Lipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors composed of mature adipocytes. They are classified according to their histological pattern and their etiology remains unclear. Objectives: To present two cases and review the literature. A search was conducted in the Medline / PubMed and Scielo data bases of the last 10 years (2004-2014) with the keywords “ intraoral lipoma OR oral cavity lipoma”. 46 articles with 95 cases (56 women and 39 men) were reviewed. The average age was found to be 52.28 years (52.28 ± 18.55); and most of them occurred between the 4th and 6th decade of life. Lipomas occur mostly in the buccal mucosa (n = 36, 37.9%), followed by the tongue (n = 23, 24.2%) and other locations (n = 36, 37.9%). The most common histologic pattern was simple lipomas (n = 40, 42%), followed by fibrolipomas (n = 18, 18.9%) and other types (n = 37, 39.1%). The average tumor size was 19.77 ± 16.26mm. Lipomas are a relatively rare finding in the oral cavity. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice and recurrence is not expected

Tularemia is a zoonosis caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis that can cause different clinical pictures and could simulate other diseases. A 54-year-old man consulted for febrile symptoms without a clear source of origin in which an image compatible with a pulmonary mass was found. The serology was positive for tularemia, so antibiotic therapy was started, but the pulmonary mass was further studied. After antibiotic treatment, the radiological image resolved. Pulmonary tularemia is a disease capable of simulating other respiratory entities, including malignant processes.

The organizational behavior and the design of a business project

I have tried to explain the patterns that any person who wants to start a project needs to take into account. With these patterns I have wanted to reference the knowledge and the necessary processes which have nothing to do with financial topics, accounting, etc. Starting with the definition of organizational behavior; I will try to explain it step by step in a simple way so that any person, even without my education, could at least have the basic understanding that is necessary to run a company successfully. And I said at least because this knowledge does not have to be applied by the owner of the business specifically, because there are a lot of consulting experts that could deal with such issues. Taking that definition of organizational behavior as a basis, I will explain the role that employees play in the organization, beyond being just workers. This includes how the work needs to be assigned to them, when to delegate or how to motivate employees. Also, regarding employees, I will address the necessary mechanisms so the activity in the company flows without setbacks. Later on, the different parts in which an organization is divided will be explained, giving more importance to those that I believe that are essential when starting a company, such as the central core of operations. The methods to design the work positions, the design of the superstructure, the design of the lateral links, and the system of decision making, that are all part of the design parameters will also be addressed. To conclude with the theory, the simple structural configuration will be explained due to my belief that this is what every starting company will be able to easily apply, explaining its application and its possible developments in the future. I would like to finish this project with an application of the acquired knowledge during my degree, applying them to my personal experience. I will try to explain how thanks to the knowledge that I have acquired throughout my time at the university, I have been able to notice its actual application in the business world through my own experience at McDonald’s.Grado en Administración y Dirección de Empresa

Evaluation of Onboard Stability Assessment Techniques Under Real Operational Conditions

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract] Stability-related accidents and crew lack of training are among the main causes of fatalities in the fishing fleet. Onboard stability guidance systems have been proposed by many authors as a possible solution. These guidance systems have been evolving from colour-coded posters to computer-based systems. However, their real-time operation without crew interaction is not solved yet. This work presents the validation of a methodology proposed by the authors in previous works for estimating the natural roll frequency of the vessel in real-time and thus the metacentric height. The performance of this method, based on the analysis of the roll motion, is tested during a fishing campaign of a mid-sized trawler, showing very promising results. The authors would like to thank Puertos del Estado for providing the wave and wind data used in this work (Puertos del Estado, Ministerio de Fomento, Gobierno de España, www.puertos.es). Describing posterior distributions of variance components: Problems and the use of null distributions to aid interpretation

    No full text
Abstract Assessing the biological relevance of variance components estimated using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)‐based mixed‐effects models is not straightforward. Variance estimates are constrained to be greater than zero and their posterior distributions are often asymmetric. Different measures of central tendency for these distributions can therefore vary widely, and credible intervals cannot overlap zero, making it difficult to assess the size and statistical support for among‐group variance. Statistical support is often assessed through visual inspection of the whole posterior distribution and so relies on subjective decisions for interpretation. We use simulations to demonstrate the difficulties of summarizing the posterior distributions of variance estimates from MCMC‐based models. We then describe different methods for generating the expected null distribution (i.e. a distribution of effect sizes that would be obtained if there was no among‐group variance) that can be used to aid in the interpretation of variance estimates. Through comparing commonly used summary statistics of posterior distributions of variance components, we show that the posterior median is predominantly the least biased. We further show how null distributions can be used to derive a p‐value that provides complementary information to the commonly presented measures of central tendency and uncertainty. Finally, we show how these p‐values facilitate the implementation of power analyses within an MCMC framework. The use of null distributions for variance components can aid study design and the interpretation of results from MCMC‐based models. We hope that this manuscript will make empiricists using mixed models think more carefully about their results, what descriptive statistics they present and what inference they can make
