Sex-specific selection for MHC variability in Alpine chamois
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In mammals, males typically have shorter lives than females. This difference is thought to be due to behavioural traits which enhance competitive abilities, and hence male reproductive success, but impair survival. Furthermore, in many species males usually show higher parasite burden than females. Consequently, the intensity of selection for genetic factors which reduce susceptibility to pathogens may differ between sexes. High variability at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes is believed to be advantageous for detecting and combating the range of infectious agents present in the environment. Increased heterozygosity at these immune genes is expected to be important for individual longevity. However, whether males in natural populations benefit more from MHC heterozygosity than females has rarely been investigated. We investigated this question in a long-term study of free-living Alpine chamois (<it>Rupicapra rupicapra</it>), a polygynous mountain ungulate.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we show that male chamois survive significantly (<it>P </it>= 0.022) longer if heterozygous at the MHC class II <it>DRB </it>locus, whereas females do not. Improved survival of males was not a result of heterozygote advantage <it>per se</it>, as background heterozygosity (estimated across twelve microsatellite loci) did not change significantly with age. Furthermore, reproductively active males depleted their body fat reserves earlier than females leading to significantly impaired survival rates in this sex (<it>P </it>< 0.008). This sex-difference was even more pronounced in areas affected by scabies, a severe parasitosis, as reproductively active males were less likely to survive than females. However, we did not find evidence for a survival advantage associated with specific MHC alleles in areas affected by scabies.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Increased MHC class II <it>DRB </it>heterozygosity with age in males, suggests that MHC heterozygous males survive longer than homozygotes. Reproductively active males appear to be less likely to survive than females most likely because of the energetic challenge of the winter rut, accompanied by earlier depletion of their body fat stores, and a generally higher parasite burden. This scenario renders the MHC-mediated immune response more important for males than for females, which implies a relatively stronger selection pressure on MHC genes in males than in females.</p
Genetic characterization of a Sinorhizobium meliloti chromosomal region involved in lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis
The genetic characterization of a 5.5-kb chromosomal region of Sinorhizobium meliloti 2011 that contains lpsB, a gene required for the normal development of symbiosis with Medicago spp., is presented. The nucleotide sequence of this DNA fragment revealed the presence of six genes: greA and lpsB, transcribed in the forward direction; and lpsE, lpsD, lpsC, and lrp, transcribed in the reverse direction. Except for lpsB, none of the lps genes were relevant for nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Analysis of the transcriptional organization of lpsB showed that greA and lpsB are part of separate transcriptional units, which is in agreement with the finding of a DNA stretch homologous to a "nonnitrogen" promoter consensus sequence between greA and lpsB. The opposite orientation of lpsB with respect to its first downstream coding sequence, lpsE, indicated that the altered LPS and the defective symbiosis of lpsB mutants are both consequences of a primary nonpolar defect in a single gene. Global sequence comparisons revealed that the greA-lpsB and lrp genes of S. meliloti have a genetic organization similar to that of their homologous loci in R. leguminosarum bv. viciae. In particular, high sequence similarity was found between the translation product of lpsB and a core-related biosynthetic mannosyltransferase of R. leguminosarum bv. viciae encoded by the lpcC gene. The functional relationship between these two genes was demonstrated in genetic complementation experiments in which the S. meliloti lpsB gene restored the wild-type LPS phenotype when introduced into lpcC mutants of R. leguminosarum. These results support the view that S. meliloti lpsB also encodes a mannosyltransferase that participates in the biosynthesis of the LPS core. (In)finite extent of stationary perfect fluids in Newtonian theory
For stationary, barotropic fluids in Newtonian gravity we give simple
criteria on the equation of state and the "law of motion" which guarantee
finite or infinite extent of the fluid region (providing a priori estimates for
the corresponding stationary Newton-Euler system). Under more restrictive
conditions, we can also exclude the presence of "hollow" configurations. Our
main result, which does not assume axial symmetry, uses the virial theorem as
the key ingredient and generalises a known result in the static case. In the
axially symmetric case stronger results are obtained and examples are

