First epidemiological description of visceral leishmaniasis in Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul
Foi realizado estudo epidemiológico sobre casos de leishmaniose visceral notificados em Campo Grande de 2001 a 2006, utilizando-se dados do Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação. Foram registradas 577 notificações com incidência de 1,47 casos/100.000hab em 2001, chegando a 20,98 casos /100.000hab em 2006, com notificações todos os meses a partir de 2002. Crianças até nove anos contribuíram com 40% dos casos. O sexo masculino contribuiu com 64% das notificações e o sexo feminino com 36%. A letalidade variou de 5% a 11%, com média de 8%. Dos 44 óbitos, 33 (75%) ocorreram no sexo masculino e 11 (25%) no sexo feminino. Embora os idosos tenham contribuído com 9% dos casos, a mortalidade entre eles alcançou 39%. Foram 27 casos de co-infecção Leishmania/HIV (5%) com letalidade de 15%, a maioria em homens dos 20 aos 49 anos. Constatou-se processo de endemização da doença com elevada incidência.An epidemiological study was conducted on cases of visceral leishmaniasis that were notified in Campo Grande between 2001 and 2006, using data from the Brazilian information system for notifiable diseases (Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação, SINAN). In 2001, 577 cases were notified, giving an incidence of 1.47 cases/100,000. This rose to 20.98 cases/100,000 in 2006. From 2002 onwards, new cases were notified every month. Children up to nine years of age accounted for 40% of the cases. Males accounted for 64% of the cases and females, 36%. The death rate ranged from 5 to 11%, with a mean of 8%. Among the 44 deaths, 33 (75%) were male cases and 11 (25%) were female cases. Although elderly people accounted for 9% of the cases, mortality among them reached 39%. There were 27 cases of Leishmania /HIV coinfection (5%), with a mortality rate of 15%, mostly among men aged 20 to 49 years. Ocorrência de Listeria spp. em salame tipo Italiano comercializados em supermercados do bairro de Casa Amarela, Recife-PE
Atualmente, os alimentos prontos para consumo têm se popularizado. Isto se deve ao fato da conveniência e propriedades nutricionais encontradas nesses produtos. Embora sofram processamento tecnológico na fabricação, falhas higiênico-sanitárias podem se tornar um sério risco à saúde do consumidor devido à veiculação de patógenos. Dentre estes, destaca-se o gênero Listeria que tem importância para a indústria de alimentos e saúde pública. Assim, objetivou-se neste estudo a detecção de Listeria spp. em salames tipo Italiano fatiados, embalados a vácuo e comercializados em supermercados do bairro de Casa Amarela, Recife-PE. Foram coletadas 22 amostras de salames tipo Italiano fatiados, embalados a vácuo das três principais marcas brasileiras, estas foram analisadas de acordo com a metodologia da Instrução Normativa de nº62/2003 do Ministério da Agricultura Pecuária e Abastecimento. Dentre as amostras estudadas foi detectada uma ocorrência de 13,64% (3/22), este dado revela possíveis falhas na elaboração do alimento estudado, além de evidenciar a presença de Listeria spp. em salames tipo Italiano fatiados e embalados a vácuo
The AlfaCrux CubeSat mission description and early results
On 1 April 2022, the AlfaCrux CubeSat was launched by the Falcon 9 Transporter-4 mission, the fourth SpaceX dedicated smallsat rideshare program mission, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida into a Sun-synchronous orbit at 500 km. AlfaCrux is an amateur radio and educational mission to provide learning and scientific benefits in the context of small satellite missions. It is an opportunity for theoretical and practical learning about the technical management, systems design, communication, orbital mechanics, development, integration, and operation of small satellites. The AlfaCrux payload, a software-defined radio hardware, is responsible for two main services, which are a digital packet repeater and a store-and-forward system. In the ground segment, a cloud-computing-based command and control station has been developed, together with an open access online platform to access and visualize the main information of the AlfaCrux telemetry and user data and experiments. It also becomes an in-orbit database reference to be used for different studies concerned with, for instance, radio propagation, attitude reconstruction, data-driven calibration algorithms for satellite sensors, among others. In this context, this paper describes the AlfaCrux mission, its main subsystems, and the achievements obtained in the early orbit phase. Scientific and engineering assessments conducted with the spacecraft operations to tackle unexpected behaviors in the ground station and also to better understand the space environment are also presented and discussed.Fundação de Apoio à Pesquisa del Distrito Federal (FAPDF), Brasil | Ref. Three-Year Clinical Follow-Up of Children Intrauterine Exposed to Zika Virus
Congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) infection may present with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. Some sequelae, particularly neurodevelopmental problems, may have a later onset. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 799 high-risk pregnant women who were followed up until delivery. Eighty-three women and/or newborns were considered ZIKV exposed and/or infected. Laboratory diagnosis was made by polymerase chain reaction in the pregnant mothers and their respective newborns, as well as Dengue virus, Chikungunya virus, and ZIKV serology. Serology for toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and syphilis infections were also performed in microcephalic newborns. The newborns included in the study were followed up until their third birthday. Developmental delay was observed in nine patients (13.2%): mild cognitive delay in three patients, speech delay in three patients, autism spectrum disorder in two patients, and severe neurological abnormalities in one microcephalic patient; sensorineural hearing loss, three patients and dysphagia, six patients. Microcephaly due to ZIKV occurred in three patients (3.6%). Clinical manifestations can appear after the first year of life in children infected/exposed to ZIKV, emphasizing the need for long-term follow-up
Effects of climate change on marine coastal ecosystems - A review to guide research and management

