    MAAP Transition from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 21001:2018 the new quality standard in education organization

    Sustainable success has become an ever-more-important future goal in all industries but challenges arise from the advent of fourth industrial revolution and revisions of national and international regulations directly affect the shipping industry trickling down to the Maritime Education and Training Institutions (METI). Thus, a metamorphosis of standards for a maritime school like the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) transitioning to a more tailor-fit Quality Standards is inevitable to manage the changes in educational organizations. ISO 21001:2018 has been published in oder to replace IWA 2:2007. This prompted the Academy to evolve from the traditional ISO 9001:2015 standard. This paper aims to discuss the STCW ’78 (as amended) requirements for Quality Standard System and how the new standard in educational and training organizations complies with it. The paper shall also serve as a resource and reference for those schools that are looking for standards that can attune their management systems gearing towards safer, cleaner, and excellent shipping by having a competent seafarer through a certified Educational Organization Management System. With the vision of the academy to be the leading institution of excellence in maritime and training the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, certification with the standard is indeed a milestone and breakthrough

    Continuous and Long-Term Volume Measurements with a Commercial Coulter Counter

    We demonstrate a method to enhance the time resolution of a commercial Coulter counter and enable continuous and long-term cell size measurements for growth rate analyses essential to understanding basic cellular processes, such as cell size regulation and cell cycle progression. Our simple modifications to a commercial Coulter counter create controllable cell culture conditions within the sample compartment and combine temperature control with necessary adaptations to achieve measurement stability over several hours. We also wrote custom software, detailed here, to analyze instrument data files collected by either this continuous method or standard, periodic sampling. We use the continuous method to measure the growth rate of yeast in G1 during a prolonged arrest and, in different samples, the dependency of growth rate on cell size and cell cycle position in arrested and proliferating cells. We also quantify with high time resolution the response of mouse lymphoblast cell culture to drug treatment.     The 2-degree Field Lensing Survey: design and clustering measurements

    We present the 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS), a new galaxy redshift survey performed at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. 2dFLenS is the first wide-area spectroscopic survey specifically targeting the area mapped by deep-imaging gravitational lensing fields, in this case the Kilo-Degree Survey. 2dFLenS obtained 70 079 redshifts in the range z < 0.9 over an area of 731 deg2, and is designed to extend the data sets available for testing gravitational physics and promote the development of relevant algorithms for joint imaging and spectroscopic analysis. The redshift sample consists first of 40 531 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs), which enable analyses of galaxy–galaxy lensing, redshift-space distortion, and the overlapping source redshift distribution by cross-correlation. An additional 28 269 redshifts form a magnitude-limited (r < 19.5) nearly complete subsample, allowing direct source classification and photometric-redshift calibration. In this paper, we describe the motivation, target selection, spectroscopic observations, and clustering analysis of 2dFLenS. We use power spectrum multipole measurements to fit the redshift-space distortion parameter of the LRG sample in two redshift ranges 0.15 < z < 0.43 and 0.43 < z < 0.7 as β = 0.49 ± 0.15 and β = 0.26 ± 0.09, respectively. These values are consistent with those obtained from LRGs in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. 2dFLenS data products will be released via our website http://2dflens.swin.edu.au

    Strong detection of the CMB lensingxgalaxy weak lensingcross-correlation from ACT-DR4,PlanckLegacy and KiDS-1000

    We measure the cross-correlation between galaxy weak lensing data from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS-1000, DR4) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT, DR4) and the Planck Legacy survey. We use two samples of source galaxies, selected with photometric redshifts, (0.1<zB<1.2)(0.1<z_{\rm B}<1.2) and (1.2<zB<2)(1.2<z_{\rm B}<2), which produce a combined detection significance of the CMB lensing/weak galaxy lensing cross-spectrum of 7.7σ7.7\sigma. With the lower redshift galaxy sample, for which the cross-correlation is detected at a significance of 5.3σ5.3\sigma, we present joint cosmological constraints on the matter density parameter, Ωm\Omega_{\rm m}, and the matter fluctuation amplitude parameter, σ8\sigma_8, marginalising over three nuisance parameters that model our uncertainty in the redshift and shear calibration, and the intrinsic alignment of galaxies. We find our measurement to be consistent with the best-fitting flat Λ\LambdaCDM cosmological models from both Planck and KiDS-1000. We demonstrate the capacity of CMB-weak lensing cross-correlations to set constraints on either the redshift or shear calibration, by analysing a previously unused high-redshift KiDS galaxy sample (1.2<zB<2)(1.2<z_{\rm B}<2), with the cross-correlation detected at a significance of 7σ7\sigma. This analysis provides an independent assessment for the accuracy of redshift measurements in a regime that is challenging to calibrate directly owing to known incompleteness in spectroscopic surveys.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 tables, submitted to A&

    A framework for the development of a global standardised marine taxon reference image database (SMarTaR-ID) to support image-based analyses

    Video and image data are regularly used in the field of benthic ecology to document biodiversity. However, their use is subject to a number of challenges, principally the identification of taxa within the images without associated physical specimens. The challenge of applying traditional taxonomic keys to the identification of fauna from images has led to the development of personal, group, or institution level reference image catalogues of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) or morphospecies. Lack of standardisation among these reference catalogues has led to problems with observer bias and the inability to combine datasets across studies. In addition, lack of a common reference standard is stifling efforts in the application of artificial intelligence to taxon identification. Using the North Atlantic deep sea as a case study, we propose a database structure to facilitate standardisation of morphospecies image catalogues between research groups and support future use in multiple front-end applications. We also propose a framework for coordination of international efforts to develop reference guides for the identification of marine species from images. The proposed structure maps to the Darwin Core standard to allow integration with existing databases. We suggest a management framework where high-level taxonomic groups are curated by a regional team, consisting of both end users and taxonomic experts. We identify a mechanism by which overall quality of data within a common reference guide could be raised over the next decade. Finally, we discuss the role of a common reference standard in advancing marine ecology and supporting sustainable use of this ecosystem
