Vegetation history and climatic fluctuations on a transect along the Dead Sea west shore and impact on past societies over the last 3500 years.
This study represents the vegetation history of the last 3500 years and conducts an analysis of the climatic fluctuations on a 75 km long transect on the western Dead Sea shore. Palynological and sedimentological data are available from six cores near Mount Sedom, Ein Boqueq, and Ein Gedi and from outcrops near Ze'elim and Ein Feshkha. The comparison of the pollen data with the lake levels shows synchronous trends. During the Middle Bronze Age, Iron Age and Hellenistic to Byzantine Period the high lake level of the Dead Sea signals an increase in precipitation. Contemporaneously, values of cultivated plants indicate an increase in agriculture. Lake level is low during the Late Bronze Age, within the Iron Age and at the end of the Byzantine period, indicating dry periods when all pds show a decrease of cultivated plants. Forest regeneration led by drought-resistant pines is observed in all pollen diagrams (pds) following the agricultural decline in the Byzantine period and, in the pds near Ein Boqeq, Ze'elim and Ein Feshkha, during the late Iron Age. The modern vegetation gradient is reflected in the palaeo-records: a stronger expansion of Mediterranean vegetation and cultivated plants in the northern sites is recognisable
Efficient Stochastic Simulations of Complex Reaction Networks on Surfaces
Surfaces serve as highly efficient catalysts for a vast variety of chemical
reactions. Typically, such surface reactions involve billions of molecules
which diffuse and react over macroscopic areas. Therefore, stochastic
fluctuations are negligible and the reaction rates can be evaluated using rate
equations, which are based on the mean-field approximation. However, in case
that the surface is partitioned into a large number of disconnected microscopic
domains, the number of reactants in each domain becomes small and it strongly
fluctuates. This is, in fact, the situation in the interstellar medium, where
some crucial reactions take place on the surfaces of microscopic dust grains.
In this case rate equations fail and the simulation of surface reactions
requires stochastic methods such as the master equation. However, in the case
of complex reaction networks, the master equation becomes infeasible because
the number of equations proliferates exponentially. To solve this problem, we
introduce a stochastic method based on moment equations. In this method the
number of equations is dramatically reduced to just one equation for each
reactive species and one equation for each reaction. Moreover, the equations
can be easily constructed using a diagrammatic approach. We demonstrate the
method for a set of astrophysically relevant networks of increasing complexity.
It is expected to be applicable in many other contexts in which problems that
exhibit analogous structure appear, such as surface catalysis in nanoscale
systems, aerosol chemistry in stratospheric clouds and genetic networks in
cells
Quantifying the connectivity of a network: The network correlation function method
Networks are useful for describing systems of interacting objects, where the
nodes represent the objects and the edges represent the interactions between
them. The applications include chemical and metabolic systems, food webs as
well as social networks. Lately, it was found that many of these networks
display some common topological features, such as high clustering, small
average path length (small world networks) and a power-law degree distribution
(scale free networks). The topological features of a network are commonly
related to the network's functionality. However, the topology alone does not
account for the nature of the interactions in the network and their strength.
Here we introduce a method for evaluating the correlations between pairs of
nodes in the network. These correlations depend both on the topology and on the
functionality of the network. A network with high connectivity displays strong
correlations between its interacting nodes and thus features small-world
functionality. We quantify the correlations between all pairs of nodes in the
network, and express them as matrix elements in the correlation matrix. From
this information one can plot the correlation function for the network and to
extract the correlation length. The connectivity of a network is then defined
as the ratio between this correlation length and the average path length of the
network. Using this method we distinguish between a topological small world and
a functional small world, where the latter is characterized by long range
correlations and high connectivity. Clearly, networks which share the same
topology, may have different connectivities, based on the nature and strength
of their interactions. The method is demonstrated on metabolic networks, but
can be readily generalized to other types of networks.Comment: 10 figure
Stochastic Analysis of Dimerization Systems
The process of dimerization, in which two monomers bind to each other and
form a dimer, is common in nature. This process can be modeled using rate
equations, from which the average copy numbers of the reacting monomers and of
the product dimers can then be obtained. However, the rate equations apply only
when these copy numbers are large. In the limit of small copy numbers the
system becomes dominated by fluctuations, which are not accounted for by the
rate equations. In this limit one must use stochastic methods such as direct
integration of the master equation or Monte Carlo simulations. These methods
are computationally intensive and rarely succumb to analytical solutions. Here
we use the recently introduced moment equations which provide a highly
simplified stochastic treatment of the dimerization process. Using this
approach, we obtain an analytical solution for the copy numbers and reaction
rates both under steady state conditions and in the time-dependent case. We
analyze three different dimerization processes: dimerization without
dissociation, dimerization with dissociation and hetero-dimer formation. To
validate the results we compare them with the results obtained from the master
equation in the stochastic limit and with those obtained from the rate
equations in the deterministic limit. Potential applications of the results in
different physical contexts are discussed.Comment: 10 figure
Dephasing of a particle in a dissipative environment
The motion of a particle in a ring of length L is influenced by a dirty metal
environment whose fluctuations are characterized by a short correlation
distance . We analyze the induced decoherence process, and compare
the results with those obtained in the opposing Caldeira-Leggett limit (). A proper definition of the dephasing factor that does not depend on a
vague semiclassical picture is employed. Some recent Monte-Carlo results about
the effect of finite temperatures on "mass renormalization" in this system are