However, marine and coastal ecosystems respond differently to climate change-related stressors depending on the ecosystem, species composition and interactions, geomorphologic settings, and spatial distribution, but also on the presence of local stressors interacting cumulatively with climate change-related pressures. Our paper provides a comprehensive review of the current literature about the effects of climate-related pressures on marine and coastal ecosystems and how local stressors affect their resilience. Our work focuses on key marine and coastal ecosystems from three ecoregions: the Caribbean Sea (coral reefs, mangrove forests, seagrass beds), the Mediterranean Sea (the coral Cladocora caespitosa, maërl beds and seagrass beds) and the North-East Atlantic, which include kelp forests, maërl beds, salt marshes and seagrass beds. This review highlights the need for a more comprehensive, multi-species, and multi-stressors approach to predict better changes at the ecosystem and seascape levels of marine and coastal ecosystems. Nevertheless, there is enough evidence to argue that addressing locally key manageable stressors common to multiple ecosystems, such as nutrient enrichment, coastal development, hydrologic disturbances, anchoring or sedimentation, will reduce the identified adverse effects of climate change. Marine algal flora of Santa Maria Island, Azores

The algal flora of the Island of Santa Maria (eastern group of the Azores archipelago) has
attracted interest of researchers on past occasions (Drouët 1866, Agardh 1870, Trelease
1897, Schmidt 1931, Ardré et al. 1974, Fralick and Hehre 1990, Neto et al. 1991, Morton
and Britton 2000, Amen et al. 2005, Wallenstein and Neto 2006, Tittley et al. 2009,Wallenstein et al. 2009a, Wallenstein et al. 2010, Botelho et al. 2010, Torres et al. 2010,
León-Cisneros et al. 2011, Martins et al. 2014, Micael et al. 2014, Rebelo et al. 2014, Ávila
et al. 2015, Ávila et al. 2016, Machín-Sánchez et al. 2016, Uchman et al. 2016, Johnson et
al. 2017, Parente et al. 2018). Nevertheless, the Island macroalgal flora is not well-known
as published information reflects limited collections obtained in short-term visits by
scientists. To overcome this, a thorough investigation, encompassing collections and
presence data recording, was undertaken at both the littoral and sublittoral levels down to a
depth of approximately 40 m, covering an area of approximately 64 km . The resultant
taxonomic records are listed in the present paper which also provides information on
species ecology and occurrence around the Island, improving, thereby, the knowledge of
the Azorean macroalgal flora at both local and regional scales.
New information
A total of 2329 specimens (including some taxa identified only to genus level) belonging to
261 taxa of macroalgae are registered, comprising 152 Rhodophyta, 43 Chlorophyta and
66 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae). Of these, 174 were identified to species level (102
Rhodophyta, 29 Chlorophyta and 43 Ochrophyta), encompassing 52 new records for the
Island (30 Rhodophyta, 9 Chlorophyta and 13 Ochrophyta), 2 Macaronesian endemics
(Laurencia viridis Gil-Rodríguez & Haroun; and Millerella tinerfensis (Seoane-Camba)
S.M.Boo & J.M.Rico), 10 introduced (the Rhodophyta Acrothamnion preissii (Sonder)
E.M.Wollaston, Antithamnion hubbsii E.Y.Dawson, Asparagopsis armata Harvey,
Bonnemaisonia hamifera Hariot, Melanothamnus harveyi (Bailey) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs,

Non-indigenous species refined national baseline inventories : A synthesis in the context of the European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive
Refined baseline inventories of non-indigenous species (NIS) are set per European Union Member State (MS), in the context of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The inventories are based on the initial assessment of the MSFD (2012) and the updated data of the European Alien Species Information Network, in collaboration with NIS experts appointed by the MSs. The analysis revealed that a large number of NIS was not reported from the initial assessments. Moreover, several NIS initially listed are currently considered as native in Europe or were proven to be historical misreportings. The refined baseline inventories constitute a milestone for the MSFD Descriptor 2 implementation, providing an improved basis for reporting new NIS introductions, facilitating the MSFD D2 assessment. In addition, the inventories can help MSs in the establishment of monitoring systems of targeted NIS, and foster cooperation on monitoring of NIS across or within shared marine subregions.

Global disparities in surgeons’ workloads, academic engagement and rest periods: the on-calL shIft fOr geNEral SurgeonS (LIONESS) study
: The workload of general surgeons is multifaceted, encompassing not only surgical procedures but also a myriad of other responsibilities. From April to May 2023, we conducted a CHERRIES-compliant internet-based survey analyzing clinical practice, academic engagement, and post-on-call rest. The questionnaire featured six sections with 35 questions. Statistical analysis used Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and logistic regression (SPSS® v. 28). The survey received a total of 1.046 responses (65.4%). Over 78.0% of responders came from Europe, 65.1% came from a general surgery unit; 92.8% of European and 87.5% of North American respondents were involved in research, compared to 71.7% in Africa. Europe led in publishing research studies (6.6 ± 8.6 yearly). Teaching involvement was high in North America (100%) and Africa (91.7%). Surgeons reported an average of 6.7 ± 4.9 on-call shifts per month, with European and North American surgeons experiencing 6.5 ± 4.9 and 7.8 ± 4.1 on-calls monthly, respectively. African surgeons had the highest on-call frequency (8.7 ± 6.1). Post-on-call, only 35.1% of respondents received a day off. Europeans were most likely (40%) to have a day off, while African surgeons were least likely (6.7%). On the adjusted multivariable analysis HDI (Human Development Index) (aOR 1.993) hospital capacity > 400 beds (aOR 2.423), working in a specialty surgery unit (aOR 2.087), and making the on-call in-house (aOR 5.446), significantly predicted the likelihood of having a day off after an on-call shift. Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial
Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials.
Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure.
Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.
