In the Ancient history the mystery of the Creation of the world was revealed to the Prophet Moses. NGC 4395 is a bulgeless spiral galaxy, harboring one of the nearest known type 1 Seyfert nuclei. Although there is no consensus on the mass of its central engine, several estimates suggest it is one of the lightest massive black holes (MBHs) known. We present the first direct dynamical measurement of the mass of this MBH from a combination of two-dimensional gas kinematic data, obtained with the adaptive optics assisted near-infrared integral field spectrograph Gemini/NIFS and high-resolution multiband photometric data from Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3. We use the photometric data to model the shape and stellar mass-to-light ratio of the nuclear star cluster (NSC). From the Gemini/NIFS observations, we derive the kinematics of warm molecular hydrogen gas as traced by emission through the H2 1–0 S(1) transition. These kinematics show a clear rotational signal, with a position angle orthogonal to NGC 4395's radio jet. Our best-fitting tilted ring models of the kinematics of the molecular hydrogen gas contain a black hole with mass M={4}-3+8× {10}5 M⊙ (3σ uncertainties) embedded in an NSC of mass M=2× {10}6 M⊙. Our black hole mass measurement is in excellent agreement with the reverberation mapping mass estimate of Peterson et al. but shows some tension with other mass measurement methods based on accretion signals

Spitzer-IRS Study of the Antennae Galaxies NGC 4038/39

Using the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope, we observed the Antennae galaxies obtaining spectral maps of the entire central region and high signal-to-noise 5-38 um spectra of the two galactic nuclei and six infrared-luminous regions. The total infrared luminosity of our six IR peaks plus the two nuclei is L_IR = 3.8x10^10 L_o, with their derived star formation rates ranging between 0.2 and 2 M_o/yr, with a total of 6.6 M_o/yr. The hardest and most luminous radiation originates from two compact clusters in the southern part of the overlap region, which also have the highest dust temperatures. PAH emission and other tracers of softer radiation are spatially extended throughout and beyond the overlap region, but regions with harder and intenser radiation field show a reduced PAH strength. The strong H_2 emission is rather confined around the nucleus of NGC 4039, where shocks appear to be the dominant excitation mechanism, and the southern part of the overlap region, where it traces the most recent starburst activity. The luminosity ratio between the warm molecular gas (traced by the H_2 lines) and the total far-IR emission is ~1.6x10^-4, similar to that found in many starburst and ULIRGs. The total mass of warm H_2 in the Antennae is 2.5x10^7 M_o, with a fraction of warm to total H_2 gas mass of about 0.35%. The average warm H_2 temperature is 302+/-26 K and appears anti-correlated with the radiation field hardness, possibly due to an evolution of the PDR morphology. The previously reported tight correlation between the H_2 and PAH emission was not found but higher total PAH emission to continuum ratios were found in PDRs with warmer gas.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, accepted by ApJ, full resolution version at http://www.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~brandl/ngc4038_brandl.pd

Super-resolution time-resolved imaging using computational sensor fusion

Imaging across both the full transverse spatial and temporal dimensions of a scene with high precision in all three coordinates is key to applications ranging from LIDAR to fluorescence lifetime imaging. However, compromises that sacrifice, for example, spatial resolution at the expense of temporal resolution are often required, in particular when the full 3-dimensional data cube is required in short acquisition times. We introduce a sensor fusion approach that combines data having low-spatial resolution but high temporal precision gathered with a single-photon-avalanche-diode (SPAD) array with data that has high spatial but no temporal resolution, such as that acquired with a standard CMOS camera. Our method, based on blurring the image on the SPAD array and computational sensor fusion, reconstructs time-resolved images at significantly higher spatial resolution than the SPAD input, upsampling numerical data by a factor 12 × 12 , and demonstrating up to 4 × 4 upsampling of experimental data. We demonstrate the technique for both LIDAR applications and FLIM of fluorescent cancer cells. This technique paves the way to high spatial resolution SPAD imaging or, equivalently, FLIM imaging with conventional microscopes at frame rates accelerated by more than an order of magnitude

Prevalence and risk factors of symptomatic carotid stenosis in patients with recent transient ischaemic attack or ischaemic stroke in the Netherlands

Introduction: Literature on prevalence of symptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis is scarce and heterogeneous. Prevalence may have decreased in recent years due to improved management of cardiovascular risk factors. We aim to estimate current prevalence and identify risk factors of ipsilateral internal carotid artery stenosis in patients with recent hemispheric transient ischaemic attack or isch

Contribution of Energetically Reactive Surface Features to the Dissolution of CeO2 and ThO2 Analogues for Spent Nuclear Fuel Microstructures

In the safety case for the geological disposal of nuclear waste, the release of radioactivity from the repository is controlled by the dissolution of the spent fuel in groundwater. There remain several uncertainties associated with understanding spent fuel dissolution, including the contribution of energetically reactive surface sites to the dissolution rate. In this study, we investigate how surface features influence the dissolution rate of synthetic CeO2 and ThO2, spent nuclear fuel analogues that approximate as closely as possible the microstructure characteristics of fuel-grade UO2 but are not sensitive to changes in oxidation state of the cation. The morphology of grain boundaries (natural features) and surface facets (specimen preparation-induced features) was investigated during dissolution. The effects of surface polishing on dissolution rate were also investigated. We show that preferential dissolution occurs at grain boundaries, resulting in grain boundary decohesion and enhanced dissolution rates. A strong crystallographic control was exerted, with high misorientation angle grain boundaries retreating more rapidly than those with low misorientation angles, which may be due to the accommodation of defects in the grain boundary structure. The data from these simplified analogue systems support the hypothesis that grain boundaries play a role in the so-called “instant release fraction” of spent fuel, and should be carefully considered, in conjunction with other chemical effects, in safety performance assessements for the geological disposal of spent fuel. Surface facets formed during the sample annealing process also exhibited a strong crystallographic control and were found to dissolve rapidly on initial contact with dissolution medium. Defects and strain induced during sample polishing caused an overestimation of the dissolution rate, by up to 3 orders of magnitude

Spisulosine (ES-285) given as a weekly three-hour intravenous infusion: results of a phase I dose-escalating study in patients with advanced solid malignancies

Spisulosine is a marine compound that showed antitumor activity in preclinical studies. We report results of a phase I trial performed in patients with advanced solid tumors with the marine compound, with the aim to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of a weekly 3-h intravenous (iv.) infusion, and to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of the compound. Two centers contributed 25 patients to the trial, and 7 dose levels were explored. In dose levels ranging from 4 to 128 mg/mA(2)/day, no dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) were observed. One patient had DLT at 200 mg/mA(2), a reversible grade 3 ALT increase. The MTD was not reached due to early termination of the Spisulosine trial program but is considered to be likely in the range of 200 mg/mA(2) for this schedule. Drug-related adverse reactions included mild to moderate nausea, pyrexia, injection site reactions, and vomiting. One case of grade 4 peripheral motor and sensory neuropathy associated with general weakness and pain was observed during treatment cycle 4 and possibly contributed to the death of the patient. Grade 3 laboratory abnormalities included anemia and lymphopenia and increases in liver enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, transaminases, and bilirubin). Objective responses were not observed, and only four patients had short-lasting stable disease (< 3 months). The PK data indicated a wide distribution, a long residence time, and dose proportionality of the agent. Hepato- and neuro-toxicity are schedule independent dose-limiting adverse events for this marine compound, as illustrated by this and other early clinical trials
