Fact Checking and Information in the Age of Covid
The Covidâ19 pandemic has revealed and accelerated an information crisis as well as a health one. What we discover about Covid 19, how it spreads, to whom and why and how best to mitigate itâall depend on information. The essays in this special section, which this article introduces, explore the importance of information and the fundamental role of fact checkers in understanding how information flows, why mistakes are made, and how to counteract them. Fact checking as an idea and a practice emerged in the early twentyâfirst century, developed as a positive beacon to counteract a growing sense that information could no longer be trusted. Now, more than a decade after its creation, fact checking sits within a far more complex and chaotic media context, and its expertise and understanding has never been so important. We need to understand what fact checkers do because they are grappling with how to tether us to reality
Rebels leading London: the mayoralties of Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson compared
This article compares the mayoralties of the first two directly elected Mayors of London, Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson. The position offers a commanding electoral platform, but weak powers to lead a city regarded as âungovernableâ (Travers 2004). The two mayors had some obvious points of comparison: both were party rebels, mavericks and skilled media operators. Both also used publicity to make up for weak powers, but courted controversy and faced charges of corruption and cronyism. Utilising Hambleton and Sweeting (2004), this article compares their mayoralties in terms of vision, leadership style and policies. Livingstone had a powerful vision that translated into clear policy aims while Johnson was more cautious, shaped by a desire for higher office. In terms of style, Livingstone built coalitions but proved divisive whereas Johnson retained remarkable levels of popularity. Where Livingstone bought experience and skill, Johnson delegated. In policy terms, the two mayors found themselves pushed by their institutional powers towards transport and planning while struggling with deeper issues such as housing. Livingstone introduced the radical congestion charge and a series of symbolic policies. Johnson was far more modest â championing cycling, the 2012 Olympics and avoiding difficult decisions. The two used their office to negotiate, but also challenge, central government. Livingstoneâs rebel mayoralty was a platform for personalised change, Johnsonâs one for personal ambition
Shared reading of children's interactive picture books
We report on a study of children and parents shared reading of interactive printed books. We investigated the differences between books with interactive features and books with expressive typography in order to evaluate which features within a book encouraged interaction between the reading participants and the book. 11 parent and child groups took part in the study that involved three observed reading sessions. From our observations we offer suggestions for the development of books and eBooks to encourage shared reading practices
Implementing the scholarship of teaching and learning in the Community College Office Administration classroom a faculty learning community initiative
The community college enrolls over 40 percent of all higher education undergraduate students (Mullin, 2012). Recent calls for educational reform and demands for accountability within higher education have placed increasing pressure on community colleges to produce learning and increase student success. Professional development has become necessary to assist faculty in improving teaching practice. Faculty learning communities are a faculty development initiative that can contribute to changes in instruction that improve student learning. Those who engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) movement can help improve teaching and/or learning through systematic inquiry into student learning, application of findings to practice, dissemination of results, self-reflection, and peer-review (Cambridge, 2001). In addition, those who engage in the SoTL seek to improve teaching and learning in the classroom and advance the practice of teaching. This study implemented the scholarship of teaching and learning in the Office Administration Department of a large metropolitan area community college through the use of a faculty learning community. This mixed- methods case study captured qualitative data from faculty learning community members through dialogue, audio recordings and surveys. Student participants completed a pretest/post-test assignment through a skills assessment manager instructional technology tool and the results provided quantitative data for the study. The qualitative data were analyzed for common themes and the major findings were that class size and course-delivery method had little effect on student learning. Quantitative data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS software and the findings showed that student learning was impacted through the use of the instructional technology implemented for the study
