    Environmental impact of early palaeometallurgy: pollen and geochemical analysis

    International audienceInterdisciplinary research was carried out in mid-level mountain areas in France with the aim of documenting historical mining and smelting activities by means of pollen and geochemical analyses. These investigations were made on cores collected in French peatlands in the Morvan (northern Massif Central), at Mont Lozère (southern Massif Central) and in the Basque Country (Pyrénées). Different periods of mining were recognised from Prehistory to modern times through the presence of anthropogenic lead in peat. Some of these were already known from archaeological dates or historical archives, especially for mediaeval and modern periods. However prehistoric ancient mining activities, as early as the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1700 b.c.), were also discovered. They had all led to modifications in plant cover, probably related in part to forest clearance necessary to supply energy for mining and smelting

    Family physicians\u27 professional identity formation: a study protocol to explore impression management processes in institutional academic contexts.

    BACKGROUND: Despite significant differences in terms of medical training and health care context, the phenomenon of medical students\u27 declining interest in family medicine has been well documented in North America and in many other developed countries as well. As part of a research program on family physicians\u27 professional identity formation initiated in 2007, the purpose of the present investigation is to examine in-depth how family physicians construct their professional image in academic contexts; in other words, this study will allow us to identify and understand the processes whereby family physicians with an academic appointment seek to control the ideas others form about them as a professional group, i.e. impression management. METHODS/DESIGN: The methodology consists of a multiple case study embedded in the perspective of institutional theory. Four international cases from Canada, France, Ireland and Spain will be conducted; the \u22case\u22 is the medical school. Four levels of analysis will be considered: individual family physicians, interpersonal relationships, family physician professional group, and organization (medical school). Individual interviews and focus groups with academic family physicians will constitute the main technique for data generation, which will be complemented with a variety of documentary sources. Discourse techniques, more particularly rhetorical analysis, will be used to analyze the data gathered. Within- and cross-case analysis will then be performed. DISCUSSION: This empirical study is strongly grounded in theory and will contribute to the scant body of literature on family physicians\u27 professional identity formation processes in medical schools. Findings will potentially have important implications for the practice of family medicine, medical education and health and educational policies

    Pharmacokinetics of coenzyme Q10 in combination with omega-3 monoglycerides: a randomized, triple blind, crossover clinical trial

    La coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), aussi connue sous le nom d'ubiquinone, est une molécule lipidique endogène. Cet antioxydant est impliqué dans la synthèse de l'ATP. Cependant, sa production diminue avec le vieillissement et le stress oxydatif. De plus, son absorption est limitée lors de la prise de suppléments. Notre équipe a démontré antérieurement que les monoglycérides oméga-3 (MAG-OM3) augmentent les concentrations plasmatiques d'OM3 dans la phase d'absorption. Ainsi, puisque la CoQ10 est liposoluble, nous émettons l'hypothèse que son absorption serait augmentée lorsqu'elle est administrée avec des MAG-OM3. L’objectif de cette étude était de déterminer la pharmacocinétique de la CoQ10 lorsqu'elle est administrée en combinaison à des MAG-OM3, à l'huile de riz ou seule (poudre). Cette étude était de type chassé-croisé, randomisé, en triple insu. Quinze hommes et quinze femmes ont consommé dans un ordre aléatoire une dose des trois suppléments suivants : CoQ10 + MAG-OM3, CoQ10 + huile de riz, et CoQ10 seule, avec un minimum de 7 jours entre la prise de chaque supplément. Des échantillons sanguins ont été prélevés avant (t = 0) et 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 24 et 48 h après la prise du supplément. Les concentrations plasmatiques de CoQ10 totale ont été analysées par chromatographie liquide ultra-haute performance couplée à un spectromètre de masse en tandem. Les participants avaient 26,1 ± 4,8 ans et les caractéristiques anthropométriques étaient similaires entre les hommes et les femmes. Les concentrations de CoQ10 étaient significativement plus élevées pendant la phase d'absorption (aire sous la courbe (AUC) 0-6h) et jusqu'à 48 heures après la prise d'une dose unique lorsqu'elle était combinée à une huile par rapport à la CoQ10 seule. Par ailleurs, l’AUC 0-6h de la CoQ10 normalisée au cholestérol était trois fois plus élevée lorsqu'elle était administrée avec MAG-OM3 que lorsqu'elle était administrée seule. Nos résultats soutiennent que les MAG-OM3 augmentent les concentrations de COQ10/cholestérol dans la phase d'absorption.Abstract: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an endogenous lipid molecule, also known as ubiquinone. It is an antioxidant and it is involved in ATP synthesis in the mitochondria. However, its production decreases with aging and with the occurrence of oxidative stress. Furthermore, when provided as a supplement, its absorption is very limited. We previously reported that monoglycerides omega-3 (MAG-OM3) improve OM3 plasma concentrations in the absorption phase. Since CoQ10 is liposoluble, we hypothesized that its absorption is increased when administered with MAG-OM3. The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of coenzyme Q10 when combined to MAG-OM3, rice oil, or alone (powder). This study was a randomized triple blind crossover study. Fifteen men and fifteen women were recruited. They consumed in a random order a single oral dose of the three following supplements: CoQ10 + MAG-OM3, CoQ10 + rice oil and CoQ10 alone (in powder). There was a minimum of 7 days washout period between each supplement. Blood samples were collected before the supplement intake (t = 0) and thereafter 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 24 and 48h after the supplement intake. Plasma total CoQ10 concentrations were analyzed on ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer. Participants were 26.1 ± 4.8 years and anthropometric characteristics were similar between men and women. CoQ10 concentration was significantly higher in the absorption phase (area under the curve (AUC) 0-6h) and up to 48 h after the single dose intake when combined to an oil (rice or MAG-OM3) compared to CoQ10 alone. However, after correcting CoQ10 concentration for plasma cholesterol, CoQ10 AUC 0-6h was 3 times higher when provided with MAG-OM3 compared to when administered in powder. Our results support that MAG-OM3 improve COQ10/cholesterol concentrations in the absorption phase

    Medieval Lead Smelting on the Mont Lozère, Southern France

    International audienceDuring a survey on the western part of the Mont Lozère (Cévennes National Park), about 50 lead smelting sites were mapped. Pluridisciplinary research activities were engaged: archaeology with small excavations to check extension of sites, presence of archaeological levels, ...; survey around the granitic massif on mineralisations and mining traces; characterization, typology of metallurgical wastes (slags, lining, ...); lead isotopes on mineralisation, slag, soil, plant, ...; palynology and geochemistry on core collectedin peatland.Five radiocarbon dates on charcoal linked to slags gave a medieval age (between 985 and 1277 AD). All investigated sites show the same slag typology. The main facies are a black one, often vitreous, and a grey one, white coated, with bigger Pb prills. Chemical data have to be interpreted as complex genesis for slag, i.e.for smelting process: participation of arena, addition of iron (oxydes?), lime, ... but the signification of the different slag facies is not yet elucidated.Lead isotope data are in agreement with exploitation of mineralisations located in the S-SW border of Mont Lozère Granite but not with exploitation of mineralisations located in northern one.A new unexpected conclusion resulted from results on a peat core: another period of leadsmelting, with the same chemical and Pb isotopic characters occured during late La Tène
