    On the Feasibility of Maintenance Algorithms in Dynamic Graphs

    Near ubiquitous mobile computing has led to intense interest in dynamic graph theory. This provides a new and challenging setting for algorithmics and complexity theory. For any graph-based problem, the rapid evolution of a (possibly disconnected) graph over time naturally leads to the important complexity question: is it better to calculate a new solution from scratch or to adapt the known solution on the prior graph to quickly provide a solution of guaranteed quality for the changed graph? In this paper, we demonstrate that the former is the best approach in some cases, but that there are cases where the latter is feasible. We prove that, under certain conditions, hard problems cannot even be approximated in any reasonable complexity bound --- i.e., even with a large amount of time, having a solution to a very similar graph does not help in computing a solution to the current graph. To achieve this, we formalize the idea as a maintenance algorithm. Using r-Regular Subgraph as the primary example we show that W[1]-hardness for the parameterized approximation problem implies the non-existence of a maintenance algorithm for the given approximation ratio. Conversely we show that Vertex Cover, which is fixed-parameter tractable, has a 2-approximate maintenance algorithm. The implications of NP-hardness and NPO-hardness are also explored

    A review of important electroencephalogram features for the assessment of brain maturation in premature infants

    This review describes the maturational features of the baseline electroencephalogram (EEG) in the neurologically healthy preterm infant. Features such as continuity, sleep state, synchrony and transient waveforms are described, even from extremely preterm infants and includes abundant illustrated examples. The physiological significance of these EEG features and their relationship to neurodevelopment are highlighted where known. This review also demonstrates the importance of multichannel conventional EEG monitoring for preterm infants as many of the features described are not apparent if limited channel EEG monitors are used. Conclusion: This review aims to provide healthcare professionals in the neonatal intensive care unit with guidance on the more common normal maturational features seen in the EEG of preterm infants

    Development of a Novel Pinned Connection for Cold-Formed Steel Trusses

    Cold-formed steel trusses are a popular form of construction for light-weight buildings, particularly portal frame structures, for which spans up to 25m are increasingly common. In these long span trusses, providing high strength connections with sufficient elastic stiffness is a current limitation to developing cost-effective solutions. A novel pin-jointed truss connection named the Howick Rivet Connector (HRC) has been tested, firstly in a T-joint arrangement, then in a truss assemblage to determine its reliable strength and stiffness. Results showed that the HRC performs similarly to a bolted connection in terms of failure modes observed and loads reached. Additionally, the process of installing the HRC creates a bearing fit, eliminating slip due to tolerances. The elastic stiffness and proportionality limit of trusses with HRCs installed was shown to be appreciably greater than similarly dimensioned conventional screwed systems. Finite element (FE) models of both T-joints and trusses tested showed good agreement with experimental results, particularly in the transition from elastic to inelastic behaviour. The peak loads predicted from the FE models were however not accurately determined. To better predict this, it is recommended that the HRC forming and installation process be modelled to capture geometric irregularities and inelastic distributions which were idealised

    The Fear Reduction Exercised Early (FREE) approach to low back pain: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Available from BioMed Central via the DOI in this record.BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a major health issue associated with considerable health loss and societal costs. General practitioners (GPs) play an important role in the management of LBP; however, GP care has not been shown to be the most cost-effective approach unless exercise and behavioural counselling are added to usual care. The Fear Reduction Exercised Early (FREE) approach to LBP has been developed to assist GPs to manage LBP by empowering exploration and management of psychosocial barriers to recovery and provision of evidence-based care and information. The aim of the Low Back Pain in General Practice (LBPinGP) trial is to explore whether patients with LBP who receive care from GPs trained in the FREE approach have better outcomes than those who receive usual care. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a cluster randomised controlled superiority trial comparing the FREE approach with usual care for LBP management with investigator-blinded assessment of outcomes. GPs will be recruited and then cluster randomised (in practice groups) to the intervention or control arm. Intervention arm GPs will receive training in the FREE approach, and control arm GPs will continue to practice as usual. Patients presenting to their GP with a primary complaint of LBP will be allocated on the basis of allocation of the GP they consult. We aim to recruit 60 GPs and 275 patients (assuming patients are recruited from 75% of GPs and an average of 5 patients per GP complete the study, accounting for 20% patient participant dropout). Patient participants and the trial statistician will be blind to group allocation throughout the study. Analyses will be undertaken on an intention-to-treat basis. The primary outcome will be back-related functional impairment 6 months post-initial LBP consultation (interim data at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months), measured with the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire. Secondary patient outcomes include pain, satisfaction, quality of life, days off from work and costs of care. Secondary GP outcomes include beliefs about pain and impairment, GP confidence, and actual and reported clinical behaviour. Health economic and process evaluations will be conducted. DISCUSSION: In the LBPinGP trial, we will investigate providing an intervention during the first interaction a person with back pain has with their GP. Because the FREE approach is used within a normal GP consultation, if effective, it may be a cost-effective means of improving LBP care.     Interrogating the Light-Induced Charging Mechanism in Li-Ion Batteries Using Operando Optical Microscopy

    Photobatteries, batteries with a light-sensitive electrode, have recently been proposed as a way of simultaneously capturing and storing solar energy in a single device. Despite reports of photocharging with multiple different electrode materials, the overall mechanism of operation remains poorly understood. Here, we use operando optical reflection microscopy to investigate light-induced charging in LixV2O5 electrodes. We image the electrode, at the single-particle level, under three conditions: (a) with a closed circuit and light but no electronic power source (photocharging), (b) during galvanostatic cycling with light (photoenhanced), and (c) with heat but no light (thermal). We demonstrate that light can indeed drive lithiation changes in LixV2O5 while maintaining charge neutrality, possibly via a combination of faradaic and nonfaradaic effects taking place in individual particles. Our results provide an addition to the photobattery mechanistic model highlighting that both intercalation-based charging and lithium concentration polarization effects contribute to the increased photocharging capacity
