    Exploiting Machine Learning to Subvert Your Spam Filter

    Using statistical machine learning for making security decisions introduces new vulnerabilities in large scale systems. This paper shows how an adversary can exploit statistical machine learning, as used in the SpamBayes spam filter, to render it useless—even if the adversary’s access is limited to only 1 % of the training messages. We further demonstrate a new class of focused attacks that successfully prevent victims from receiving specific email messages. Finally, we introduce two new types of defenses against these attacks.

    Epidemiological, socio-demographic and clinical features of the early phase of the COVID-19 epidemic in Ecuador

    The SARS-CoV-2 virus has spread rapidly around the globe. Nevertheless, there is limited information describing the characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients in Latin America. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 9,468 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in Ecuador. We calculated overall incidence, mortality, case fatality rates, disability adjusted life years, attack and crude mortality rates, as well as relative risk and relative odds of death, adjusted for age, sex and presence of comorbidities. A total of 9,468 positive COVID-19 cases and 474 deaths were included in the analysis. Men accounted for 55.4% (n = 5, 247) of cases and women for 44.6% (n = 4, 221). We found the presence of comorbidities, being male and older than 65 years were important determinants of mortality. Coastal regions were most affected by COVID-19, with higher mortality rates than the highlands. Fatigue was reported in 53.2% of the patients, followed by headache (43%), dry cough (41.7%), ageusia (37.1%) and anosmia (36.1%). We present an analysis of the burden of COVID-19 in Ecuador. Our findings show that men are at higher risk of dying from COVID-19 than women, and risk increases with age and the presence of comorbidities. We also found that blue-collar workers and the unemployed are at greater risk of dying. These early observations offer clinical insights for the medical community to help improve patient care and for public health officials to strengthen Ecuador’s response to the outbreak

    Análise da estrutura fatorial da versão em português da Escala de Auto-Silenciamento

    This study focuses on the adaptation of the Portuguese version of the Escala de Autosilenciamiento [EAS, for its Portuguese acronym] (Neves, 2005) that has been designed to assess the use of cognitive schemas for self silencing in intimate relationships. Participants were 371 women with a mean age of 22.36 years (SD=2.69; Min=18; Max=31), who at that time were involved in affective relationships with an average duration of 39.65 months (SD=33.93; Min=10; Max=192).The exploratory factor analysis suggests a factor solution of three factors, where the first factor includes items from the silencing of the sef and divided self subscales. The second factor includes items from the care-giving subscale such as self-sacrifice. And the third factor includes items from the externalized self-perception subscale. Results of the confirmatory factor analysis show reliable global indices of fitness of the model, confirming the quality of the model in terms of adjustment to empirical data (X2/df=1.964, CFI=.862, GFI=.894, RMSEA=.051) compared to the original model. Implications for a further study of the construct validity of the scale are discussed.Este estudo se centra na adaptação da versão em português da Escala de Auto-silenciamento (EAS; Neves, 2005) que está desenhada para avaliar o uso de esquemas cognitivos de auto-silenciamento nas relações íntimas. Neste estudo participaram 371 mulheres, com uma idade média de 22,36 anos (DP = 2,69, mín. = 18, máx. = 31), que nessa época estavam envolvidas em relações afetivas com uma duração média de 39,65 meses. (DP = 33,93, mín. = 0,10; máx. = 192). Uma análise fatorial exploratória posterior sugere uma solução de três fatores, aonde o primeiro fator inclui os itens da sub-escala de silenciamento do self e do self dividido; o segundo inclui os itens da sub-escala de Provisão de cuidados como o auto sacrifício, e o terceiro inclui os itens da sub-escala de auto percepção externalizada. Os resultados da análise fatorial confirmatória mostram índices gerais de adequação confiáveis, o que confirma a qualidade do ajuste do modelo aos dados empíricos (X2/df = 1964, CFI = .862, GFI = 0,894, RMSEA = 0,051) em comparação com a teste original. Analisam-se as implicações para um estudo más profundo da validez de constructo da escala.Este estudio se centra en la adaptación de la versión en portugués de la Escala de Autosilenciamiento (EAS; Neves, 2005) que está diseñada para evaluar el uso de esquemas cognitivos de autosilenciamiento en las relaciones íntimas. En este estudio participaron 371 mujeres, con una edad media de 22,36 años (DP = 2,69, mín. = 18, máx. = 31), que en esa época estaban involucradas en relaciones afectivas con una duración promedio de 39,65 meses. (DP = 33,93, mín. = 0,10; máx. = 192). Un análisis factorial exploratorio posterior sugiere una solución de tres factores, donde el primer factor incluye los ítems de la subescala de silenciamiento del self y del self dividido; el segundo incluye los ítems de la subescala de Provisión de cuidados como el autosacrificio, y el tercero incluye los ítems de la subescala de autopercepción externalizada.     Lichen rehydration in heavy metal polluted environments: Pb modulates the oxidative response of both Ramalina farinacea thalli and its isolated microalgae

