Oral Infections and the Risk of Mortality in the Iron Age
Medically unattended oral abscesses may spread to their surrounding area or even throught the entire body. Depending on the individual`s constitution, such processes may lead to a life-threatening situation or death. (Pre)historic case studies deliver more information about distribution and adverse effects of oral infections and the risk of mortality. In this particular case report an iron aged skeleton of a 35- to 45-year-old woman from Eulau (Naumburg/ Saale, Germany) shows multiple periapical lesions and their effects on the viscerocranium. Furthermore, alterations on the long bones can be associated with chronic inflammation processes
Structural and Functional Insights into Endoglin Ligand Recognition and Binding
Endoglin, a type I membrane glycoprotein expressed as a disulfide-linked homodimer on human vascular endothelial cells, is a component of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-ÎČ receptor complex and is implicated in a dominant vascular dysplasia known as hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia as well as in preeclampsia. It interacts with the type I TGF-ÎČ signaling receptor activin receptor-like kinase (ALK)1 and modulates cellular responses to Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP)-9 and BMP-10. Structurally, besides carrying a zona pellucida (ZP) domain, endoglin contains at its N-terminal extracellular region a domain of unknown function and without homology to any other known protein, therefore called the orphan domain (OD). In this study, we have determined the recognition and binding ability of full length ALK1, endoglin and constructs encompassing the OD to BMP-9 using combined methods, consisting of surface plasmon resonance and cellular assays. ALK1 and endoglin ectodomains bind, independently of their glycosylation state and without cooperativity, to different sites of BMP-9. The OD comprising residues 22 to 337 was identified among the present constructs as the minimal active endoglin domain needed for partner recognition. These studies also pinpointed to Cys350 as being responsible for the dimerization of endoglin. In contrast to the complete endoglin ectodomain, the OD is a monomer and its small angle X-ray scattering characterization revealed a compact conformation in solution into which a de novo model was fitted
Anthropic resource exploitation and use of the territory at the onset of social complexity in the Neolithic-Chalcolithic Western Pyrenees: a multi-isotope approach
Carbon (ÎŽ13C) and nitrogen (ÎŽ15N) stable isotope analyses from bone collagen provide information about the dietary protein input, while strontium isotopes (87Sr/86Sr) from tooth enamel give us data about provenance and potential territorial mobility of past populations. To date, isotopic results on the prehistory of the Western Pyrenees are scarce. In this article, we report human and faunal values of the mentioned isotopes from the Early-Middle Neolithic site of Fuente Hoz (Anuntzeta) and the Late Neolithic/Early Chalcolithic site of Kurtzebide (Letona, Zigoitia). The main objectives of this work are to analyze the dietary and territorial mobility patterns of these populations. Furthermore, as an additional aim, we will try to discuss social ranking based on the isotope data and existing literature on this topic in the region of study. Our results show that, based on the bioavailable Sr values, both purported local and non-local humans were buried together at the sites. Additionally, they suggest similar resource consumption based on C3 terrestrial resources (i.e. ovicaprids, bovids, and suids) as the main part of the protein input. Overall, this study sheds light on how individuals from different backgrounds were still buried together and shared the same dietary lifestyle at a time in the Prehistory of Iberia when social complexities started to appear
Dental metric standards for sex estimation in archaeological populations from Iran
Sex estimation of skeletal remains is one of the major components of forensic
identification of unknown individuals. Teeth are a potential source of information on
sex and are often recovered in archaeological or forensic contexts due to their post-mortem
longevity. Currently there is limited data on dental sexual dimorphism of
archaeological populations from Iran. This dissertation represents the first study to
provide a dental sex estimation method for Iron Age populations.
The current study was conducted on the skeletal remains of 143 adults from two Iron
Age populations in close temporal and geographic proximity in the Solduz Valley
(West Azerbaijan Province of Iran). 2D and 3D cervical mesiodistal and buccolingual
and root volume measurements of maxillary and mandibular teeth were used to
investigate the degree of sexual dimorphism in permanent dentition and to assess their
applicability in sex estimation. In total 1327, 457, and 480 anterior and posterior teeth
were used to collect 2D cervical, 3D cervical, and root volume measurements
respectively. 2D cervical measurements were taken using Hillson-Fitzgerald dental
calliper and 3D measurements were collected using CT images provided by Open
Research Scan Archive (ORSA) - Penn Museum. 3D models of the teeth were created
using manual segmentation in the Amira 6.01 software package. Since tooth density
largely differs from crown to apex, root segmentation required two threshold levels:
the segmentation of the root from the jaw and the segmentation of the crown from the
root. Thresholds used for root segmentation were calculated using the half maximum
height protocol of Spoor et al. (1993) for each skull, and thresholds used for crown
segmentation were set visually for each tooth separately. Data was analysed using
discriminant function analysis and posterior probabilities were calculated for all
produced formulae where sex was previously assessed from morphological features of
pelvis and skull. Bootstrapping was used to account for small sample sizes in the
analysis. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 23. The percentage of sexual
dimorphism was also used to quantify the amount of sexual dimorphism in the sample.
The results showed that incisors and canines were the most sexually dimorphic teeth,
providing percentages of correct sex classification between 80% and 100% depending
on the measurement used. Root volume measurement was shown to be the most
sexually dimorphic variable providing an accuracy of over 90% in all functions.
The present study provided the first dental metric standards for sex estimation using
odontometric data in Iranian archaeological populations. Dental measurements,
particularly root volume measurements, were found to be of value for sex assessment
and the method presented here could be a useful tool for establishing accurate
demographic data from skeletal remains of the Iron Age from Iran
Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC
DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6Â Ă Â 6Â Ă Â 6Â m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7Â m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties
International Consensus Statement on Rhinology and Allergy: Rhinosinusitis
Background: The 5 years since the publication of the first International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Rhinosinusitis (ICARâRS) has witnessed foundational progress in our understanding and treatment of rhinologic disease. These advances are reflected within the more than 40 new topics covered within the ICARâRSâ2021 as well as updates to the original 140 topics. This executive summary consolidates the evidenceâbased findings of the document. Methods: ICARâRS presents over 180 topics in the forms of evidenceâbased reviews with recommendations (EBRRs), evidenceâbased reviews, and literature reviews. The highest grade structured recommendations of the EBRR sections are summarized in this executive summary. Results: ICARâRSâ2021 covers 22 topics regarding the medical management of RS, which are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Additionally, 4 topics regarding the surgical management of RS are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Finally, a comprehensive evidenceâbased management algorithm is provided. Conclusion: This ICARâRSâ2021 executive summary provides a compilation of the evidenceâbased recommendations for medical and surgical treatment of the most common forms of RS
Separation of track- and shower-like energy deposits in ProtoDUNE-SP using a convolutional neural network
Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagnetic cascades. Results from testing the algorithm on data from ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype of the DUNE far detector, are presented. The network identifies track- and shower-like particles, as well as Michel electrons, with high efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is consistent between data and simulation
