Deposition of ammonium and nitrate in the roots of maize seedlings supplied with different nitrogen salts

This study measured total osmolarity and concentrations of NH4+, NO3–, K+, soluble carbohydrates, and organic acids in maize seminal roots as a function of distance from the apex, and NH4+ and NO3– in xylem sap for plants receiving NH4+ or NO3– as a sole N-source, NH4+ plus NO3–, or no nitrogen at all. The disparity between net deposition rates and net exogenous influx of NH4+ indicated that growing cells imported NH4+ from more mature tissue, whereas more mature root tissues assimilated or translocated a portion of the NH4+ absorbed. Net root NO3– influx under Ca(NO3)2 nutrition was adequate to account for pools found in the growth zone and provided twice as much as was deposited locally throughout the non-growing tissue. In contrast, net root NO3– influx under NH4NO3 was less than the local deposition rate in the growth zone, indicating that additional NO3– was imported or metabolically produced. The profile of NO3– deposition rate in the growth zone, however, was similar for the plants receiving Ca(NO3)2 or NH4NO3. These results suggest that NO3– may serve a major role as an osmoticant for supporting root elongation in the basal part of the growth zone and maintaining root function in the young mature tissues

Candidate Success and edTPA: Looking at the Data

    Get PDF
This descriptive study looks at the correlations between Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) data and numerous program data points, including GPA, major GPA, and benchmark assignment scores, gathered in an Early Childhood Education (ECE) program. Previous studies have looked to correlate grade point average (GPA) with pre-service teacher performance; however, correlating students’ benchmark assessment scores and student performance on edTPA has not been attempted. This study looks to determine the relationships between overall GPA, major GPA (Early Childhood Education), and edTPA performance (overall score and task scores). Relationships were also investigated between program benchmark assessments (case study, family culture project, integrated investigation unit, student teaching evaluation) and edTPA performance (overall score and task scores). Findings suggest a relationship between overall GPA and edTPA overall score as well as GPA and individual edTPA task scores. In exploring benchmark assignments, correlations were found between the Integrated Investigation Unit and overall edTPA score and edTPA Task 1 and 3 scores

    Spatial Data Supply Chains

This paper describes current research into the supply of spatial data to the end user in as close to real time as possible via the World Wide Web. The Spatial Data Infrastructure paradigm has been discussed since the early 1990s. The concept has evolved significantly since then but has almost always examined data from the perspective of the supplier. It has been a supplier driven focus rather than a user driven focus. The current research being conducted is making a paradigm shift and looking at the supply of spatial data as a supply chain, similar to a manufacturing supply chain in which users play a significant part. A comprehensive consultation process took place within Australia and New Zealand incorporating a large number of stakeholders. Three research projects that have arisen from this consultation process are examining Spatial Data Supply Chains within Australia and New Zealand and are discussed within this paper

Exploring masculinities, sexual health and wellbeing across areas of high deprivation in Scotland: the depth of the challenge to improve understandings and practices

    Get PDF
Within and across areas of high deprivation, we explored constructions of masculinity in relation to sexual health and wellbeing, in what we believe to be the first UK study to take this approach. Our sample of 116 heterosexual men and women age 18–40 years took part in individual semi-structured interviews (n = 35) and focus group discussions (n = 18), across areas in Scotland. Drawing on a socio-ecological framework, findings revealed experience in places matter, with gender practices rooted in a domestically violent milieu, where localised, socio-cultural influences offered limited opportunities for more egalitarian performances of masculinity. We discuss the depths of the challenge in transforming masculinities in relation to sexual health and wellbeing in such communities

Unprecedented use of silver(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes for the catalytic preparation of 1,2-bis(boronate) esters

Catalytic diboration of internal and terminal alkenes with Ag(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes leads to 1,2-bis(boronate) esters as single intermediates, that can be oxidised towards the corresponding diols.Sanau Torrecilla, Mercedes, [email protected]