    Lichens are adapted to desiccation/rehydration and accumulate heavy metals, which induce ROS especially from the photobiont photosynthetic pigments. Although their mechanisms of abiotic stress tolerance are still to be unravelled, they seem related to symbionts' reciprocal upregulation of antioxidant systems. With the aim to study the effect of Pb on oxidative status during rehydration, the kinetics of intracellular ROS, lipid peroxidation and chlorophyll autofluorescence of whole Ramalina farinacea thalli and its isolated microalgae (Trebouxia TR1 and T. TR9) was recorded. A genetic characterization of the microalgae present in the thalli used was also carried out in order to assess possible correlations among the relative abundance of each phycobiont, their individual physiological responses and that of the entire thallus. Unexpectedly, Pb decreased ROS and lipid peroxidation in thalli and its phycobionts, associated with a lower chlorophyll autofluorescence. Each phycobiont showed a particular pattern, but the oxidative response of the thallus paralleled the TR1's, agreeing with the genetic identification of this strain as the predominant phycobiont. We conclude that: (1) the lichen oxidative behaviour seems to be modulated by the predominant phycobiont and (2) Pb evokes in R. farinacea and its phycobionts strong mechanisms to neutralize its own oxidant effects along with those of rehydration

    O objectivo do presente artigo consiste em procurar transmitir um olhar sociologicamente informado no que concerne à situação portuguesa no domínio das políticas educativas públicas e investigações produzidas relacionadas com o sistema educativo e a (i)migração, ou seja, com a tentativa de construção de uma educação intercultural. Neste sentido, será realizada uma análise descritiva e compreensivo-interpretativa da evolução desta problemática em Portugal desde que a mesma se tornou objecto de reflexão por parte de investigadores/as e políticos nos finais da década de oitenta, início da década de noventa do século XX. Nesta análise, será dada ênfase às investigações e quadros teóricos produzidos e às medidas legislativas e políticas educativas no domínio do tratamento da diferença cultural dentro do sistema educativo português.The aim of this article consists in attempting to transmit a sociologically informed view in what the Portuguese situation in the field of public policies and research related to the educational system and (im)migration are concerned, that is, in attempting to construct an intercultural education. In this way, a descriptive and comprehensiveinterpretative analysis of the evolution of this problem in Portugal will be realized, since the latter became an object of reflection on the part of researchers and politicians towards the end of the 80s, the beginning of the 90s of the XXth century. In this analysis, emphasis will be given on the research and theoretical frameworks produced and on the legislative measures and educational policies in the field of treating cultural difference in the Portuguese educational system

    Llama-Derived Single Domain Antibodies to Build Multivalent, Superpotent and Broadened Neutralizing Anti-Viral Molecules

    For efficient prevention of viral infections and cross protection, simultaneous targeting of multiple viral epitopes is a powerful strategy. Llama heavy chain antibody fragments (VHH) against the trimeric envelope proteins of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (Fusion protein), Rabies virus (Glycoprotein) and H5N1 Influenza (Hemagglutinin 5) were selected from llama derived immune libraries by phage display. Neutralizing VHH recognizing different epitopes in the receptor binding sites on the spikes with affinities in the low nanomolar range were identified for all the three viruses by viral neutralization assays. By fusion of VHH with variable linker lengths, multimeric constructs were made that improved neutralization potencies up to 4,000-fold for RSV, 1,500-fold for Rabies virus and 75-fold for Influenza H5N1. The potencies of the VHH constructs were similar or better than best performing monoclonal antibodies. The cross protection capacity against different viral strains was also improved for all three viruses, both by multivalent (two or three identical VHH) and biparatopic (two different VHH) constructs. By combining a VHH neutralizing RSV subtype A, but not subtype B with a poorly neutralizing VHH with high affinity for subtype B, a biparatopic construct was made with low nanomolar neutralizing potency against both subtypes. Trivalent anti-H5N1 VHH neutralized both Influenza H5N1 clade1 and 2 in a pseudotype assay and was very potent in neutralizing the NIBRG-14 Influenza H5N1 strain with IC50 of 9 picomolar. Bivalent and biparatopic constructs against Rabies virus cross neutralized both 10 different Genotype 1 strains and Genotype 5. The results show that multimerization of VHH fragments targeting multiple epitopes on a viral trimeric spike protein is a powerful tool for anti-viral therapy to achieve "best-in-class" and broader neutralization capacity

