    Im Zuge einiger Neu- und Umbauprojekte kam es in Wien in den letzten Jahren immer wieder zu heftigen Debatten um die Bewahrung alter Bausubstanz. Nicht selten lässt sich beobachten, dass die Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ) versucht, sich aktiv in den Diskurs einzubringen und sich für den Erhalt bestimmter Gebäude einsetzt. Die FPÖ gibt sich volksnah und denkmalschützerisch. Der folgende Text untersucht Online-Auftritte der FPÖ und analysiert die verschiedenen Verschränkungen von rechten Deutungsmustern im Denkmalschutzdiskurs. Anhand der Beispiele des Café und Schloss Cobenzl und der Steinhofgründe am Rande Wiens wird gezeigt, welche Strategien die FPÖ verfolgt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Rechte jene Kontroversen besonders stark nutzt, die zugleich politisch und emotional sind. Vor allem in der Deutungshoheit von Geschichte in ihrer baulichen Manifestation wittern die Rechten Chancen

    The aim of the paper is to present a model of entrepreneurial management for aquaponics activities, to provide a financial planning and analysis tool. This model can also be of assistance to land-based farmers who want to more thoroughly utilize their water resources by developing small-scale aquaponics systems to provide supplementary income. Aquaponics is an innovative approach located within two concepts based on multifunctional agriculture and aquaculture. This integrated management of the production system can satisfy human food needs and enhance environmental quality by producing crops using environmentally friendly practices that minimize water and nutrient waste discharges to the environment.   El objetivo del documento es presentar un modelo de gestión empresarial para actividades acuapónicas, para proporcionar una herramienta de análisis y planificación financiera. Este modelo también puede ser útil para los agricultores terrestres que desean utilizar sus recursos hídricos más a fondo mediante el desarrollo de sistemas acuapónicos a pequeña escala para proporcionar ingresos suplementarios. Aquaponica es un enfoque innovador ubicado en dos conceptos basados ​​en la agricultura multifuncional y la acuicultura.     Management of biliary lithiasis in pregnancy – an updated overview

    It is estimated that 2% of pregnant women develop gallstones during pregnancy. Symptoms of biliary lithiasis may vary during pregnancy, from a slight added digestive discomfort to biliary colic of varying intensity, acute cholecystitis, or acute pancreatitis. Ultrasonography is the gold standard for diagnosis of sludge and gallstones, being both highly sensitive and specific. Initial management overlaps with the out-of-pregnancy management, initiating conservative, supportive care, as well as an adequate diet. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered a safe intervention in pregnancy, being the second most common surgery after appendicectomy. If open laparoscopy is preferred, the major risk - perforation of the uterus - is avoided. Important complications of gallstones in pregnancy, jaundice and acute pancreatitis can be resolved safely and quickly by cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) techniques, with stone removal, sphincterotomy or stent mounting. After remission of pancreatic symptoms, laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed. Recent scientific data and current practice suggest an increase of biliopancreatic emergencies during pregnancy (probably due to rising incidence of obesity, age of gravida, prolonged use of oral combined contraceptives, dyslipidemia, etc.). Surgeons, as well as obstetricians, should be aware of the prompt modern management of these cases

    Circulating Metabolites Associated with Alcohol Intake in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Cohort.

    Identifying the metabolites associated with alcohol consumption may provide insights into the metabolic pathways through which alcohol may affect human health. We studied associations of alcohol consumption with circulating concentrations of 123 metabolites among 2974 healthy participants from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Alcohol consumption at recruitment was self-reported through dietary questionnaires. Metabolite concentrations were measured by tandem mass spectrometry (BIOCRATES AbsoluteIDQTM p180 kit). Data were randomly divided into discovery (2/3) and replication (1/3) sets. Multivariable linear regression models were used to evaluate confounder-adjusted associations of alcohol consumption with metabolite concentrations. Metabolites significantly related to alcohol intake in the discovery set (FDR q-value < 0.05) were further tested in the replication set (Bonferroni-corrected p-value < 0.05). Of the 72 metabolites significantly related to alcohol intake in the discovery set, 34 were also significant in the replication analysis, including three acylcarnitines, the amino acid citrulline, four lysophosphatidylcholines, 13 diacylphosphatidylcholines, seven acyl-alkylphosphatidylcholines, and six sphingomyelins. Our results confirmed earlier findings that alcohol consumption was associated with several lipid metabolites, and possibly also with specific acylcarnitines and amino acids. This provides further leads for future research studies aiming at elucidating the mechanisms underlying the effects of alcohol in relation to morbid conditions

    Climate, host and geography shape insect and fungal communities of trees.

    Non-native pests, climate change, and their interactions are likely to alter relationships between trees and tree-associated organisms with consequences for forest health. To understand and predict such changes, factors structuring tree-associated communities need to be determined. Here, we analysed the data consisting of records of insects and fungi collected from dormant twigs from 155 tree species at 51 botanical gardens or arboreta in 32 countries. Generalized dissimilarity models revealed similar relative importance of studied climatic, host-related and geographic factors on differences in tree-associated communities. Mean annual temperature, phylogenetic distance between hosts and geographic distance between locations were the major drivers of dissimilarities. The increasing importance of high temperatures on differences in studied communities indicate that climate change could affect tree-associated organisms directly and indirectly through host range shifts. Insect and fungal communities were more similar between closely related vs. distant hosts suggesting that host range shifts may facilitate the emergence of new pests. Moreover, dissimilarities among tree-associated communities increased with geographic distance indicating that human-mediated transport may serve as a pathway of the introductions of new pests. The results of this study highlight the need to limit the establishment of tree pests and increase the resilience of forest ecosystems to changes in climate

    Metabolomic profiles of hepatocellular carcinoma in a European prospective cohort

    Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most prevalent form of liver cancer, is difficult to diagnose and has limited treatment options with a low survival rate. Aside from a few key risk factors, such as hepatitis, high alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, and diabetes, there is incomplete etiologic understanding of the disease and little progress in identification of early risk biomarkers. Methods: To address these aspects, an untargeted nuclear magnetic resonance metabolomic approach was applied to pre-diagnostic serum samples obtained from first incident, primary HCC cases (n = 114) and matched controls (n = 222) identified from amongst the participants of a large European prospective cohort. Results: A metabolic pattern associated with HCC risk comprised of perturbations in fatty acid oxidation and amino acid, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism was observed. Sixteen metabolites of either endogenous or exogenous origin were found to be significantly associated with HCC risk. The influence of hepatitis infection and potential liver damage was assessed, and further analyses were made to distinguish patterns of early or later diagnosis. Conclusion: Our results show clear metabolic alterations from early stages of HCC development with application for better etiologic understanding, prevention, and early detection of this increasingly common cancer.This work was supported by the French National Cancer Institute (L’Institut National du Cancer; INCA; grant number 2009-139; PI: M.
