Laguerre polynomials and the inverse Laplace transform using discrete data

    Get PDF
We consider the problem of finding a function defined on (0,)(0,\infty) from a countable set of values of its Laplace transform. The problem is severely ill-posed. We shall use the expansion of the function in a series of Laguerre polynomials to convert the problem in an analytic interpolation problem. Then, using the coefficients of Lagrange polynomials we shall construct a stable approximation solution.Comment: 14 page

Copyright @ 2012 Elsevier B.V.This paper presents new formulations of the radial integration boundary integral equation (RIBIE) and the radial integration boundary integro-differential equation (RIBIDE) methods for the numerical solution of two-dimensional diffusion problems with variable coefficients. The methods use either a specially constructed parametrix (Levi function) or the standard fundamental solution for the Laplace equation to reduce the boundary-value problem (BVP) to a boundary–domain integral equation (BDIE) or boundary–domain integro-differential equation (BDIDE). The radial integration method (RIM) is then employed to convert the domain integrals arising in both BDIE and BDIDE methods into equivalent boundary integrals. The resulting formulations lead to pure boundary integral and integro-differential equations with no domain integrals. Furthermore, a subdomain decomposition technique (SDBDIE) is proposed, which leads to a sparse system of linear equations, thus avoiding the need to calculate a large number of domain integrals. Numerical examples are presented for several simple problems, for which exact solutions are available, to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approaches

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is considered one of the most effective technologies to improve the productivity of the building process. BIM has proven its advantages throughout the building project life cycle. However, the lack of awareness towards BIM is due to the persistent practice of obsolete technology in construction. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the industrial practitioners' perspectives on the benefits and hindrances of BIM implementation in order to understand their level of awareness. A questionnaire survey was distributed to 120 consultant companies in Kuala Lumpur where 52 responded. The data were analysed using frequency analysis and test for correlation was performed. Results revealed that respondents have a positive awareness of the benefits and hindrances towards the implementation of BIM. Both BIM and non-BIM users achieve a significant agreement on the benefits of BIM to control delay, cost, and improves management. On the other hand, all participants criticised that High Cost Allocation, Time Consuming, Lack of Information are hindering the implementation of BIM. In addition, there was a weak relationship between the BIM as a tool in company and the predictor variables which are level of understanding, time saving, cost saving, better management, cost allocation, time consumption and lack of awareness. The correlation coefficient values obtained were 0.419, 0.403, 0.376, 0.446, 0.324, 0.407 and 0.274 respectively. The outcomes indicate that construction industry experience constraint on implementing BIM mainly due to the BIM enforcement by the government industry. Thus, this paper is significant in contributing knowledge of awareness between BIM and non-BIM users on benefits and hindrances of BIM implementation. It also acts as a benchmark for the government to address the relevant issues provide a channel to drive the industry towards BIM level 2

Usability and performance measure of a consumer-grade brain computer interface system for environmental control by neurological patients

With the increasing incidence and prevalence of chronic brain injury patients and the current financial constraints in healthcare budgets, there is a need for a more intelligent way to realise the current practice of neuro-rehabilitation service provision. Brain-computer Interface (BCI) systems have the potential to address this issue to a certain extent only if carefully designed research can demonstrate that these systems are accurate, safe, cost-effective, are able to increase patient/carer satisfaction and enhance their quality of life. Therefore, one of the objectives of the proposed study was to examine whether participants (patients with brain injury and a sample of reference population) were able to use a low cost BCI system (Emotiv EPOC) to interact with a computer and to communicate via spelling words. Patients participated in the study did not have prior experience in using BCI headsets so as to measure the user experience in the first-exposure to BCI training. To measure emotional arousal of participants we used an ElectroDermal Activity Sensor (Qsensor by Affectiva). For the signal processing and feature extraction of imagery controls the Cognitive Suite of Emotiv's Control Panel was used. Our study reports the key findings based on data obtained from a group of patients and a sample reference population and presents the implications for the design and development of a BCI system for communication and control. The study also evaluates the performance of the system when used practically in context of an acute clinical environment

