    The Virtual Solar Observatory: What Are We Up To Now?

    In the nearly ten years of a functional Virtual Solar Observatory (VSO), http://virtualsolar.org/ we have made it possible to query and access sixty-seven distinct solar data products and several event lists from nine spacecraft and fifteen observatories or observing networks. We have used existing VSO technology, and developed new software, for a distributed network of sites caching and serving SDO HMI and/ or AlA data. We have also developed an application programming interface (API) that has enabled VSO search and data access capabilities in IDL, Python, and Java. We also have quite a bit of work yet to do, including completion of the implementation of access to SDO EVE data, and access to some nineteen other data sets from space- and ground-based observatories. In addition, we have been developing a new graphic user interface that will enable the saving of user interface and search preferences.     Formalization of Transform Methods using HOL Light

    Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next, we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges faced during the formalization.     Few smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points

    We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12 lattice points.     Fermi LAT observations of cosmic-ray electrons from 7 GeV to 1 TeV

    We present the results of our analysis of cosmic-ray electrons using about 8 million electron candidates detected in the first 12 months on-orbit by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. This work extends our previously-published cosmic-ray electron spectrum down to 7 GeV, giving a spectral range of approximately 2.5 decades up to 1 TeV. We describe in detail the analysis and its validation using beam-test and on-orbit data. In addition, we describe the spectrum measured via a subset of events selected for the best energy resolution as a cross-check on the measurement using the full event sample. Our electron spectrum can be described with a power law ∝E−3.08±0.05\propto {\rm E}^{-3.08 \pm 0.05} with no prominent spectral features within systematic uncertainties. Within the limits of our uncertainties, we can accommodate a slight spectral hardening at around 100 GeV and a slight softening above 500 GeV.Comment: 20 pages, 23 figures, 2 tables, published in Physical Review D 82, 092004 (2010) - contact authors: C.     Altered plasticity of the parasympathetic innervation in the recovering rat submandibular gland following extensive atrophy

    Adult rat submandibular glands have a rich autonomic innervation, with parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves working in synergy rather than antagonistically. Ligation of the secretory duct rapidly causes atrophy and the loss of most acini, which are the main target cell for parasympathetic nerves. Following deligation, there is a recovery of gland structure and function, as assessed by autonomimetic stimulation. This study examines whether the parasympathetic nerves reattach to new target cells to form functional neuro-effector junctions. Under recovery anaesthesia, the submandibular duct of adult male rats was ligated via an intra-oral approach to avoid damaging the chorda-lingual nerve. Four weeks later, rats were either killed or anaesthetized and the ligation clip removed. Following a further 8 weeks, both submandibular ducts were cannulated under terminal anaesthesia. Salivary flows were then stimulated electrically (chorda-lingual nerve at 2, 5 and 10 Hz) and subsequently by methacholine (whole-body infusion at two doses). Glands were excised, weighed and divided for further in vitro studies or fixed for histological examination. Ligation of ducts caused 75% loss of gland weight, with the loss of most acinar cells. Of the remaining acini, only 50% were innervated despite unchanged choline acetyltransferase activity, suggesting few parasympathetic nerves had died. Following deligation, submandibular glands recovered half their weight and had normal morphology. Salivary flows from both glands (per unit of gland tissue) were similar when evoked by methacholine but greater from the deligated glands when evoked by nerve stimulation. This suggests that parasympathetic nerves had reattached to new target cells in the recovered glands at a greater ratio than normal, confirming reinnervation of the regenerating gland

    A Search for Jet Handedness in Hadronic Z0Z^0 Decays

    We have searched for signatures of polarization in hadronic jets from Z0→qqˉZ^0 \to q \bar{q} decays using the ``jet handedness'' method. The polar angle asymmetry induced by the high SLC electron-beam polarization was used to separate quark jets from antiquark jets, expected to be left- and right-polarized, respectively. We find no evidence for jet handedness in our global sample or in a sample of light quark jets and we set upper limits at the 95% C.L. of 0.063 and 0.099 respectively on the magnitude of the analyzing power of the method proposed by Efremov {\it et al.}Comment: Revtex, 8 pages, 2 figure

    Measurement of the branching ratios of the Z0 into heavy quarks

    We measure the hadronic branching ratios of the Z0 boson into heavy quarks: Rb=Gamma(Z0->bb)/Gamma(Z0->hadrons) and Rc=Gamma(Z0->cc/Gamma(Z0->hadrons) using a multi-tag technique. The measurement was performed using about 400,000 hadronic Z0 events recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC between 1996 and 1998. The small and stable SLC beam spot and the CCD-based vertex detector were used to reconstruct bottom and charm hadron decay vertices with high efficiency and purity, which enables us to measure most efficiencies from data. We obtain, Rb=0.21604 +- 0.00098(stat.) +- 0.00073(syst.) -+ 0.00012(Rc) and, Rc= 0.1744 +- 0.0031(stat.) +- 0.0020(syst.) -+ 0.0006(Rb)Comment: 37 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev.
