective and generates hypotheses that can be further tested in large-n as well as cross-regional comparisons.publishedVersio

    Living here, owning there? Transnational property ownership and migrants’ (Im)mobility considerations byond return

Applying a transnational optic, this article unpacks the relationships between migrants’ property ownership ‘back home’ and their reflections on future moves and stays, not limited to possible return. We draw on 80 semi-structured interviews conducted in 2020 with Polish and Romanian migrants living in Barcelona and Oslo. They left their homeland, sometimes following domestic migration or international migration to other countries, before arriving in Spain and Norway. Based on these case studies of East–West migration within Europe, we contribute to work recognising the ongoing complex and diversified nature of mobilities in Europe. First, we detail what migrants’ property ownership looks like in practice – forms of ownership, types of property, location. Second, we focus on how owning property in Poland or Romania intersects with migrants’ considerations about moving or staying in the future, beyond return. Considerations about future (im)mobility shed light on transnational relationships, as these evolve over time and across space. Furthermore, we find that transnational property ownership in their countries of origin reveals much about migrants’ relations with people and places ‘back home’ and reflects the known non-linearity of migration stories. Overall, however, transnational property ownership is a poor predictor of both return plans and intentions.publishedVersio

    On the formation of content for 'political remittances': an analysis of Polish and Romanian migrants comparative evaluations of 'here' and 'there'

But how does such exposure and opportunities for comparative evaluation of origin and settlement contexts, translate into content for potential political remittances? To answer this question, we analyse 80 interviews with Polish and Romanian migrants living in Barcelona (Spain) and Oslo (Norway). Starting from the established ‘social remittances’, literature, our contribution is to unpack the process of their formation by focusing on what happens at the content-creation stage. We do so through analysis of migrants’ comparative evaluation of their ‘origin’ and ‘settlement’ contexts in regard to three explicitly political issues: corruption, public institutions and democracy. We analyse how exposure to, and comparative evaluation of, different contexts inform migrants’ views, and find non-linearity and inconsistency between migrant groups’ and in individuals’ own patterns of views. This underscores the salience of, first, recognising how the change that migration prompts in migrants’ outlooks may or may not be stronger than preceding political preferences, anchored in ongoing processes of (re)socialisation; and second, of better understanding how migration impacts migrants’ outlooks, by considering the specifics of exposure and comparative evaluation, whether or not ultimately articulated in forms traceable as ‘political remittances’.publishedVersio

    A mid level data fusion strategy for the Varietal Classification of Lambrusco PDO wines

    Nowadays the necessity to reveal the hidden information from complex data sets is increasing due to the development of high-throughput instrumentation. The possibility to jointly analyze data sets arising from different sources (e.g. different analytical determinations/platforms) allows capturing the latent information that would not be extracted by the individual analysis of each block of data. Several approaches are proposed in the literature and are generally referred to as data fusion approaches. In this work a mid level data fusion is proposed for the characterization of three varieties (Salamino di Santa Croce, Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Sorbara) of Lambrusco wine, a typical PDO wine of the district of Modena (Italy). Wine samples of the three different varieties were analyzed by means of 1H-NMR spectroscopy, Emission-Excitation Fluorescence Spectroscopy and HPLC-DAD of the phenolic compounds. Since the analytical outputs are characterized by different dimensionalities (matrix and tensor), several multivariate analyses were applied (PCA, PARAFAC, MCR-ALS) in order to extract and merge, in a hierarchical way, the information present in each data set. The results showed that this approach was able to well characterize Lambrusco samples giving also the possibility to understand the correlation between the sources of information arising from the three analytical techniques

    741 A complex clinical mosaic of severe autoimmune calcific constrictive pericarditis with striking haemodynamic response to immunosuppressive therapy

