Effect of weed management strategies on the risk of enteric pathogen transfer into the food chain and lettuce quality
The hygienic quality of raw edible vegetables such as lettuce may be influenced by pathogen transfer from soil to plant, which might occur during weed control by hoeing or as splash-effects during rainfall. The hygienic quality is often discussed when farmyard manures are applied during production, as e.g. in organic farming systems. In a field experiment, the effects of weed control on pathogen transfer from soil fertilised with farmyard manure to lettuce (Lactuca sativa, var. capitata) were evaluated. First results do not confirm pathogen transfer by mechanical weeding or splash effects during rainfall
Electromagnetic Couplings of Nucleon Resonances
An effective Lagrangian calculation of pion photoproduction including all
nucleon resonances up to GeV is presented. We compare our
results to recent calculations and show the influence of different width
parametrizations and offshell cutoffs on the photoproduction multipoles. We
determine the electromagnetic couplings of the resonances from a new fit to the

Long-pulse laser launch and ionization of tailored large neutral silver nanoparticles with atomic mass assignment
We explore the synthesis, characterization, neutral launch and vacuum ultraviolet ionization of massive perfluorinated-alkyl-capped nanoparticles. The presence of the ligand coating in solution is corroborated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and the particle size distribution is analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry identifies perfluoralkyl coated silver nanoparticles as the most stable species among the materials studied here. They can be launched in high vacuum using long-pulse low-power laser heating-orders of magnitude below typical thresholds for laser desorption. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) of the recaptured silver clusters confirms the expected elemental distribution. Volatilization with subsequent ionization of the neutral nanoparticle beam in high vacuum by 157 nm light allows analyzing their mass with atomic resolution

In the title compound, [Zr(C10H15)2(C14H12NO)(CN)], the ZrIV atom is coordinated by two pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligands, the amidate ligand via the N and O atoms, and an additional C N ligand. The four-membered metallacycle is nearly planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.008Ã…). In the crystal, the molecules are connected into centrosymmetric dimers via pairs of N - HN hydrogen bonds
Photoabsorption on nuclei
We calculate the total photoabsorption cross section on nuclei in the energy
range from 300 MeV to 1 GeV within the framework of a semi-classical phase
space model. Besides medium modifications like Fermi motion and Pauli blocking
we focus on the collision broadening of the involved resonances. The resonance
contributions to the elementary cross section are fixed by fits to partial wave
amplitudes of pion photoproduction. The cross sections for ,
needed for the calculation of collision broadening, are obtained by detailed
balance from a fit to cross sections. We show that a
reasonable collision broadening is not able to explain the experimentally
observed disappearance of the -resonance in the photoabsorption

Narrow Resonances in Effective Field Theory
We discuss the power counting for effective field theories with narrow
resonances near a two-body threshold. Close to threshold, the effective field
theory is perturbative and only one combination of coupling constants is
fine-tuned. In the vicinity of the resonance, a second, ``kinematic''
fine-tuning requires a nonperturbative resummation. We illustrate our results

Di-μ-sulfido-bis{[rac-1,2-bis(η5-4,5,6, 7-tetrahydroinden-1-yl)ethane]zirconium(IV)} toluene monosolvate
The title dimeric zirconium complex, [Zr3(C20H 24)2S2]·C7H8, was obtained from the reaction of (ebthi)Zr(η2-Me3Si-C2-SiMe3) [ebthi is rac-1,2-bis(η5-4,5,6,7-tetrahydroinden-1-yl)ethane] and S=C=N-ada (ada = adamantan-1-yl) along with the formation of the isonitrile C N-ada. Each ZrIV atom is coordinated by the sterically hindered ebthi ligand and two μ-sulfide ligands in a strongly distorted tetrahedral geometry. The [ZrS]2 unit is almost planar (mean deviation from the best plane of the four atoms = 0.025Å). A -CH2-CH2- group in one ebthi ligand was disordered over two sites, with refined occupancy factors of 0.551(6) and 0.449(6). The asymmetric unit also contains a toluene solvent molecule
New attempts to understand nanodiamond stardust
We report on a concerted effort aimed at understanding the origin and history
of the pre-solar nanodiamonds in meteorites including the astrophysical sources
of the observed isotopic abundance signatures. This includes measurement of
light elements by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), analysis of
additional heavy trace elements by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and
dynamic calculations of r-process nucleosynthesis with updated nuclear
properties. Results obtained indicate: a) there is no evidence for the former
presence of now extinct 26Al and 44Ti in our diamond samples other than what
can be attributed to silicon carbide and other "impurities"; this does not
offer support for a supernova (SN) origin but neither does it negate it; b)
analysis by AMS of platinum in "bulk diamond" yields an overabundance of r-only
198Pt that at face value seems more consistent with the neutron burst than with
the separation model for the origin of heavy trace elements in the diamonds,
although this conclusion is not firm given analytical uncertainties; c) if the
Xe-H pattern was established by an unadulterated r-process, it must have been a
strong variant of the main r-process, which possibly could also account for the
