    Uses and management of saltmarshes: A global survey

    Saltmarshes are important coastal fringe ecosystems supporting a myriad of coastal uses and users. However, saltmarshes have undergone a significant period of global decline, losing 25%–50% of their coverage due to a range of drivers, but mainly as a result of anthropogenic pressures and land-use change. While the value of these coastal systems to society is recognised, global data are fragmented, patchy, and often restricted to local case studies. There is currently no comprehensive understanding of the global variation of ecosystem services, benefits and management practices available. This pioneering study addresses this by investigating the socio-ecological dimension of global variation in ecosystem service provision, and how this is being managed by and for different saltmarsh users. Through a global online questionnaire survey (n = 438) targeting professional saltmarsh researchers and practitioners representing 40 countries across 5 continents, this paper presents an overview of saltmarsh ecosystem services, key drivers influencing management and the variation in factors that influence them. Analysis indicates considerable variation, with geographical location (‘continent’) being the most common moderator, influencing perceptions of saltmarshes, the prioritisation of ecosystem services and management perceptions. Finally, the paper presents a series of recommendations, including the development of an interdisciplinary, international research programme to support restoration and conservation of saltmarshes worldwide

    Socio-cultural dimensions of marine spatial planning

    Bringing together the complex social and cultural dimensions of marine spatial planning (MSP), this chapter examines how these two terms are applied (or not) in the context of MSP. Global marine and coastal planning continues to recognise that human activities must be considered in order to account for the dynamic interconnectivity between society and the sea. Many research fields explore the importance of the sea to identity, sense of place, health or community cohesion. However, these draw on a range of different assumptions to mainstream marine science and struggle to be incorporated into traditional policy processes, environmental assessments and large-scale planning processes. In this chapter, we interrogate the concept of ‘socio-cultural’, examining how this is being defined and applied across the MSP landscape

    Quality assurance in UK nursing education: public protection in the era of streamlined assessment.

    This paper describes recent reforms of quality assurance (QA) for the education of nurses, midwives and health visitors and reports qualitative findings from a study of how they are working out in practice. This study reported whether the stakeholders consider the system to be adequate for the principal aim of public protection. Using a postal survey and interviews, QA in nursing, midwifery and health visiting is compared and contrasted in the four countries of the United Kingdom. Issues of subjectivity versus objectivity in decision making over QA of nursing, midwifery and health visiting education and the extent to which these processes are rigorous arose. There is an inverse relationship between the number of higher education institutions in a country and the extent to which nursing, midwifery and health visiting QA personnel, responsible for conducting QA events, become involved with those institutions in offering advice and support. Generally speaking, where the changes have been greatest, satisfaction with the QA processes is lowest. Dissatisfaction was only expressed with processes and most likely arose from resistance to change but these are early days in the operation of the new QA procedures

    ZMYND11 variants are a novel cause of centrotemporal and generalised epilepsies with neurodevelopmental disorder

    ZMYND11 is the critical gene in chromosome 10p15.3 microdeletion syndrome, a syndromic cause of intellectual disability. The phenotype of ZMYND11 variants has recently been extended to autism and seizures. We expand on the epilepsy phenotype of 20 individuals with pathogenic variants in ZMYND11. We obtained clinical descriptions of sixteen new and nine published individuals, plus detailed case history of two children. New individuals were identified through GeneMatcher, ClinVar and the European Network for Therapies in Rare Epilepsy (NETRE). Genetic evaluation was performed using gene panels or exome sequencing; variants were classified using American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) criteria. Individuals with ZMYND11 associated epilepsy fell into three groups: (i) atypical benign partial epilepsy or idiopathic focal epilepsy (n=8); (ii) generalised epilepsies/infantile epileptic encephalopathy (n=4); (iii) unclassified (n=8). Seizure prognosis ranged from spontaneous remission to drug resistant. Neurodevelopmental deficits were invariable. Dysmorphic features were variable. Variants were distributed across the gene and mostly de novo with no precise genotype-phenotype correlation. ZMYND11 is one of a small group of chromatin reader genes associated in the pathogenesis of epilepsy, and specifically ABPE. More detailed epilepsy descriptions of larger cohorts and functional studies might reveal genotype-phenotype correlation. The epileptogenic mechanism may be linked to interaction with histone H3.3