    Abstract Autoimmune constrictive pericarditis constitutes a conundrum to modern cardiology with much uncertainty surrounding both pathophysiology and optimal treatment strategies. We hereby describe the case of a 35-year-old woman of Nigerian origin with severe right heart failure secondary to calcific constrictive pericarditis. Her past medical history included coagulation factor XI deficiency, leukopenia, 2nd trimester miscarriage and premature labour due to placenta previa with fibrin deposition. Further investigations revealed atrial fibrillation, severe biatrial enlargement, moderate tricuspid and mitral regurgitation, pericardial thickening, post-capillary pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular dip-and-plateau pattern, compatible with severe constrictive pericarditis. Extensive screening for infectious and autoimmune causes only revealed borderline positive ANA (1:80). Thereafter, the patient underwent complete surgical pericardiectomy with pericardial biopsies revealing fibrous thickening, diffuse calcification and lymphocyte/macrophage infiltrates, in the absence of giant multinucleated cells or granulomas. The patient was later discharged but soon experienced relapse of exertional dyspnoea presenting with right-sided haemo-pneumothorax (requiring pleural drainage), diffuse alveolar haemorrhage, large right-sided basal and infrascissural pleural effusion, and ascites. She was treated with high dose iv furosemide, oral ibuprofen and colchicine, suspension of rate control medications, achieving initial reduction in pulmonary oedema and ascites, relapsing however after attempts to switch to oral diuretic therapy. Due to the finding of persistent lymphopenia, further immunological tests were conducted, revealing raised IgG1 levels as well as altered peripheral lymphocyte populations (raised CD4+/CD8+ ratio and CD8+ central memory, reduced CD8 effector memory). This finding in conjunction with the history of factor XI deficiency, 2nd trimester miscarriage and placental fibrin deposition as well as the observation of painful cutaneous nodules at sites of venepuncture, suggestive of Koebner's phenomenon, veered the diagnostic focus to a potential autoimmune aetiology and in particular to systemic lupus erythematosus (>10 ACR-EULAR score points with case reports describing all the above as potential disease manifestations). Furthermore, revision of thoracic CT scans, demonstrated bilateral migratory peribronchovascular nodules with ground-glass halo. CT- guided biopsies thereof were performed revealing focal alveolar damage with capillaritis and alveolar haemorrhage, further corroborating the clinical suspicion of autoimmune disease and justifying the introduction of high-dose oral corticosteroid therapy. In liaison with our tertiary rheumatology centre, the patient was later switched to mycophenolate with gradual weaning from corticosteroid. Concurrent cardiological follow-up revealed persistence of good haemodynamic status (NYHA class II, absence of pulmonary oedema and ascites) with oral diuretic therapy, regression of cutaneous symptoms and echocardiography demonstrating consistent reduction in both mitral and tricuspid regurgitation. This constitutes to our knowledge the first report of autoimmune calcific constrictive pericarditis with significant haemodynamic response to immunosuppressive therapy. Despite the relative rarity of this disease entity, early recognition and instatement of immunosuppressive treatment may prove fundamental to halt and potentially reverse the haemodynamic progression of this highly morbid condition

    Structured reporting for fibrosing lung disease: a model shared by radiologist and pulmonologist

    Objectives: To apply the Delphi exercise with iterative involvement of radiologists and pulmonologists with the aim of defining a structured reporting template for high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of patients with fibrosing lung disease (FLD). Methods: The writing committee selected the HRCT criteria\ue2\u80\u94the Delphi items\ue2\u80\u94for rating from both radiology panelists (RP) and pulmonology panelists (PP). The Delphi items were first rated by RPs as \ue2\u80\u9cessential\ue2\u80\u9d, \ue2\u80\u9coptional\ue2\u80\u9d, or \ue2\u80\u9cnot relevant\ue2\u80\u9d. The items rated \ue2\u80\u9cessential\ue2\u80\u9d by < 80% of the RP were selected for the PP rating. The format of reporting was rated by both RP and PP. Results: A total of 42 RPs and 12 PPs participated to the survey. In both Delphi round 1 and 2, 10/27 (37.7%) items were rated \ue2\u80\u9cessential\ue2\u80\u9d by more than 80% of RP. The remaining 17/27 (63.3%) items were rated by the PP in round 3, with 2/17 items (11.7%) rated \ue2\u80\u9cessential\ue2\u80\u9d by the PP. PP proposed additional items for conclusion domain, which were rated by RPs in the fourth round. Poor consensus was observed for the format of reporting. Conclusions: This study provides a template for structured report of FLD that features essential items as agreed by expert thoracic radiologists and pulmonologists

    Performance Assessment in Fingerprinting and Multi Component Quantitative NMR Analyses

    An interlaboratory comparison (ILC) was organized with the aim to set up quality control indicators suitable for multicomponent quantitative analysis by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A total of 36 NMR data sets (corresponding to 1260 NMR spectra) were produced by 30 participants using 34 NMR spectrometers. The calibration line method was chosen for the quantification of a five-component model mixture. Results show that quantitative NMR is a robust quantification tool and that 26 out of 36 data sets resulted in statistically equivalent calibration lines for all considered NMR signals. The performance of each laboratory was assessed by means of a new performance index (named Qp-score) which is related to the difference between the experimental and the consensus values of the slope of the calibration lines. Laboratories endowed with a Qp-score falling within the suitable acceptability range are qualified to produce NMR spectra that can be considered statistically equivalent in terms of relative intensities of the signals. In addition, the specific response of nuclei to the experimental excitation/relaxation conditions was addressed by means of the parameter named NR. NR is related to the difference between the theoretical and the consensus slopes of the calibration lines and is specific for each signal produced by a well-defined set of acquisition parameters
