    Body fatness, relative weight and frame size in young adults

    1. Body-weight, body height, knee width, wrist width and skinfold measurements were made on males (n 139) and females (n 167) in three age-groups (20–22, 25–27 and 30–32 years). Percentage of body fal was calculated from skinfold thicknesses using regression equations according to Durnin & Womersley (1974), Three indices of relative weight were calculated: W/H2, W/Hp and W/Ŵ, where W is body-weight, H is body height, p is the exponent that made the index of relative weight independent of height and W is the weight, estimated from body height and frame size. 2. The standard error of the estimate of body-weight was only reduced by 5% in males and by 13% in females when, in addition to body height, knee width was taken into account.The addition of wrist width did not improve the accuracy of estimation of body-weight in either sex. Therefore in further analyses W was estimated from body height and knee width. In the present population the exponent p was 1·7 in males and 1·6 in females. 3. The correlations between the percentage of body fat and the indices, W/H2, W/HP, and W/Ŵ, were all very similar, being approximately 0·8 in both sexes. 4. A positive relationship was observed between percentage of body fat and knee width in females, which may be explained by an artifact of measurement. 5. In conclusion it can be stated that the accuracy of estimation of percentage of body fat was not improved when the index of relative weight was adjusted for knee width or wrist width in the present population. The W/H2was the most preferable of the three indices which were calculated

    Are older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain less active than older adults without pain? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

    Objective: To compare the overall levels of physical activity of older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain and asymptomatic controls. Review Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using a Cochrane methodology and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Major electronic databases were searched from inception until December 2012, including the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EBSCO, EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, PsycINFO, and the international prospective register of systematic reviews. In addition, citation chasing was undertaken, and key authors were contacted. Eligibility criteria were established around participants used and outcome measures focusing on daily physical activity. A meta-analysis was conducted on appropriate studies. Results: Eight studies met the eligibility criteria, four of these reported a statistically lower level of physical activity in the older adult sampl e with chronic pain compared with the asymptomatic group. It was possible to perform a non-heterogeneous meta-analysis on five studies. This established that 1,159 older adults with chronic pain had a significantly lower level of physical activity (−0.20, confidence interval 95% = −0.34 to −0.06, p = 0.004) compared with 576 without chronic pain. Conclusion: Older adults with chronic pain appear to be less active than asymptomatic controls. Although this difference was small, it is likely to be clinically meaningful. It is imperative that clinicians encourage older people with chronic pain to remain active as physical activity is a central non-pharmacological strategy in the management of chronic pain and is integral for healthy aging. Future research should prioritize the use of objective measurement of physical activity

    A systematic review of changes in women’s physical activity before and during pregnancy and the postnatal period

    Objectives: To determine the magnitude and type of naturally occuring physical activity changes in women around the time of pregnancy. Background: This systematic review synthesises the results of studies examining naturally occurring physical activity in women before they become pregnant and the magnitude and type of changes during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Methods: Electronic databases were searched for relevant articles and PRISMA guidelines for selection of articles were used. Only studies examining naturally occurring, non-intervention changes in regular activity levels were included. The quality assessment was based on protocols of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Of the initial 720 titles, 24 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final review. Results: Compared to pre-pregnancy, the magnitude of physical activity decreased over the course of pregnancy and postnatally and the types of activities tended to be of lesser intensity than pre-pregnancy. The quality of the research was varied; methodological limitations included using subjective methods of assessment of physical activity (9/24), failing to report reliabilities or validity of measures used (8/24), no information on parity (13/24) or level of fitness prior to pregnancy (11/24). Conclusion: The evidence suggests a marked decrease in the amount and type of moderate to strenuous physical activity during the transition to motherhood, which does not always increase again postpartum. Patient education targeting specific physical activities at regular intervals during and after pregnancy to improve long-term maternal health is necessary

    Validating MOSPA questionnaire for measuring physical activity in Pakistani women

    BACKGROUND: Precise measurements of activity at a population level are important for monitoring trends and evaluating health promotion strategies. Few studies have assessed the measurement of physical activity in developing countries. The aim of this study was to validate the MOSPA (Monica Optional Study of Physical Activity) questionnaire which was developed for the WHO-Monitoring trends and determinants of cardiovasculr disease (MONICA) study sites. METHODS: The MOSPA questionnaire assesses energy expendtiture (EE) related to physical activity (employment, household work, transportation, and leisure time) over a one year period. This questionnaire has been described in the manuscript as the long term (LT) questionnaire. An adapted short term (ST) 5 day questionnaire was developed to assess convergent validity. Questionnaire data were compared with physical activity EE estimates from a Caltrac accelerometer and with body composition measures (height, weight and bioelectrical impedance) in 50 women from the Aga Khan University (AKU) hospital antenatal clinics, Pakistan. Other forms of EE i.e. resting EE and thermic effect of food were not assessd in this study. RESULTS: Subjects were aged 26 ± 3.8 years and were 16.1 ± 6.7 weeks pregnant. Their average weight was 58.8 ± 10.7 Kg. The average EE/day assessed by the Caltrac accelerometer, was 224 kcal and by MOSPA LT questionnaire it was 404 kcal. The questionnaires and Caltrac data were reasonably well correlated: r = 0.51 and r = 0.60 (P < 0.01) for LT and ST questionnaires respectively. Energy expenditure from questionnaire data was not correlated with body composition measures. CONCLUSION: The MOSPA questionnaire is useful in assessing physical activity levels in a sedentary population over a one year period

