    Disk Imaging Survey of Chemistry with SMA: II. Southern Sky Protoplanetary Disk Data and Full Sample Statistics

    This is the second in a series of papers based on data from DISCS, a Submillimeter Array observing program aimed at spatially and spectrally resolving the chemical composition of 12 protoplanetary disks. We present data on six Southern sky sources - IM Lup, SAO 206462 (HD 135344b), HD 142527, AS 209, AS 205 and V4046 Sgr - which complement the six sources in the Taurus star forming region reported previously. CO 2-1 and HCO+ 3-2 emission are detected and resolved in all disks and show velocity patterns consistent with Keplerian rotation. Where detected, the emission from DCO+ 3-2, N2H+ 3-2, H2CO 3-2 and 4-3,HCN 3-2 and CN 2-1 are also generally spatially resolved. The detection rates are highest toward the M and K stars, while the F star SAO 206462 has only weak CN and HCN emission, and H2CO alone is detected toward HD 142527. These findings together with the statistics from the previous Taurus disks, support the hypothesis that high detection rates of many small molecules depend on the presence of a cold and protected disk midplane, which is less common around F and A stars compared to M and K stars. Disk-averaged variations in the proposed radiation tracer CN/HCN are found to be small, despite two orders of magnitude range of spectral types and accretion rates. In contrast, the resolved images suggest that the CN/HCN emission ratio varies with disk radius in at least two of the systems. There are no clear observational differences in the disk chemistry between the classical/full T Tauri disks and transitional disks. Furthermore, the observed line emission does not depend on measured accretion luminosities or the number of infrared lines detected, which suggests that the chemistry outside of 100 AU is not coupled to the physical processes that drive the chemistry in the innermost few AU.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ, 41 pages including 7 figure

    A Combined Spitzer and Herschel Infrared Study of Gas and Dust in the Circumbinary Disk Orbiting V4046 Sgr

    We present results from a spectroscopic Spitzer and Herschel mid-to-far-infrared study of the circumbinary disk orbiting the evolved (age ~12-23 Myr) close binary T Tauri system V4046 Sgr. Spitzer IRS spectra show emission lines of [Ne II], H_2 S(1), CO_2 and HCN, while Herschel PACS and SPIRE spectra reveal emission from [O I], OH, and tentative detections of H_2O and high-J transitions of CO. We measure [Ne III]/[Ne II] < 0.13, which is comparable to other X-ray/EUV luminous T Tauri stars that lack jets. We use the H_2 S(1) line luminosity to estimate the gas mass in the relatively warm surface layers of the inner disk. The presence of [O I] emission suggests that CO, H_2O, and/or OH is being photodissociated, and the lack of [C I] emission suggests any excess C may be locked up in HCN, CN and other organic molecules. Modeling of silicate dust grain emission features in the mid-infrared indicates that the inner disk is composed mainly of large (r~5 um) amorphous pyroxene and olivine grains (~86% by mass) with a relatively large proportion of crystalline silicates. These results are consistent with other lines of evidence indicating that planet building is ongoing in regions of the disk within ~30 AU of the central, close binary.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables.     Exploring the chemical link between local ellipticals and their high-redshift progenitors

    We present Keck/MOSFIRE K-band spectroscopy of the first mass-selected sample of galaxies at z2.3z\sim2.3. Targets are selected from the 3D-HST Treasury survey. The six detected galaxies have a mean [NII]λ\lambda6584/Hα\alpha ratio of 0.27±0.010.27\pm0.01, with a small standard deviation of 0.05. This mean value is similar to that of UV-selected galaxies of the same mass. The mean gas-phase oxygen abundance inferred from the [NII]/Hα\alpha ratios depends on the calibration method, and ranges from 12+log(O/H)gas=8.57_{gas}=8.57 for the {Pettini} & {Pagel} (2004) calibration to 12+log(O/H)gas=8.87_{gas}= 8.87 for the {Maiolino} {et~al.} (2008) calibration. Measurements of the stellar oxygen abundance in nearby quiescent galaxies with the same number density indicate 12+log(O/H)stars=8.95_{stars}= 8.95, similar to the gas-phase abundances of the z2.3z\sim2.3 galaxies if the {Maiolino} {et~al.} (2008) calibration is used. This suggests that these high-redshift star forming galaxies may be progenitors of today's massive early-type galaxies. The main uncertainties are the absolute calibration of the gas-phase oxygen abundance and the incompleteness of the z2.3z\sim2.3 sample: the galaxies with detected Hα\alpha tend to be larger and have higher star formation rates than the galaxies without detected Hα\alpha, and we may still be missing the most dust-obscured progenitors.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures.     One Hundred Years of \u3cem\u3eMorales y Benet v. La Junta Local de Inscripciones\u3c/em\u3e: The Use of the Insular Cases to Deny Women’s Voting Rights in Puerto Rico

