Lack of Association Between Dietary Inflammatory Index and Low Impact Fractures in the Brazilian Population: the Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS)
Introduction: Adequate nutrition, including intake of dietary calcium and vitamin D, is important to maintain bone health. Evidence suggests that a deficiency in micronutrients may contribute to bone loss during aging and exert generalized effects on chronic inflammation. Recently, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was developed to assess the inflammatory potential of individual diets. Our aim was to evaluate the DII in a representative sample and verify its association with low-impact fractures.
Methods: Individuals from The Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS) database had their DII calculated. BRAZOS is an important cross-sectional epidemiological study carried out with a representative sample of men and women â„40 years old. The research was conducted through in-home interviews administered by a trained team. Nutrition Database System for Research (NDSR) software was used to analyze data on the intake of nutrients, which were employed to calculate the DII using Statistical Analysis Software (SASÂź) and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSSÂź) to assess its association with low-impact fractures.
Results: A total of 2269 subjects had their DII score calculated using information from 24-h recall data. Males had lower DII than females (DII = 1.12 ± 1.04 vs DII = 1.24 ± 0.99, p = 0.012). Women taking statins had lower DII (DII = 0.65 ± 1.14 vs DII + 1.26 ± 0.98, p = 0.002), indicating a greater potential for diet-related anti-inflammatory effects.
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that women might have a pro-inflammatory diet pattern compared to men. However, we did not find any association between DII scores and low-impact fractures

Antiparasitic Activity of Natural and Semi-Synthetic Tirucallane Triterpenoids from Schinus terebinthifolius (Anacardiaceae): Structure/Activity Relationships
Leishmaniasis and Chagas are diseases caused by parasitic protozoans that affect the poorest population in the World, causing a high mortality and morbidity. As a result of highly toxic and long-term treatments, the discovery of novel, safe and more efficacious drugs is essential. in this work, the in vitro antiparasitic activity and mammalian cytotoxicity of three natural tirucallane triterpenoids, isolated from leaves of Schinus terebinthifolius (Anacardiaceae), and nine semi-synthetic derivatives were investigated against Leishmania (L.) infantum and Trypanosoma cruzi. Trypomastigotes of T. cruzi were the most susceptible parasites and seven compounds demonstrated a trypanocidal activity with IC50 values in the range between 15 and 58 mu g/mL. Four compounds demonstrated selectivity towards the intracellular amastigotes of Leishmania, with IC50 values in the range between 28 and 97 mu g/mL. the complete characterization of triterpenoids was afforded after thorough analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data as well as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Integration of Women Veterans into VA Quality Improvement Research Efforts: What Researchers Need to Know
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other federal agencies require funded researchers to include women in their studies. Historically, many researchers have indicated they will include women in proportion to their VA representation or pointed to their numerical minority as justification for exclusion. However, womenâs participation in the militaryâcurrently 14% of active militaryâis rapidly changing veteran demographics, with women among the fastest growing segments of new VA users. These changes will require researchers to meet the challenge of finding ways to adequately represent women veterans for meaningful analysis. We describe women veteransâ health and health-care use, note how VA care is organized to meet their needs, report gender differences in quality, highlight national plans for women veteransâ quality improvement, and discuss VA womenâs health research. We then discuss challenges and potential solutions for increasing representation of women veterans in VA research, including steps for implementation research
Interaction between polymorphisms of the Human Leukocyte Antigen and HPV-16 Variants on the risk of invasive cervical cancer
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Persistent infection with oncogenic types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the major risk factor for invasive cervical cancer (ICC), and non-European variants of HPV-16 are associated with an increased risk of persistence and ICC. HLA class II polymorphisms are also associated with genetic susceptibility to ICC. Our aim is to verify if these associations are influenced by HPV-16 variability.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We characterized HPV-16 variants by PCR in 107 ICC cases, which were typed for <it>HLA-DQA1</it>, <it>DRB1 </it>and <it>DQB1 </it>genes and compared to 257 controls. We measured the magnitude of associations by logistic regression analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>European (E), Asian-American (AA) and African (Af) variants were identified. Here we show that inverse association between <it>DQB1*05 </it>(adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.39â1.12]) and HPV-16 positive ICC in our previous report was mostly attributable to AA variant carriers (OR = 0.27; 95%CI: 0.10â0.75). We observed similar proportions of <it>HLA DRB1*1302 </it>carriers in E-P positive cases and controls, but interestingly, this allele was not found in AA cases (p = 0.03, Fisher exact test). A positive association with <it>DRB1*15 </it>was observed in both groups of women harboring either E (OR = 2.99; 95% CI: 1.13â7.86) or AA variants (OR = 2.34; 95% CI: 1.00â5.46). There was an inverse association between <it>DRB1*04 </it>and ICC among women with HPV-16 carrying the 350T [83L] single nucleotide polymorphism in the <it>E6 </it>gene (OR = 0.27; 95% CI: 0.08â0.96). An inverse association between <it>DQB1*05 </it>and cases carrying 350G (83V) variants was also found (OR = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.15â0.89).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results suggest that the association between HLA polymorphism and risk of ICC might be influenced by the distribution of HPV-16 variants.</p