    Association between diet-quality scores, adiposity, total cholesterol and markers of nutritional status in European adults: findings from the Food4Me study

    Diet-quality scores (DQS), which are developed across the globe, are used to define adherence to specific eating patterns and have been associated with risk of coronary heart disease and type-II diabetes. We explored the association between five diet-quality scores (Healthy Eating Index,HEI; Alternate Healthy Eating Index, AHEI; MedDietScore, MDS; PREDIMED Mediterranean DietScore, P-MDS; Dutch Healthy Diet-Index, DHDI) and markers of metabolic health (anthropometry,objective physical activity levels (PAL), and dried blood spot total cholesterol (TC), total carotenoids,and omega-3 index) in the Food4Me cohort, using regression analysis. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire. Participants (n= 1480) were adults recruited from seven European Union (EU) countries. Overall, women had higher HEI and AHEI than men (p< 0.05), and scores varied significantly between countries. For all DQS, higher scores were associated with lower body mass index, lower waist-to-height ratio and waist circumference, and higher total carotenoids and omega-3-index (p trends < 0.05). Higher HEI, AHEI, DHDI, and P-MDS scores were associated with increased daily PAL, moderate and vigorous activity, and reduced sedentary behaviour (p trend < 0.05). We observed no association between DQS and TC. To conclude,higher DQS, which reflect better dietary patterns, were associated with markers of better nutritional status and metabolic health

    Short-Term Exercise Training Does Not Stimulate Skeletal Muscle ATP Synthesis in Relatives of Humans With Type 2 Diabetes

    OBJECTIVE-We tested the hypothesis that short-term exercise training improves hereditary insulin resistance by stimulating ATP synthesis and investigated associations With gene polymorphisms. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-We studied 24 nono-bese first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients and 12 control subjects at rest, and 48 h after three bouts of exercise. In addition to measurements of oxygen uptake and insulin sensitivity (oral glucose tolerance test), ectopic lipids and mitochondrial ATP synthesis were assessed using H-1 and P-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy, respectively. They were genotyped for polymorphisms in genes regulating mitochondrial function, PPARGC1A (rs8192678) and NDUFB6 (rs540467). RESULTS-Relatives had slightly lower (P = 0.012) insulin sensitivity than control subjects. In control subjects, ATP synthase flux rose by 18% (P = 0.0001), being 23% higher (P = 0.002) than that in relatives after exercise training. Relatives responding to exercise training with increased ATP synthesis (+19%, P = 0.009) showed improved insulin sensitivity (P = 0.009) compared with those whose insulin sensitivity did not improve. A polymorphism in the NDUFB6 gene from respiratory chain complex I related to ATP synthesis (P = 0.02) and insulin Sensitivity response to exercise training (P = 0.05). ATP synthase flux correlated with O-2 uptake and insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS-The ability of short-term exercise to stimulate ATP production distinguished individuals with improved insulin sensitivity from those whose insulin sensitivity did not improve. lit addition, the NDUFB6 gene polymorphism appeared to modulate this adaptation.     Brown adipose tissue activity after a high-calorie meal in humans.

    BACKGROUND: Studies in rodents have shown that brown adipose tissue (BAT) is activated on food intake, thereby reducing metabolic efficiency. OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated whether a single high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich meal activates BAT in lean human adults. DESIGN: BAT activity was studied in 11 lean adult men [age: 23.6 +/- 2.1 y; body mass index (BMI; in kg/m2): 22.4 +/- 2.1] after consumption of a high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich meal (1622 +/- 222 kcal; 78% carbohydrate, 12% P, 10% F). BAT activity during 2 h of mild cold exposure served as a positive control experiment. BAT activity was assessed by [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography-computed tomography. Energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry. RESULTS: Postprandial [18F]FDG uptake was significantly higher in BAT [1.65 +/- 0.99 mean standard uptake value (SUVmean)] than in subcutaneous (0.35 +/- 0.15 SUVmean; P < 0.05) and visceral (0.49 +/- 0.24 SUVmean; P < 0.05) white adipose tissue and liver (0.95 +/- 0.28 SUVmean; P < 0.05). Postprandial BAT activity was lower than cold-induced BAT activity (7.19 +/- 2.09 SUVmean). However, postprandial BAT activity may have been underestimated because of high postprandial [18F]FDG uptake in skeletal muscle compared with cold (1.36 +/- 0.31 compared with 0.59 +/- 0.07 SUVmean, P < 0.05), which reduces [18F]FDG bioavailability for BAT and other tissues. No direct relation was found between BAT and diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT). CONCLUSIONS: Glucose uptake in BAT increases after a meal in humans, which indicates a role for BAT in reducing metabolic efficiency. However, the quantitative contribution of BAT to DIT relative to other tissues, such as skeletal muscle, remains to be investigated.