Improved perturbation theory in the vortex liquids state of type II superconductors
We develop an optimized perturbation theory for the Ginzburg - Landau
description of thermal fluctuations effects in the vortex liquids. Unlike the
high temperature expansion which is asymptotic, the optimized expansion is
convergent. Radius of convergence on the lowest Landau level is in
2D and in 3D. It allows a systematic calculation of magnetization
and specific heat contributions due to thermal fluctuations of vortices in
strongly type II superconductors to a very high precision. The results are in
good agreement with existing Monte Carlo simulations and experiments.
Limitations of various nonperturbative and phenomenological approaches are
noted. In particular we show that there is no exact intersection point of the

Distribution and Extinction of Ungulates during the Holocene of the Southern Levant
BACKGROUND: The southern Levant (Israel, Palestinian Authority and Jordan) has been continuously and extensively populated by succeeding phases of human cultures for the past 15,000 years. The long human impact on the ancient landscape has had great ecological consequences, and has caused continuous and accelerating damage to the natural environment. The rich zooarchaeological data gathered at the area provide a unique opportunity to reconstruct spatial and temporal changes in wild species distribution, and correlate them with human demographic changes. METHODOLOGY: Zoo-archaeological data (382 animal bone assemblages from 190 archaeological sites) from various time periods, habitats and landscapes were compared. The bone assemblages were sorted into 12 major cultural periods. Distribution maps showing the presence of each ungulate species were established for each period. CONCLUSIONS: The first major ungulate extinction occurred during the local Iron Age (1,200-586 BCE), a period characterized by significant human population growth. During that time the last of the largest wild ungulates, the hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus), aurochs (Bos primigenius) and the hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) became extinct, followed by a shrinking distribution of forest-dwelling cervids. A second major wave of extinction occurred only in the 19th and 20th centuries CE. Furthermore, a negative relationship was found between the average body mass of ungulate species that became extinct during the Holocene and their extinction date. It is thus very likely that the intensified human activity through habitat destruction and uncontrolled hunting were responsible for the two major waves of ungulate extinction in the southern Levant during the late Holocene

as expetativas e os projetos que comportam para os seus futuros e que incluem,
ou não, este país. Temos em conta, especialmente, a forma como essa narrativa
transporta sentidos identitários decorrentes das formas de relacionamento intercultural
e político entre Portugal e Brasil e formas de cooperação implícitas, assim
como mapas representacionais acerca dos lugares de eleição para desenvolvimento
de carreiras científicas e académicas. A nossa pesquisa incide sobre as informações
recolhidas através de um inquérito por questionário e entrevistas realizadas
junto de estudantes e bolseiros brasileiros em Portugal.We present an exploratory study that investigated biographical stories of
Brazilians who choose to continue their education or develop research in Portugal.
We sought to find in their experiences explanatory links connecting the
motivations and processes that bring them to Portugal, as well as the expectations
and projects that they hold for the future, which may include, or not, this country.
We take into account, particularly, the way this narrative carries senses of identity
arising from the forms of intercultural and political relationship between Portugal
and Brazil, as well as implicit forms of cooperation and representations about the
places chosen for the development of scientific and academic careers. Our research
draws on information collected through a survey based on questionnaires and
interviews with Brazilian students and scholarship holders in Portugal.(undefined
Evaluation of a candidate breast cancer associated SNP in ERCC4 as a risk modifier in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. Results from the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/BRCA2 (CIMBA)
Background: In this study we aimed to evaluate the role of a SNP in intron 1 of the ERCC4 gene (rs744154), previously reported to be associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer in the general population, as a breast cancer risk modifier in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. Methods: We have genotyped rs744154 in 9408 BRCA1 and 5632 BRCA2 mutation carriers from the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA) and assessed its association with breast cancer risk using a retrospective weighted cohort approach. Results: We found no evidence of association with breast cancer risk for BRCA1 (per-allele HR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.93–1.04, P=0.5) or BRCA2 (per-allele HR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.89–1.06, P=0.5) mutation carriers. Conclusion: This SNP is not a significant modifier of breast cancer risk for mutation carriers, though weak associations cannot be ruled out.