An atmospheric perspective on North American carbon dioxide exchange: CarbonTracker
We present an estimate of net CO2 exchange between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere across North America for every week in the period 2000 through 2005. This estimate is derived from a set of 28,000 CO2 mole fraction observations in the global atmosphere that are fed into a state-of-the-art data assimilation system for CO2 called CarbonTracker. By design, the surface fluxes produced in CarbonTracker are consistent with the recent history of CO2 in the atmosphere and provide constraints on the net carbon flux independent from national inventories derived from accounting efforts. We find the North American terrestrial biosphere to have absorbed â0.65 PgC/yr (1 petagram = 10^15 g; negative signs are used for carbon sinks) averaged over the period studied, partly offsetting the estimated 1.85 PgC/yr release by fossil fuel burning and cement manufacturing. Uncertainty on this estimate is derived from a set of sensitivity experiments and places the sink within a range of â0.4 to â1.0 PgC/yr. The estimated sink is located mainly in the deciduous forests along the East Coast (32%) and the boreal coniferous forests (22%). Terrestrial uptake fell to â0.32 PgC/yr during the large-scale drought of 2002, suggesting sensitivity of the contemporary carbon sinks to climate extremes. CarbonTracker results are in excellent agreement with a wide collection of carbon inventories that form the basis of the first North American State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR), to be released in 2007. Women, know your limits: Cultural sexism in academia
Despite the considerable advances of the feminist movement across Western societies, in Universities women are less likely to be promoted, or paid as much as their male colleagues, or even get jobs in the first place. One way in which we can start to reflect on why this might be the case is through hearing the experiences of women academics themselves. Using feminist methodology, this article attempts to unpack and explore just some examples of
âcultural sexismâ which characterise the working lives of many women in British academia.This article uses qualitative methods to describe and make sense of just some of those experiences. In so doing, the argument is also made that the activity of academia is profoundly gendered and this explicit acknowledgement may contribute to our
understanding of the under-representation of women in senior positions
A new, large-bodied omnivorous bat (Noctilionoidea: Mystacinidae) reveals lost morphological and ecological diversity since the Miocene in New Zealand
A new genus and species of fossil bat is described from New Zealand's only pre-Pleistocene Cenozoic terrestrial fauna, the early Miocene St Bathans Fauna of Central Otago, South Island. Bayesian total evidence phylogenetic analysis places this new Southern Hemisphere taxon among the burrowing bats (mystacinids) of New Zealand and Australia, although its lower dentition also resembles Africa's endemic sucker-footed bats (myzopodids). As the first new bat genus to be added to New Zealand's fauna in more than 150 years, it provides new insight into the original diversity of chiropterans in Australasia. It also underscores the significant decline in morphological diversity that has taken place in the highly distinctive, semi-terrestrial bat family Mystacinidae since the Miocene. This bat was relatively large, with an estimated body mass of ~40âg, and its dentition suggests it had an omnivorous diet. Its striking dental autapomorphies, including development of a large hypocone, signal a shift of diet compared with other mystacinids, and may provide evidence of an adaptive radiation in feeding strategy in this group of noctilionoid bats
Evaluation of in situ measurements of atmospheric carbon monoxide at Mount Waliguan, China
Quasicontinuous measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) recorded over three years at Mount Waliguan (WLG), a global baseline station in remote western China, were examined using back trajectory analysis. The data include a revision to correct the working reference scale to the WMO2000 scale and corrections for drift in the reference gases. Between July 2004 and June 2007, CO exhibited large fluctuations and the 5 %, 50 % and 95 %-percentiles of relevant CO mixing ratios were 102 ppb, 126 ppb and 194 ppb. Approximately 50 % of all observed data were selected as CO background data using a mathematical procedure of robust local regression, with the remainder affected by regional-scale pollution. The monthly mean background CO mixing ratios showed a minimum in summer and a maximum in late winter, although all seasons were affected by short-term enhancements that exceeded background levels. The CO data were compared to values observed at the high alpine research station at Jungfraujoch, Switzerland. Smaller seasonal amplitudes were observed at