    Positive Selection Results in Frequent Reversible Amino Acid Replacements in the G Protein Gene of Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus

    Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is the major cause of lower respiratory tract infections in children under 5 years of age and the elderly, causing annual disease outbreaks during the fall and winter. Multiple lineages of the HRSVA and HRSVB serotypes co-circulate within a single outbreak and display a strongly temporal pattern of genetic variation, with a replacement of dominant genotypes occurring during consecutive years. In the present study we utilized phylogenetic methods to detect and map sites subject to adaptive evolution in the G protein of HRSVA and HRSVB. A total of 29 and 23 amino acid sites were found to be putatively positively selected in HRSVA and HRSVB, respectively. Several of these sites defined genotypes and lineages within genotypes in both groups, and correlated well with epitopes previously described in group A. Remarkably, 18 of these positively selected tended to revert in time to a previous codon state, producing a “flip-flop” phylogenetic pattern. Such frequent evolutionary reversals in HRSV are indicative of a combination of frequent positive selection, reflecting the changing immune status of the human population, and a limited repertoire of functionally viable amino acids at specific amino acid sites

    Blockwise pp-Tampering Attacks on Cryptographic Primitives, Extractors, and Learners

    Austrin, Chung, Mahmoody, Pass and Seth (Crypto\u2714) studied the notion of bitwise pp-tampering attacks over randomized algorithms in which an efficient `virus\u27 gets to control each bit of the randomness with independent probability pp in an online way. The work of Austrin et al. showed how to break certain `privacy primitives\u27 (e.g., encryption, commitments, etc.) through bitwise pp-tampering, by giving a bitwise pp-tampering biasing attack for increasing the average E[f(Un)]E[f(U_n)] of any efficient function f ⁣:{0,1}n[1,+1]f \colon \{0,1\}^n \to [-1,+1] by Ω(pVar[f(Un)])\Omega(p \cdot Var[f(U_n)]) where Var[f(Un)]Var[f(U_n)] is the variance of f(Un)f(U_n). In this work, we revisit and extend the bitwise tampering model of Austrin et al. to blockwise setting, where blocks of randomness becomes tamperable with independent probability pp. Our main result is an efficient blockwise pp-tampering attack to bias the average E[f(X)]E[f(X)] of any efficient function ff mapping arbitrary XX to [1,+1][-1,+1] by Ω(pVar[f(X)])\Omega(p \cdot Var[f(X)]) regardless of how XX is partitioned into individually tamperable blocks X=(X1,,Xn)X=(X_1,\dots,X_n). Relying on previous works, our main biasing attack immediately implies efficient attacks against the privacy primitives as well as seedless multi-source extractors, in a model where the attacker gets to tamper with each block (or source) of the randomness with independent probability pp. Further, we show how to increase the classification error of deterministic learners in the so called `targeted poisoning\u27 attack model under Valiant\u27s adversarial noise. In this model, an attacker has a `target\u27 test data dd in mind and wishes to increase the error of classifying dd while she gets to tamper with each training example with independent probability pp an in an online way

    Molecular Epidemiology and Evolution of Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Human Metapneumovirus

    Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are ubiquitous respiratory pathogens of the Pneumovirinae subfamily of the Paramyxoviridae. Two major surface antigens are expressed by both viruses; the highly conserved fusion (F) protein, and the extremely diverse attachment (G) glycoprotein. Both viruses comprise two genetic groups, A and B. Circulation frequencies of the two genetic groups fluctuate for both viruses, giving rise to frequently observed switching of the predominantly circulating group. Nucleotide sequence data for the F and G gene regions of HRSV and HMPV variants from the UK, the Netherlands, Bangkok and data available from Genbank were used to identify clades of both viruses. Several contemporary circulating clades of HRSV and HMPV were identified by phylogenetic reconstructions. The molecular epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of clades were modelled in parallel. Times of origin were determined and positively selected sites were identified. Sustained circulation of contemporary clades of both viruses for decades and their global dissemination demonstrated that switching of the predominant genetic group did not arise through the emergence of novel lineages each respiratory season, but through the fluctuating circulation frequencies of pre-existing lineages which undergo proliferative and eclipse phases. An abundance of sites were identified as positively selected within the G protein but not the F protein of both viruses. For HRSV, these were discordant with previously identified residues under selection, suggesting the virus can evade immune responses by generating diversity at multiple sites within linear epitopes. For both viruses, different sites were identified as positively selected between genetic groups