Covalent bond shortening and distortion induced by pressurization of thorium, uranium, and neptunium tetrakis aryloxides
Covalency involving the 5f orbitals is regularly invoked to explain the reactivity, structure and spectroscopic properties of the actinides, but the ionic versus covalent nature of metal-ligand bonding in actinide complexes remains controversial. The tetrakis 2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxide complexes of Th, U and Np form an isostructural series of crystal structures containing approximately tetrahedral MO(4) cores. We show that up to 3 GPa the Th and U crystal structures show negative linear compressibility as the OMO angles distort. At 3 GPa the angles snap back to their original values, reverting to a tetrahedral geometry with an abrupt shortening of the M-O distances by up to 0.1 Å. The Np complex shows similar but smaller effects, transforming above 2.4 GPa. Electronic structure calculations associate the M-O bond shortening with a change in covalency resulting from increased contributions to the M-O bonding by the metal 6d and 5f orbitals, the combination promoting MO(4) flexibility at little cost in energy

Manacled to Identity: Cosmopolitanism, Class, and ‘The Culture Concept’ in Stephen Crane
This article begins with a close reading of Stephen Crane’s short story ‘Manacled’ from 1900, which situates this rarely considered short work within the context of contemporary debates about realism. I then proceed to argue that many of the debates raised by the tale have an afterlife in our own era of American literary studies, which has frequently focused on questions of ‘identity’ and ‘culture’ in its reading of realism and naturalism to the exclusion of the importance of cosmopolitan discourses of diffusion and exchange across national borders. I then offer a brief reading of Crane’s novel George’s Mother, which follows Walter Benn Michaels in suggesting that the recent critical attention paid to particularities of cultural difference in American studies have come to conflate ideas of class and social position with ideas of culture in ways that have ultimately obscured the presence of genuine historical inequalities in US society. In order to challenge this critical commonplace, I situate Crane’s work within a history of transatlantic cosmopolitanism associated with the ideas of Franz Boas and Matthew Arnold to demonstrate the ways in which Crane’s narratives sought out an experience of the universal within their treatments of the particular
What Makes an Ex-Combatant Happy? A Micro-Analysis of Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration in South Sudan
Successful management of combatants through disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) remains one of the main challenges of post-conflict peacebuilding. While DDR is meant to contribute to a secure post-conflict environment conducive to economic and political development, the success of DDR efforts remains mixed. Unlike previous work focusing on procedural aspects or post-conflict reconstruction and development, we shift the focus to understand microlevel conditions—economic, security, and ethnic concerns—that influence ex-combatants' satisfaction with DDR. We argue that ex-combatant satisfaction with DDR should increase as individual-level economic conditions increase, as security situations improve, and as ethnic tensions decrease. We test our expectations using an original data set collected with field interviews and surveys from 122 ex-combatants in South Sudan in 2011–2012. We find that participants are more satisfied when their income-generating activity is based on DDR job training and when the UN has a large presence in their area. Concerns about political instability and an abundance of firearms make ex-combatants less satisfied with DDR
A New Nonlinear Liquid Drop Model. Clusters as Solitons on The Nuclear Surface
By introducing in the hydrodynamic model, i.e. in the hydrodynamic equations
and the corresponding boundary conditions, the higher order terms in the
deviation of the shape, we obtain in the second order the Korteweg de Vries
equation (KdV). The same equation is obtained by introducing in the liquid drop
model (LDM), i.e. in the kinetic, surface and Coulomb terms, the higher terms
in the second order. The KdV equation has the cnoidal waves as steady-state
solutions. These waves could describe the small anharmonic vibrations of
spherical nuclei up to the solitary waves. The solitons could describe the
preformation of clusters on the nuclear surface. We apply this nonlinear liquid
drop model to the alpha formation in heavy nuclei. We find an additional
minimum in the total energy of such systems, corresponding to the solitons as
clusters on the nuclear surface. By introducing the shell effects we choose
this minimum to be degenerated with the ground state. The spectroscopic factor

Organometallic neptunium(III) complexes
Studies of transuranic organometallic complexes provide a particularly valuable insight into covalent contributions to the metal–ligand bonding, in which the subtle differences between the transuranium actinide ions and their lighter lanthanide counterparts are of fundamental importance for the effective remediation of nuclear waste. Unlike the organometallic chemistry of uranium, which has focused strongly on UIII and has seen some spectacular advances, that of the transuranics is significantly technically more challenging and has remained dormant. In the case of neptunium, it is limited mainly to NpIV. Here we report the synthesis of three new NpIII organometallic compounds and the characterization of their molecular and electronic structures. These studies suggest that NpIII complexes could act as single-molecule magnets, and that the lower oxidation state of NpII is chemically accessible. In comparison with lanthanide analogues, significant d- and f-electron contributions to key NpIII orbitals are observed, which shows that fundamental neptunium organometallic chemistry can provide new insights into the behaviour of f-elements