Native diversity buffers against severity of non-native tree invasions
Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species. Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies. Here, leveraging global tree databases, we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. Our global perspective of non-native tree invasion highlights that human drivers influence non-native tree presence, and that native phylogenetic and functional diversity have a critical role in the establishment and spread of subsequent invasions
LSST: from Science Drivers to Reference Design and Anticipated Data Products
(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in
the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of
science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will
have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is
driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking
an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and
mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at
Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m
effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel
camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second
exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given
night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000
square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5
point-source depth in a single visit in will be (AB). The
project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations
by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg with
, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, ,
covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time
will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a
18,000 deg region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the
anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to . The
remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a
Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. The goal is to make LSST data products,
including a relational database of about 32 trillion observations of 40 billion

The global biogeography of tree leaf form and habit
Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4âGt), 54% (335.7âGt), 22% (136.2âGt) and 3% (18.7âGt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17â34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling
Data standardization of plantâpollinator interactions
Background: Animal pollination is an important ecosystem function and service, ensuring both the integrity of natural systems
and human well-being. Although many knowledge shortfalls remain, some high-quality data sets on biological interactions are now
available. The development and adoption of standards for biodiversity data and metadata has promoted great advances in biological
data sharing and aggregation, supporting large-scale studies and science-based public policies. However, these standards are currently
not suitable to fully support interaction data sharing.
Results: Here we present a vocabulary of terms and a data model for sharing plantâpollinator interactions data based on the Darwin
Core standard. The vocabulary introduces 48 new terms targeting several aspects of plantâpollinator interactions and can be used to
capture information from different approaches and scales. Additionally, we provide solutions for data serialization using RDF, XML,
and DwC-Archives and recommendations of existing controlled vocabularies for some of the terms. Our contribution supports open
access to standardized data on plantâpollinator interactions.
Conclusions: The adoption of the vocabulary would facilitate data sharing to support studies ranging from the spatial and temporal
distribution of interactions to the taxonomic, phenological, functional, and phylogenetic aspects of plantâpollinator interactions. We
expect to fill data and knowledge gaps, thus further enabling scientific research on the ecology and evolution of plantâpollinator
communities, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the development of public policies. The proposed data model is
flexible and can be adapted for sharing other types of interactions data by developing discipline-specific vocabularies of termsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Altered adipocyte differentiation and unbalanced autophagy in type 2 Familial Partial Lipodystrophy: an in vitro and in vivo study of adipose tissue browning
Type-2 Familial Partial Lipodystrophy is caused by LMNA mutations. Patients gradually lose subcutaneous fat from the
limbs, while they accumulate adipose tissue in the face and neck. Several studies have demonstrated that autophagy is
involved in the regulation of adipocyte differentiation and the maintenance of the balance between white and brown
adipose tissue. We identified deregulation of autophagy in laminopathic preadipocytes before induction of
differentiation. Moreover, in differentiating white adipocyte precursors, we observed impairment of large lipid droplet
formation, altered regulation of adipose tissue genes, and expression of the brown adipose tissue marker UCP1.
Conversely, in lipodystrophic brown adipocyte precursors induced to differentiate, we noticed activation of autophagy,
formation of enlarged lipid droplets typical of white adipocytes, and dysregulation of brown adipose tissue genes. In
agreement with these in vitro results indicating conversion of FPLD2 brown preadipocytes toward the white lineage,
adipose tissue from FPLD2 patient neck, an area of brown adipogenesis, showed a white phenotype reminiscent of its
brown origin. Moreover, in vivo morpho-functional evaluation of fat depots in the neck area of three FPLD2 patients by
PET/CT analysis with cold stimulation showed the absence of brown adipose tissue activity. These findings highlight a
new pathogenetic mechanism leading to improper fat distribution in lamin A-linked lipodystrophies and show that
both impaired white adipocyte turnover and failure of adipose tissue browning contribute to disease.We thank FPLD2 patients for donating biological samples. We thank the Italian