Let GSG_S be a graph with loops obtained from a graph GG of order nn and loops at SV(G)S \subseteq V(G). In this paper, we establish a neccesary and sufficient condition on the bipartititeness of a connected graph GG and the spectrum Spec(GSG_S) and Spec(GV(G)\SG_{V(G)\backslash S}). We also prove that for every SV(G)S \subseteq V(G), E(GS)E(G)E(G_S) \geq E(G) when GG is bipartite. Moreover, we provide an identification of the spectrum of complete graphs KnK_n and complete bipartite graphs Km,nK_{m,n} with loops. We characterize any graphs with loops of order n whose eigenvalues are all positive or non-negative, and also any graphs with a few distinct eigenvalues. Finally, we provide some bounds related to GSG_S.Comment: 16 pages, published versio

Financial development and economic growth in an oil-rich economy: The case of Saudi Arabia

© 2014 Elsevier B.V.We investigate the effect of financial development on economic growth in the context of Saudi Arabia, an oil-rich economy. In doing so, we distinguish between the effects of financial development on the oil and non-oil sectors of the economy. Using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds test technique, we find that financial development has a positive impact on the growth of the non-oil sector. In contrast, its impact on the oil-sector growth and total GDP growth is either negative or insignificant. This suggests that the relationship between financial development and growth may be fundamentally different in resource-dominated economies

Semantic Segmentation to Extract Coronary Arteries in Invasive Coronary Angiograms

    Get PDF
Accurate semantic segmentation of each coronary artery using invasive coronary angiography (ICA) is important for stenosis assessment and coronary artery disease (CAD) diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a multi-step semantic segmentation algorithm based on analyzing arterial segments extracted from ICAs. The proposed algorithm firstly extracts the entire arterial binary mask (binary vascular tree) using a deep learning-based method. Then we extract the centerline of the binary vascular tree and separate it into different arterial segments. Finally, by extracting the underlying arterial topology, position, and pixel features, we construct a powerful coronary artery segment classifier based on a support vector machine. Each arterial segment is classified into the left coronary artery (LCA), left anterior descending (LAD), and other types of arterial segments. The proposed method was tested on a dataset with 225 ICAs and achieved a mean accuracy of 70.33% for the multi-class artery classification and a mean intersection over union of 0.6868 for semantic segmentation of arteries. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which provides impressive performance for analyzing the individual arteries in ICAs

A Conceptual Design Framework based on TRIZ Scientific Effects and Patent Mining

    Get PDF
Conceptual design represents a critical initial design stage that involves both technical and creative thinking to develop and derive concept solutions to meet design requirements. TRIZ Scientific Effects (TRIZSE) is one of the TRIZ tools that utilize a database on functional, transformation, parameterization of scientific effects to provide conceptual solutions to engineering and design problems. Although TRIZSE has been introduced to help engineers solve design problems in the conceptual design phase, the current TRIZSE database presents general scientific concept solutions with a few examples of solutions from patents which are very abstract and not updated since its introduction. This research work explores the derivation of a novel framework that integrates TRIZ scientific effects to the current patent information (USPTO) using data mining techniques to develop a better design support tool to assist engineers in deriving innovative design concept solutions. This novel framework will provide better, updated, relevant and specific examples of conceptual design ideas from patents to engineers. The research used Python as the base programming platform to develop a conceptual design software prototype based on this new framework where both the TRIZSE Database and Patents Database (USPTO) are searched and processed in order to build a Doc2Vec similarity model. A case study on the corrosion of copper pipelines by seawater is presented to validate this novel framework and results of the novel TRIZSE Database and patents examples are presented and further discussed in this paper. The results of the case study indicated that the Doc2Vec model is able to perform its intended similarity queries. The patent examples from results of the case study warrant further consideration in conceptual design activities

This study is to review the source, development, and evolution of Chinese documentary programs through the historical dimension; it can better draw production experience and improve the creative ability for the producers. From the founding of China to the present, the changes of Chinese documentary programs can be divided into six different historical stages. Moreover, the content of Chinese documentary programs has origins in China's political background, especially Chinese unique social nature and cultural traditions. As a result, they continue to evolve as China changes. In particular, with the rapid development of China's economy, on the one hand, Chinese television stations continue to invest in the creation of documentary programs to consolidate their audience. On the other hand, online platforms have opened up new channels for viewing documentaries. Chinese documentary programs have become a window for audiences at home and abroad to learn about Chinese history, culture, and tradition. The use of Chinese documentary programs to tell China’s story will show the real, three-dimensional, and comprehensive picture of China to the whole world
