Corrosion behaviour of PEEK or β-TCP-impregnated Ti6Al4V SLM structures targeting biomedical applications
This work was supported by FCT through the grants PD/BD/140202/2018, SFRH/BD/140191/2018 and SFRH/BD/128657/2017, and the projects PTDC/EMSTEC/
5422/2014 and NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000018-HAMaBICo. Additionally, this work was supported by FCT with the reference project UID/EEA/04436/2019. F. TOPTAN is grateful for the financial support through the M-ERA-NET/0001/2015 project (FCT).Ti6Al4V cellular structures were produced by selective laser melting (SLM) and then filled either with beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) or PEEK (poly-ether-ether-ketone) through powder metallurgy techniques, to improve osteoconductivity and wear resistance. The corrosion behavior of these structures was explored considering its importance for the long-term performance of implants. Results revealed that the incorporation of open cellular pores induced higher electrochemical kinetics when being compared with dense structures. The impregnation of β-TCP and PEEK led to the creation of voids or gaps between the metallic matrix and the impregnated material which also influenced the corrosion behavior of the cellular structures.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

PLS-R Calibration models for wine spirit volatile phenols pre-diction by near infrared spectroscopy
Near-infrared spectroscopic (NIR) technique was used, for the first time, to predict volatile
phenols content, namely guaiacol, 4-methyl-guaiacol, eugenol, syringol, 4-methyl-syringol and 4-
allyl-syringol, of aged wine spirits (AWS). This study aimed to develop calibration models for the
volatile phenol’s quantification in AWS, by NIR, faster and without sample preparation. Partial
least square regression (PLS-R) models were developed with NIR spectra in the near-IR region
(12,500–4000 cm1) and those obtained from GC-FID quantification after liquid-liquid extraction. In
the PLS-R developed method, cross-validation with 50% of the samples along a validation test set
with 50% of the remaining samples. The final calibration was performed with 100% of the data. PLS-R
models with a good accuracy were obtained for guaiacol (r2 = 96.34; RPD = 5.23), 4-methyl-guaiacol
(r2 = 96.1; RPD = 5.07), eugenol (r2 = 96.06; RPD = 5.04), syringol (r2 = 97.32; RPD = 6.11), 4-methylsyringol
(r2 = 95.79; RPD = 4.88) and 4-allyl-syringol (r2 = 95.97; RPD = 4.98). These results reveal that
NIR is a valuable technique for the quality control of wine spirits and to predict the volatile phenols
content, which contributes to the sensory quality of the spirit beveragesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Analysis of overall utilization of sugarcane biomass and waste from the production of sugar and ethanol for cogeneration in a Brazilian sugarcane mill
Paper presented to the 10th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Florida, 14-16 July 2014.This work presents thermodynamic, thermoeconomic and economic analyses of biomass gasification systems integration in a sugar-ethanol factory. Four configurations, combining the actual cogeneration plant with straw and stillage gasification systems, are considered. Case 1 represents a steam plant of a modern conventional power plant (base case), with a steam boiler of high-pressure and high-temperature, as well as an extraction-condensation steam turbine, being all mechanical driving electrified. In the other cases, gasification systems are associated to the actual plant using the energy from a gas turbine and a heat recovery steam generator to complete a combined cycle. In Case 2, the incorporation of a system for biodigestion of stillage is experimented. In Case 3, the incorporation of the sugar-cane straw gasification in the current plant is considered and Case 4 considers the gasification of straw and stillage.cf201

Measurement of spin correlation in ttbar production using dilepton final states
We measure the correlation between the spin of the top quark and the spin of
the anti-top quark in (ttbar -> W+ W- b bbar -> l+ nu b l- nubar bbar) final
states produced in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96
TeV, where l is an electron or muon. The data correspond to an integrated
luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 and were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab
Tevatron collider. The correlation is extracted from the angles of the two
leptons in the t and tbar rest frames, yielding a correlation strength C=
0.10^{+0.45}_{-0.45}, in agreement with the NLO QCD prediction within two
standard deviations, but also in agreement with the no correlation hypothesis.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PL