WLG compared to the Jungfraujoch due to lower winter and spring CO levels, however, episodic enhancements of polluted air were greater at WLG. The air parcels arriving at WLG came predominately from the west, except in summer when advection from the east and southeast prevailed. Transport from the east or southeast typically brought polluted air to the site, having passed over populated urban areas upwind. A large number of elevated CO mixing ratios could also be associated with advection from the northwest of WLG via the central Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) and the Ge'ermu urban area where growing industrial activities as well as crops residue burning provide sources of CO. Air masses passing over northwestern Gansu were associated with relatively high CO values suggesting an anthropogenic influence, which was likely due to anthropogenic emissions from northwestern China (based on back-trajectory and potential source contribution analysis and on the INTEX-B: intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-Phase B). Background conditions were observed most frequently in air parcels from remote Tibet west of WLG. The probability that air parcels pass over regions of clean or polluted regions was further identified using potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis
The Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey: K-band Galaxy Number Counts
We present K-band number counts for the faint galaxies in the Calar Alto Deep
Imaging Survey (CADIS). We covered 4 CADIS fields, a total area of 0.2deg^2, in
the broad band filters B, R and K. We detect about 4000 galaxies in the K-band
images, with a completeness limit of K=19.75mag, and derive the K-band galaxy
number counts in the range of 14.25 < K < 19.75mag. This is the largest medium
deep K-band survey to date in this magnitude range. The B- and R-band number
counts are also derived, down to completeness limits of B=24.75mag and
R=23.25mag. The K-selected galaxies in this magnitude range are of particular
interest, since some medium deep near-infrared surveys have identified breaks
of both the slope of the K-band number counts and the mean B-K color at
K=17\sim18mag. There is, however, a significant disagreement in the K-band
number counts among the existing surveys. Our large near-infrared selected
galaxy sample allows us to establish the presence of a clear break in the slope
at K=17.0mag from dlogN/dm = 0.64 at brighter magnitudes to dlogN/dm = 0.36 at
the fainter end. We construct no-evolution and passive evolution models, and
find that the passive evolution model can simultaneously fit the B-, R- and
K-band number counts well. The B-K colors show a clear trend to bluer colors
for K > 18mag. We also find that most of the K=18-20mag galaxies have a B-K
color bluer than the prediction of a no-evolution model for an L_* Sbc galaxy,
implying either significant evolution, even for massive galaxies, or the
existence of an extra population of small galaxies.Comment: Accepted for A&A, 10 pages, 7 figure

Influences of hydroxyl radicals (OH) on top-down estimates of the global and regional methane budgets
The hydroxyl radical (OH), which is the dominant sink of methane (CH4), plays a key role in closing the global methane budget. Current top-down estimates of the global and regional CH4 budget using 3D models usually apply prescribed OH fields and attribute modelâobservation mismatches almost exclusively to CH4 emissions, leaving the uncertainties due to prescribed OH fields less quantified. Here, using a variational Bayesian inversion framework and the 3D chemical transport model LMDz, combined with 10 different OH fields derived from chemistryâclimate models (ChemistryâClimate Model Initiative, or CCMI, experiment), we evaluate the influence of OH burden, spatial distribution, and temporal variations on the global and regional CH4 budget. The global tropospheric mean CH4-reaction-weighted [OH] ([OH]GMâCH4) ranges 10.3â16.3Ă105âmolecâcmâ3 across 10 OH fields during the early 2000s, resulting in inversion-based global CH4 emissions between 518 and 757ââTgâyrâ1. The uncertainties in CH4 inversions induced by the different OH fields are similar to the CH4 emission range estimated by previous bottom-up syntheses and larger than the range reported by the top-down studies. The uncertainties in emissions induced by OH are largest over South America, corresponding to large inter-model differences of [OH] in this region. From the early to the late 2000s, the optimized CH4 emissions increased by 22±6ââTgâyrâ1 (17â30ââTgâyrâ1), of which âŒ25ââ% (on average) offsets the 0.7ââ% (on average) increase in OH burden. If the CCMI models represent the OH trend properly over the 2000s, our results show that a higher increasing trend of CH4 emissions is needed to match the CH4 observations compared to the CH4 emission trend derived using constant OH. This study strengthens the importance of reaching a better representation of OH burden and of OH spatial and temporal distributions to reduce the uncertainties in the global and regional CH4 budgets