    The centenary of Morales y Benet provides an opportunity to reflect on the inequalities women faced under Puerto Rican colonialism in the early 20th century, shaped by the legal imperialism of the United States over the archipelago. This article explores the holding in Morales y Benet v. La Junta Local de Inscripciones and its impact on women’s lives during the last 100 years. The decision in Morales y Benet came at a time when women in the mainland United States had already secured the right to vote, following decades of suffrage activism that culminated in the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. However, Puerto Rico’s status as an unincorporated territory under U.S. sovereignty imposed a different legal framework on the island. The Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, drawing on the Insular Cases concluded that the Nineteenth Amendment did not apply to Puerto Rico, leaving women on the island without the same constitutional protections enjoyed by their counterparts in the mainland. As we reflect on the centennial of Morales y Benet, it becomes essential to examine the ways in which colonialism facilitated the exclusion of Puerto Rican women from the democratic process. This case serves as a lens through which we can explore how the intersection of gender and colonial status denied basic rights to U.S. citizens residing in Puerto Rico. By analyzing the legal reasoning behind this decision, we gain a deeper understanding of the broader implications of U.S. colonial rule and its impact on the fight for women’s suffrage in Puerto Rico

    A 1.3 mm SMA Survey of 29 Variable Young Stellar Objects

Young stellar objects (YSOs) may undergo periods of active accretion (outbursts), during which the protostellar accretion rate is temporarily enhanced by a few orders of magnitude. Whether or not these accretion outburst YSOs possess similar dust and gas reservoirs to each other, and whether or not their dust and gas reservoirs are similar as quiescent YSOs, are issues yet to be clarified.Aims. The aim of this work is to characterize the millimeter thermal dust emission properties of a statistically significant sample of long and short duration accretion outburst YSOs (i.e., FUors and EXors) and the spectroscopically identified candidates of accretion outbursting YSOs (i.e., FUor-like objects). Methods. We have carried out extensive Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations mostly at ~225 GHz (1.33 mm) and ~272 GHz (1.10 mm), from 2008 to 2017. We covered accretion outburst YSOs located at 3σ significance. Detected sources except for the two cases of V883 Ori and NGC 2071 MM3 were observed with ~1″ angular resolution. Overall our observed targets show a systematically higher millimeter luminosity distribution than those of the M ∗ > 0.3 MClass II YSOs in the nearby (400 pc) low-mass star-forming molecular clouds (e.g., Taurus, Lupus, Upp Scorpio, and Chameleon I). In addition, at 1 mm our observed confirmed binaries or triple-system sources are systematically fainter than the rest of the sources even though their 1 mm fluxes are broadly distributed. We may have detected ∼30-60% millimeter flux variability from V2494 Cyg and V2495 Cyg, from the observations separated by approximately one year.Peer reviewe

    SPIRITS 15c and SPIRITS 14buu: Two Obscured Supernovae in the Nearby Star-Forming Galaxy IC 2163

    SPIRITS---SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey---is an ongoing survey of nearby galaxies searching for infrared (IR) transients with Spitzer/IRAC. We present the discovery and follow-up observations of one of our most luminous (M[4.5]=17.1±0.4M_{[4.5]} = -17.1\pm0.4 mag, Vega) and red ([3.6][4.5]=3.0±0.2[3.6] - [4.5] = 3.0 \pm 0.2 mag) transients, SPIRITS 15c. The transient was detected in a dusty spiral arm of IC 2163 (D35.5D\approx35.5 Mpc). Pre-discovery ground-based imaging revealed an associated, shorter-duration transient in the optical and near-IR (NIR). NIR spectroscopy showed a broad (8400\approx 8400 km s1^{-1}), double-peaked emission line of He I at 1.083μ1.083 \mum, indicating an explosive origin. The NIR spectrum of SPIRITS 15c is similar to that of the Type IIb SN 2011dh at a phase of 200\approx 200 days. Assuming AV=2.2A_V = 2.2 mag of extinction in SPIRITS 15c provides a good match between their optical light curves. The IR light curves and the extreme [3.6][4.5][3.6]-[4.5] color cannot be explained using only a standard extinction law. Another luminous (M4.5=16.1±0.4M_{4.5} = -16.1\pm0.4 mag) event, SPIRITS 14buu, was serendipitously discovered in the same galaxy. The source displays an optical plateau lasting 80\gtrsim 80 days, and we suggest a scenario similar to the low-luminosity Type IIP SN 2005cs obscured by AV1.5A_V \approx 1.5 mag. Other classes of IR-luminous transients can likely be ruled out in both cases. If both events are indeed SNe, this may suggest 18%\gtrsim 18\% of nearby core-collapse SNe are missed by currently operating optical surveys.Comment: 19 pages, 7 Figures, 4 Table
