    In Search of Social Justice Praxis: A Critical Examination of Senior Student Affairs Officers\u27 Leadership Practices

    As the highest ranking administrators in divisions of student affairs, Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAOs) have the substantial opportunity to perform leadership in a manner which realizes social justice processes and goals. Framed by critical postmodernism (Tierney & Rhoads, 1993), this study uses educational criticism and connoisseurship (Eisner, 1976, 1998, 2002) to document the social justice leadership practices of two SSAOs. In depth narratives give rich descriptions of the nuances of social justice leadership as enacted by the SSAOs. Critical interpretation and evaluation of these practices is woven throughout the study. Themes relevant for the field of higher education in student affairs are then presented. Stemming from the narratives, informed questions are offered which can be used to frame further research related to the topic of social justice leadership praxis in higher education. Additionally, implications for SSAO social justice leadership are offered, including the need for better training and the intentional resistance to an evolving neoliberal technocratism adversely impacting social justice aspirations in higher education

    White Clauses in Two Historically White Fraternities: Documenting the Past & Exploring Future Implications

    This study offers a critical analysis of the appearance and subsequent removal of white clauses in historically white fraternities (HWFs) using the theoretical framework of Critical Race Theory. Archival records are examined to document the first men of color in two HWFs. Data are then presented using phenomenological research methods from interviews with men who were members of these HWFs at the time of racial integration. Themes of colorblindness and internal and external influence on integration are presented followed by implications for fraternity/sorority communities, campus based professionals, and inter/national organization staff

    Progressive education is widely admired and rarely implemented in schools. In this commentary, a group of educators—K-8 teachers and administrators and teacher education students and faculty—discuss their shared journey as they come together to study their own practice in schools committed to this model of teaching and learning. While acknowledging the reality that progressive education is most often found in in areas of economic privilege, they nonetheless challenge teachers to engage in “thoughtful participation, description, and dialogue,” in some fashion, as a means of counteracting the demands of the current reform climate

To effectively study these complex and evolving phenomena, methods that enable autonomous platforms to detect and respond to targeted phenomena are required. Such capabilities allow for directed sensing and water sample acquisition in the most relevant and informative locations, as compared against static grid surveys. To meet this need, we have designed algorithms for autonomous underwater vehicles that detect oceanic features in real time and direct vehicle and sampling behaviors as dictated by research objectives. These methods have successfully been applied in a series of field programs to study a range of phenomena such as harmful algal blooms, coastal upwelling fronts, and microbial processes in open-ocean eddies.     Resolved velocity profiles of galactic winds at Cosmic Noon

    We study the kinematics of the interstellar medium (ISM) viewed "down the barrel" in 20 gravitationally lensed galaxies during Cosmic Noon (z=1.53.5z=1.5 - 3.5). We use moderate-resolution spectra (R4000R\sim4000) from Keck/ESI and Magellan/MagE to spectrally resolve the ISM absorption in these galaxies into \sim10 independent elements and use double Gaussian fits to quantify the velocity structure of the gas. We find that the bulk motion of gas in this galaxy sample is outflowing, with average velocity centroid \left=-141 km\,s1^{-1} (±111\pm111 km\,s1^{-1} scatter) measured with respect to the systemic redshift. 16 out of the 20 galaxies exhibit a clear positive skewness, with a blueshifted tail extending to 500\sim -500 km\,s1^{-1}. We examine scaling relations in outflow velocities with galaxy stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR), finding correlations consistent with a momentum-driven wind scenario. Our measured outflow velocities are also comparable to those reported for FIRE-2 and TNG50 cosmological simulations at similar redshift and galaxy properties. We also consider implications for interpreting results from lower-resolution spectra. We demonstrate that while velocity centroids are accurately recovered, the skewness, velocity width, and probes of high velocity gas (e.g., v95v_{95}) are subject to large scatter and biases at lower resolution. We find that R1700R\gtrsim1700 is required for accurate results for the gas kinematics of our sample.     Intercalibration of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at start-up

    Calibration of the relative response of the individual channels of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector was accomplished, before installation, with cosmic ray muons and test beams. One fourth of the calorimeter was exposed to a beam of high energy electrons and the relative calibration of the channels, the intercalibration, was found to be reproducible to a precision of about 0.3%. Additionally, data were collected with cosmic rays for the entire ECAL barrel during the commissioning phase. By comparing the intercalibration constants obtained with the electron beam data with those from the cosmic ray data, it is demonstrated that the latter provide an intercalibration precision of 1.5% over most of the barrel ECAL. The best intercalibration precision is expected to come from the analysis of events collected in situ during the LHC operation. Through their influence on nutrient supply to the euphotic zone, open-ocean eddies impact the magnitude of primary production and its spatial and temporal distributions. It is important to gain a deeper understanding of the microbial ecology of marine ecosystems under the influence of eddy physics with the aid of advanced technologies. In March and April 2018, we deployed autonomous underwater and surface vehicles in a cyclonic eddy in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre to investigate the variability of the microbial community in the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) layer. One long-range autonomous underwater vehicle (LRAUV) carrying a third-generation Environmental Sample Processor (3G-ESP) autonomously tracked and sampled the DCM layer for four days without surfacing. The sampling LRAUV's vertical position in the DCM layer was maintained by locking onto the isotherm corresponding to the chlorophyll peak. The vehicle ran on tight circles while drifting with the eddy current. This mode of operation enabled a quasi-Lagrangian time series focused on sampling the temporal variation of the DCM population. A companion LRAUV surveyed a cylindrical volume around the sampling LRAUV to monitor spatial and temporal variation in contextual water column properties.     Astrophysically Triggered Searches for Gravitational Waves: Status and Prospects

    In gravitational-wave detection, special emphasis is put onto searches that focus on cosmic events detected by other types of astrophysical observatories. The astrophysical triggers, e.g. from gamma-ray and X-ray satellites, optical telescopes and neutrino observatories, provide a trigger time for analyzing gravitational wave data coincident with the event. In certain cases the expected frequency range, source energetics, directional and progenitor information is also available. Beyond allowing the recognition of gravitational waveforms with amplitudes closer to the noise floor of the detector, these triggered searches should also lead to rich science results even before the onset of Advanced LIGO.     We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors for compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. We present noise spectral density curves for each of the four detectors that operated during these science runs which are representative of the typical performance achieved by the detectors for CBC searches.
